Charr Hunting in Pre-Sear
DarrenJasper
Everyone complains about hard missions like this... Why do them, then? There's no reason to stay in pre-searing past level 3.
Swampgirl Inez
I kept hearing stories about these Charr, but since I'd only been playing the game a few days, I knew nothing of them. I waited and did the Over the Wall mission near the end of my days in pre-sear and it was pretty easy. The guy was only a few feet inside the gate. Having never been to the Northlands and getting to the point where my party and I could kill pretty much everything already, we decided to do some exploring. We can take on anything right?
We turned a corner and ran into about 10 level 8 Charr. My opinion of GW went up about 5 notches.

You bet there is a reason. ONE, it keeps low levels from relying on high level players to protect them in the first missions. TWO, if you come to post with less than 1500 gold, you'll never be able to upgrade your armor or buy extra pouches. THREE, you had better salvage LOTS of resources in pre to help upgrade your armor and to sell the excess so you MAY be able to buy a better weapon than you started with. FOUR, Basic skills obtained in pre make having to buy skills or ask a thousand times where the quest for fried salami begins less annoying. FIVE, if you don't understand the importance of attribute points and decide your weapons profession in pre, you're never going to get a proper balance till you're in over your head in post.
I've watced too many level 3 and 4 players begging for gold and weapons in post because they didn't think before they crossed over. And what annoys me even more are those who realize they're in over their head and want to find their way back to pre.

Where can I find a vendor who sells bags. I really havnt looked around yet, but all the merchants I've talked to havnt had them.
Swampgirl Inez
In post-sear you can buy bags.

For those who fail to read... boo-hoo. No sympathy. For those who read and fail to understand... hahaha!
I remember the days when the ranger you had to rescue was about 30 feet inside the zone so you never saw anything in there! I'm glad they moved it to where it now is... that pack of Charr with 2 Shaman is tough for a 2 man team. For the first time in the game you have to start thinking about tactics.
Great quest!

My first character I took into post-searing at level 5, and every character after at about level 3 (that's how high I was after doing all the quests to get skills for both of my professions, and the very easy Devina quests). I've NEVER had a problem with post-searing. Ever. Pre-searing bores me to tears, so why would I dink around there for longer than I have to?

noobs! im outta pre-seering by lvl 2 or 3 at the most. What a total waste of time. Other than gathering your basic skills which you can buy later anyways, this place has no use. Leveling is a total waste early. No matter what you'll be level 20 by the time you ascend, so why bother leveling. And its not like any of that stuff is all that hard. The whole game is based on teamwork and understanding how the game works. My level 5's are often much more effective than any level 10's around because i have weapons passed down from other characters, and as long as you're not a warrior you dont have to take hits. And any caster can still do very solid damage anyways. What kind of gold are you going to make there anyways? 1 and 2 gold per kill. What a complete waste of time. You could spend a week there and not get the exp you'd get off of 1 hill giant in the riverside mission. Learn the ropes and dont spend more than 10 minutes in pre-seering and you'll be a happier person later on. To all of you who waste more time there than that,

With my second or third character, my boyfriend and I have taken down all the char behind the northern wall, and we have screenshots to prove it. In Beta weekends we had no luck, but then with use of an E/Me and a R/E we managed to do it, after about seventy deaths, three hours and dinner. We were level six when we went in there and he leveled up to level seven by the time we left.
In the beta weekends it was fun to test things on the char behind the wall and see what worked and what didn't. This three hour expedition helped us gain a wide variety of strategies for fighting monsters. We managed to tick off a few at a time, long range weapons rule, depending on which you use.
I love the challenge behind the wall, the quest is easy comparative to the hoardes of charr.
Yes, you CAN buy your skills later, but do you realize you LOSE skill points that way that can be used for skills that you can ONLY buy later on? It's more worth while in the long run to get all of your skills in Pre-searing, level as much as you can, and maybe get six or so dyes out of it, as pre-searing seems to drop dyes like crazy, and gather up some crafting materials you'll need for new armor later, and be prepared with about 750-1000 gold for your new level 30 armor. Rather than getting the cheap level 15 armor.
I've done the same, unless it is with a second character, my W/Mo blasted through getting skills, then a few supplies before going through the Academy at level three. I had the money and crafting materials in my vault already for the armor she needed, and as far as survival, I let my BF take me around for a while as a babysitter of sorts, he got gold and crafting stuff, I got experience and such. It worked out just fine. I've always tried to stick in pre-searing as long as I could to get what I knew I needed for that character, but now I go on since there is a vault in post-searing. But I would prefer to not spend all of my money on my new character and try and let it fend for itself abit.
Rushing through Pre-searing is good for some I suppose but if you want to unlock all the skills for your classes, or one of them, then earning your skills in pre-searing is better than buying them and wasting a skill point that could be used later. Not to mention, you buy a skill, the price goes up each time, it's smarter to buy what you want and will use rather than everything just because it is there, unless of course you are unlocking for PvP.

