ya...I agree it will be worth it. And hopefully the expansion comes out as late as early half 06....so I can justify buying the game again

True, but most expansion aren't equal to the original game, either, in length or content. You're using an incompatible comparison: "other" expansions are half-price because they're often half as long, or have half as much stuff, etc. If the expansions really are comprable to the original game, then it only makes sense they'd charge as much.
Of course this is all speculation until we actually see what they produce when the times comes.

If the content is as big as the first one, I will get it. Though, I'd probably wait a few months until the initial price drop...... I'd get it when it falls to 30-40 bucks.
Of course this isn't what the dev's want to hear, lol

Glad you said it.

Even if an MMO sells an expansion for $20 (most don't go that low, at least not when they first come out), add that to, say $10/mo (again, a low figure) in monthly fees. Now let's say it's 6-12 months between expansions. That brings the cost to $80-$140 every 6-12 months. Starts making that $50 not look so bad, doesn't it? Anyone who has a problem with ANet's pricing scheme is either a) bad at math or b) a total tightwad.

I'm hoping Anet keeps it around the $20 mark for expansions, or else they will be hard pressed to sell enough of them.... I'm pretty sure *I* won't be paying another $50 for an expansion.

hmmm... you say most.... then say only eq.....
guess I'm used to older games, never saw anyone trying to sell an expansion for more than $20. I never bought an expansion for eq, I got an eq with a slew of expansions included for less than $50, and it was store bought.... AO starts their expansions at $20, and now you can get them ALL for 9.95..... it seems it's a matter of older games vs newer games. Of course newer games cost more especially at the beginning of their life cycle. Guild Wars is the ONLY game I ever preordered, it's the only mmo/mmorpg/corpg/whatever that I ever paid the original price. I have more patience, and wait till the price drops $20 about a month or 2 after release. Seems I'm not as impatient as the 'average' gamer, comes with age and with playing these damnable computer games since Pong on the Atari, & Castle Wolfenstein on the commie 64....
In any case..... time will tell, and for those that HAVE to have the latest and greatest first, youwill pay more for that priviledge, and more power to ya....

I was able to purchase the original release GW for $39.99 the week it came out, so spending as much for the next chapter sounds good to me if the amount of content is the same or more.

Hmm.. Here's some math for you:
I played SWG with my husband for about 18 months. We had three characters. That's 3 game copies ($50 each) plus 3 expansions ($40 each) equals $270. 18 months times $15 per month times three accounts (SWG had one character per account, no multi-account fees.) equals $810.
SWG: $270 + $810 = $1080
GW costs us two game copies (we got em for $40 each). So far I've spent $80 dollars. If I continue for 18 months and they release a new expansion every 6 months and assuming I pay the full price of $50 each, that's another $200.
GW: $80 + $200 = $280
Add on minimal camping, griefing, grinding, etc.... OH YES, I'll definitely pay full price for GW expansions.

If they charge 50 bucks for an expansion, it will be worth it. Otherwise they could/would NOT do it. Anet knows what sells and what does not. The only short expansions we'll see that are the size of other game expansions will be FREE via streamed to us.

So once I clear my map, ascend, capture the wanted elite skills, I'll spend time practicing with my guild, doing gvg and some pvp, and enjoy that aspect of it. If/when the expansions drop to the $20 level, and no other game is bright and shiny enough at the time, I'll consider buying it. I am by no means your 'average' player, that's obvious. But to each their own eh?? How many people are wondering how in the world can I play this for over a month and just be getting to Sanctum?? I wonder why in the world they want to rush 2 players in 1 day through ascension. It depends on why people are playing the game, and what they want out of it. I am in no rush to 'beat the game', and I'm plenty able to hold my own now in pvp or gvg, and will only do better once I get some more skills unlocked.

unless you find GW in the bargain bin at 20 i dont think you will find the expansion either.
as for speed i am still behind you smelling the flowers

Well, all I know is that if they came out with an expansion next week I'd buy it at full price.

Here you pay fees to get content...
In the rest of the MMO world, you pay to keep your account alive...

I sure hope they add PvP content. I've got enough PvE content to keep my characters exploring for quite some time. I'd really like to see some growth in the PvP area for different rewards. PvP seems kind of pointless so far. I realize you can't make a character "better". That way lies madness. But there could be skillpoints granted, or unlocking skills. We really need more to fight over.
Burem
The expansion pack shouldn't require a 50$ fee unless they are adding as many features as are available in release. And redoing the graphics/sound as well as all the combat systems and everything else. Development fees are alot lower for an expansion even if it has as much 'content'.
WeiPing
I didn't spend $50 just on content, I spent it on gameplay. Unless the expansion adds quite a bit to the gameplay, which I'm guessing it won't, then the value of the core gameplay is lost. $30 for content sounds pretty reasonable, but for $50 I expect more than just content.
Eclair
If the expansion pack comes with 25 more missions, a map the size of the original, more skills, more armor sprites, new gameplay mechanics...etc
I'll buy the collector's edition of it XD (provided they give better bonus than "divine aura" next time)

really? i would in an instant . . .its simple yet deep , damn pretty, and almost scary fun! considering how on top of things Anets been, and the amount of game ive seen (im at Elona Reach) , i would'nt even flinch if the content was on par with what they have now i wouldnt mind another character spot though
Darkest Dawn
I wouldn't mind raising the level cap a few with each expansion as well....

I personally hope not to hear of expansions in a while. If they pump out expansions like... after 1-2 months after a game is out, the cost might be more than a real p2p mmorpg. There' still alot of stuff to explore in this current game... i dont know why everyone is worked up

I take their "same amount of content" literally. 25 new missions, at least 50 new explorable areas filled with quests plus some new quests in the old areas to hint at the new content. Double he number of skills, some of the skills should be for old profesions, some for new profesions. Double the amount of character customization (a new race would do that). Double the number of items. And so on.
It should still be less than US$50 as we have already paid for the game engine once.
It will take a year before the expansion is out. The official schedule is "first half of 2006" which means June at earliest. Just like 28 April was "first quarter 2005".

Will expansion packs offer new features and functionality or are expansions limited to fresh content and more options? I asked Mike O'Brien about this, and he explained that our philosophy is that new features will be free and new content will usually have a cost. So features will be rolled out in our free Game Updates and content will be offered in our upcoming chapters. Mike said that features are things that improve or expand functionality. Examples of features would be account storage, chat or trade improvements, or such features as Observer Mode. And as mentioned, features will be included in a Live Update between chapters because they are part of the engine, and we are constantly improving that. Chapters, on the other hand, will offer new content. This will include a new storyline, new regions, new skills, new possible strategies, new PvP options, and a whole bunch of other great things. Chapter 2 is going to be so exciting that we are not going to hold engine improvements in order to encourage you to buy Chapter 2. We will give you the new engine improvements for free, as they are developed, with confidence that you will buy Chapter 2 for the great new content that it will offer. |

$50.00 dollars? Seems fair since we are not paying a monthly fee. I give ArenaNet credit for trying something different. I am sure they are learning as well as we are. They have responded to problems in the game with patches and are promising more. Granted allot of players are not happy with what has come from them...could they do better? I for one am happy with the results so far. Also they have even responded in this forum. I tip my hat to them for that. There is only one game now that I would play instead. That would be Civ 4. there is no way to make everyone happy...just can't be done. I have learned to accept what we have now and be glad we have it. Now if ArenaNet would just make me a In-Game Mod it would be perfect. I would clean up allot of lag time by kicking out the rude, vulger, offensive players.
