Upgrades or runes for Shields?

I did a forum search and didn't get an answer. Can any runes or upgrade components be used on shields? I asked in game too and got mixed responses. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No you cannot. Same goes for the caster shield things. (Not sure what to call them. Idols I suppose.)

I believe they're called a Focus, so focuses or something