Unless they moved that guy your supposed to go and resuce from where he was when I was in pre-searing... that quest is easy. No doubt those four Charr that are near him are hard to kill for a two man team, as we found out the first time we went in there. My buddy decided that they needed to die for some reason, I was thinking... "hmm, I'll bet we can sneek around them.". And after we died, that's exactly what we did. Its easy to resuce that guy and get back without getting into any overly hard battles. If they really wanted to make that quest hard, they'd put that group of four Charr right between you and the guy you need to resuce - so that you'd have to face them in combat.

Noobs. Quaintly thrown around by those who think April 28th was ancient history. That word is used frequently here, and I think it's a word that needs to be removed from the forums. We're ALL noobs, even those of us who played the betas. So if you think that using the word noob to describe other forum members is proper and makes you feel superior, remember that date, April 28th. It was only a couple of weeks ago, and untill we've all been here about a year, noob is the norm noob.

No no, I understood that and that totally deserves a good congratulations. I basically said that for the benefit of those who believe the mission is too hard do to the four Charr sitting near the guy in need of rescueing. Just saying that you don't even have to face the Charr if you don't want to. I know you have to kill 2 or 3 Oaks on the way there, but they're only level 5 and can be taken without a partner even.
On the note of exploration, I joined up with a guy to get my character into that area. We got about half way to the quest when he either left or got a connection drop. Didn't matter to me, so I started seeing how far I could get by my little self. I was taking on groups of 3 Charr alone, it got close more than once. I by no means came close to eliminating them all and eventually gave up exploring in favor of getting the quest finished for that character. I'd love to witness a two man team taking out all the Charr in and around the Altar. Quite a few high levels in that small area, and might have been named ones - I can't really remember anymore. Not saying it can't be done, but it'd sure be something to see.

Believe me, we weren't the first to do it. I wish we were, but we weren't, and that's ok because its' more for our own satisfaction than anything else. >^o^<

OMG... I have 3 characters running in post searing, but I made a Monk/Warrior in pre-searing, did all the quests there are and collect all the armor there is in pre-searing, and I am about to stay in pre-searing with that character especially to hunt charrs.
There is so much fun on it and, believe me, they drop GREAT things to sell in pre-searing, cause not much people go hunt charr so they dont find, for exemple, a very good longbow 10-15 DMG, with a markmanship +1 bonus...
I really stay with my lvl 8 Monk/Warrior in pre-searing till I everyday killed all the charrs there are at the northlands till im lvl 14 or 15..
Earlier I dont move to next world...

Wow...way to go reviving a thread thats nearly 5 months old!
Hahaahahahaha.
And yes, charr hunting is fun...at least there's some sort of challenge for the people who like the scenery in pre-searing.

Charr hunting in Pre-Sear is great fun. And its not your standard "run-in-and-kill-them-all" approach either. You've gotta be smart to do it. Much fun, I think I'm gonna go back and make a Char just for pre sear alone.
Epinephrine
Been clearing the Charr a lot lately, they hit hard but are doable. Only thing that really irks me is the inability to salvage stuff with expert kits; I've sold off at least 10 runes at this point as they're still stuck in the robes/armour I found them in. Expert salvage kits would be great!

There are some that stays in Pre and kills the bosses at the shrine for xp
I have a elementalist with some ranger skills that has reached lvl 14 and 80%, took me about 60-70 hours, but i havent been entirely focused on being time efficient.
The Northlands isnt that hard. I could Solo it at lvl 8 (providing someone let me in). There are plenty of cover and terrain, that can be used for tactical advantage. Some charrs can be pulled to the gate, where the ress shrine monk can help.
I have heard that there are lvl 20:s in Pre-Seering, but I think they must have "lvl:ed" the enemies -by dying alot. Since at lvl 16 the lvl 10 bosses dont give any xp.
Saving the quest exp for lvl 15-16 is a good way of conserving effort

we were both at lvl 7, it was a lot of hit n run, sneak n dot and we "almost-died" a lot...we did for fun, not for xp.

Some unnecessary rant. Some like pre-searing. so what, let them enjoy it.

