GW bans accounts without warning.....

I guess the community should know about some banning situations going on. For those who don't know when you create a new character, GW has a censorship on most of the offensive names, so they cannot be chosen. So basically whatever name GW allows you to "create" means it's not offensive. But apparently ncsoft can turn around and claim even the "allowed" names at any time to be offensive. I had a friend that has been playing gw since early beta releases using the same name that they allowed and never complained about, get banned without warning for offensive name the other day. Now after much hard work of trying to get a hold of some type of GW admin, the response was that "the character was blocked, delete it and make a new one; No name changing allowed." What they did is not against the user agreement yet pretty much sums up how terrible this game can/will be. If they will be banning without warning for names THEY find offensive, that is basically any character name in this game. So the problem is; why continue playing if maybe tomorrow your character may just be added to the block list without warning? Hell, i wouldn't even be suprised if they just start banning people for using offensive language in game.

By the way a note of this situation will most likely will be sent to those new game rating sites posted on the guildwars.com. At least if they are going to rate a game 9/10 they should know about all the angles of how poor it can be.

More than likely, given the situation you just discribed, some users were offended by your friend's character name and GW felt it necessary to ban the account. I wish there was a name change allowed, but this does happen in alot of games out there.

The idea that you could list every possible offensive name is preposterous.

It's always the "friend", never "I got schooled for making a name that I knew was offensive, but hoped wouldn't get noticed because I put a space between every letter".

OK, I'll give the benefit of the doubt to you and "your friend". What, pray tell, was the name?

if you choose a name like "m0mmy fawker" you're asking to get yourself banned. it's a childish attempt at a laugh based on rudimentary childish humor. People that use names that can even be construed as offensive should expect that at one point they COULD be banned. Most of the community that doesn't have mommy and daddy paying for the game isn't going to be choosing these types of names.

Here was your official warning:

Gaile Grey Explains Offensive Name Policy

Basicly someone or many someones decided they were very offended by your friend's name. You'll have to ask Gaile how many reports must come in on a name before the action is taken.

I suggest being more cleaver. I love the French language for saying so beautifully and gently what sounds so harsh in English.

Well it may not seem fair that they at ArenaNet deleted a character for an offensive name, however, ArenaNet got their point across LOUD AND CLEAR. Personally I do not blame ArenaNet for this policy. I would do that too...in a heartbeat. There is no need for vulgur/offensive names. It is NOT funny nor clever. It is simply childish.

As for vulger language in the OPEN chat line. That too should be delt with very little room for excuses. I would propose a Three Strike rule. That would be more then fair. After the person met their "Three Strikes"....Yer out of there...!

you should be penalized for being a moron...if you're name gets banned it's because you specifically chose a name in an effort to get a rise out of people....you know this is true. You should be penalized for it.

lmao he is probably 13 years old and has no concept of what "fair" is. fair to him is whatever gets him his way anyting else is "bullshit"

it is simple rreally this is a fantasy game so use your mind (or a couple name generators) and think of a constructive name, not the crap i see every single day.

There are far too many deliberately offensive and tiresome players in this game .. more power to A-Net's elbow I say...

I'm offended by your inability to spell my handle! And that's actually a pic of me, now you've hurt my feelings!

[/retardation]

I actually do get a slight bit of amusement out of seeing the very imaginative 1337 vulgar character names these 12 year olds come up with. Just thinking about them eventually getting banned for it really makes my day.

License Agreement:
(d) Character Name. In order to use the service, you must create a character and choose a name for your character to identify your character to other Members (your "Character Name"). You may not select as your Character Name the name of another person, or a name which violates any third party’s trademark right, copyright, or other proprietary right, or which may mislead other players to believe you to be an employee of NC Interactive or its affiliated companies, or which NC Interactive deems at its sole discretion to be vulgar or otherwise offensive. NC Interactive reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to (1) delete or alter any Character Name or (2) terminate any license granted herein, for any reason whatsoever, including, without limitation, any suspected or actual infringement of any trademark or trade name right, copyright, or other proprietary right.

Well with that, nc can claim anything they want to be vulgar/offensive. My friend that got banned used the same name in another mmorpg (that would warn/ban for offensive names too) for over a year and never even got a warning. So how would he know or others know what may be offensive to nc, WITHOUT A WARNING? Everyone does have different meanings or different up bringings on words so just "offensive" is so broad.

It's kind of odd too that they are so against swearing in this game but yet in one of the cut-scenes I do remember the word "Damn" being used pretty intentsly. Some cultures may find that offensive. :P Or whenever the henchmen get interrrupted by a mesmer and they shout out scambeled words to cover up a swear, that could be considered offensive too....

An offensive name doesn't just have to have profanities in it. I can be perfectly offensive without swearing once, for instance. All I have to do is stop showering, start shouting, and occasionally add 'fool' to the end of my sentences, fool. See? Works like a charm.

Point being, as you haven't posted what your supposedly-innocent name was, nobody's going to take much notice of your warning.