Ahhhh... Charr hunting, can anything be more fun?
I love it! I've taken each of my 4 characters (usually when around lvl 7) Charr hunting at least twice... And twice with 2 characters I went the whole hog in a 2 man team to kill all the Charrs over the wall. It's great fun and a very good place to serve as a training ground.
I remember the first time I saw Charrs up close and personal, as an E/R it was a bit too personal for my liking. A simple extraction quest, my team mate located Ben Wolfson and was leading him out. Being the curious cat that I am, I decided to have a look at these Charrs. C'mon, who wouldn't be curious after constantly hearing scores of people shouting 'LFG to go Charr hunting' in Ascalon City. Well, I saw the 4 near where Ben Wolfson was and approached without caution ('what was I thinking?'). 'My, they look frightening big and ugly' I thought, and that thought was quickly replaced by confusion and sheer panic as my health started dropping and 2 Axe Fiends charging towards me. From that point, all I can recall was frantically clicking my mouse and bashing at my keyboard, but somehow I just barely made it across the water to be relieved that they gave up the chase. We completed the quest and needless to say I was in no rush to go back again.
But I did go back again, but as a N/W. Teamed up with a R/? to do the Ben Wolfson quest. Completed the quest and had a quick chat about a spot of Charr hunting. My N/W was doing well in Pre-Searing, so why not? On the approach to the same 4 Charrs, 'payback' was on my mind, 'they scared me the first time, I'm gonna kill them this time' I thought. Kinda near the Charrs were 3 Grawls, not sure where they came from. 'No matter, they're not too close to the Charrs, so we'll kill them first hehehe'. The Ranger attacked and her pet charged out to meet them. Not sure exactly what happened, but the Charrs came out to attack the Grawls. We decided to retreat, let them dish it out and then finish what's left, but the pet wanted some Charr meat and stayed. Seeing that it was to our advantage to side with the Grawls, we started to attack the Charrs. Then Sod's Law, yup... the pet came running back to us, closely followed by... yup, you guessed it... 2 Axe Fiends. A quick skirmish, a couple of rez'es, and we were at the rez. shrine. The Ranger sounded chuffed with 'I got the Shaman!'. 'Cool, how many left?'. '3' was the answer. We charged in and quick as a flash, we were back at the rez. shrine again. 'How did we do, I dunno what happened?'. 'Got another' said the Ranger. We had a chat and agreed that we were not really ready for this and departed on our own merry way.
Seeing that my N/W didn't have much effect on the Charr, I wanted another try, and teamed up with a Me/? We faired much better and gave those at the Charr shrine a good beating, although I did loose count on the number of runs from the rez. shrine. After awhile we decided to call it quits. When I commented that I seemed to be having a tough time with Charrs (as I felt that the Me/? was carrying me), the reply was that Warrior as a second was not very effective. I saw that as a polite way of saying 'your build SUCK!'. Maybe a Warrior second was fine, but just not for me... Anyway, a lesson was learnt, and from it spawned my N/Me and W/N.
Since those 3 excursions, the sport of Charr hunting got better, especially with a regular team mate, better builds and refined tactics.
I always enjoy those which required a game of cat and mouse. Using hit and run tactics, we'll try to separate the pack. When they gave up the chase, usually one would hang around or lag behind... easy meat. It's exciting when trying to put down this loner and only to notice that behind it there's one or more Charrs heading towards you. Do you finish it off and hope you have time to recharge, or do you run? Fight or flight? Fight or flight? Arghhhhh! RUN AWAY!
The funniest time was taking out the bosses at the Charr shrine without wiping out most of the other Charrs. At the shrine, my regular team mate and I have this habit of taking out the 4 patrolling up front, the 2 on the right corner of the shrine and then head up the hill on the right (and taking out the 4 up there if they're close). This time, when the hill was cleared, we used bows to draw out a boss. Slowly pulling it out so it couldn't be healed and then hitting it with everything we had. It was a very long and slow process as the boss sometimes ran back and we had to draw it out again and also due to the patrol from the rear of the shrine, it was mainly a waiting game (sure, we could have charged in, but we wanted to try something different). It was amusing when we took down a boss and this patrol returned, one could imagine them seeing the dead body and thinking 'pfft! yeah, whatever!' before wandering off again. Every time it came back, there was another dead boss, LOL.
It was a great feeling to kill all the bosses with many Charrs still guarding the shrine, taking them out from right under their noses was almost like taking candy from a baby...
Tis a shame that I now only have one character left in Pre-Searing...
