Great post, I agree this needs a sticky though.
I am a little dissapointed that these pets seem to have all the same stats. Neverthless, I am glad to see this info and I think lots of others feel the same.

Traps/spirit path... Traps involve running into mobs, expertise and the added AR of ranger primaries is more sought after for trappers. This is certainly news to me, I heard that pets' specs (excluding the strider and black widow) were completely cosmetic and didn't vary with higher level beast mastery.

You are missing a creature from your pre-searing list, i saw some moss spiders i forget where in presearing when workingon my mnk toon

Ok so i was wrong u cant charm em i thought you could because they were green but ya, try and charm but when you do it says not an animal that brings up an interesting question then on how u can charm the uw spider but not the pre searing one.... pre searing ( cant because not animal) after searing uw spider sure will just call it an animal *wink*wink*

I have a question relating to pets, purely "cosmetic" question really. But since this claims to be the ultimate guide.. and since it looks like the stats are much of a muchness...
I saw a screenshot in the screenshot forum of a W/R with a pet pig (that you can get from pre-searing) and it looked BIG - esp compared to how puny it looked at the start..
My question is - do pets change size/appearance as they level up and/or reach new area's? Or do they stay the same size/shape/appearance as when you 1st got them?

pets grow in size as they gain levels
a level 20 pet is almost 3 times the size of a level 5 pet

Any chance of pictures of these? For me I've seen all but the lizards. Was thinking they might look pretty cool

Ninna & UsagiNoSenshi - thanx for that. I didn't realize pets got bigger as they lvl's. I know it's purely cosmetic, but still interesting to know & thanx for the screenshot UsagiNoSenshi.
Would also be interested in seeing screenshots of the different pets.
But interesting to see that basically every pet seems to be around the same damage / dps wise, with main difference being simply what type of attack they do, how they look and slight variations in dps/attack-speed/min-max damage... apart from the Black Widow that is...

lol think that was a joke!!! Sort of like saying a tomato worm is a plant.
I think that moss spiders were orginally charmable? But like the black bears got taken away in pre-sear. I hope to see another low level charmable spider some day.

Hi
I have the GW Guide and it shows a map of The Northlands across the wall in Pre- Searing Ascalon and on the map it shows Fern Lizards. The legend of the map list them as Fern Lizard(Pet 1), so i was wondering if they were tameable. The other legends of the other maps show Bears and Moss spiders as pets too. So if anyone can give me an answer that would be great because I would really like one, but right now i have a Level 8 wolf and i won't get rid of him unless the Fern lizards are tameable.

anyone see the interview thing on the guild wars site, it says each expansion will have new pets, thats freaking awesome, personally, i want a giant bull, that would be so damn cool
Elena
new pets will be awesome and keep up the diversity ^^

About that interview though...
It seems as if the interview suggests that the pets ARE indeed different from one another.
I'm curious WHO exactly did the tests and more importantly, HOW. I'm not questioning whether or not the tests were done with attention to accuracy but there's possibly something missing. For example, my personal experiences with pets seems to suggest, for example, that Stalkers do less damage than most other pets along with having less health, but do more damage with pet skills.
In any case though, the guide is very useful for the locations, listings, and whatnot and I must give my acknowledgement for good work.

Another example of this would be bows: Some shoot faster, some truer, and some at longer range. At least one has armor piercing, too. If you add elements like bow grips and strings, you have some pretty interesting complexity of stats for these items. The same applies to the many pet-related skills used in conjunction with each pet’s inherent strengths. As for elite pets – none will be coming in the foreseeable future. However, there will definitely be new pets in Chapter 2 and most likely in each subsequent chapter. |

You know, information I have found at another GW fansite suggest's that the title that a pet can gte... or it's "evolution" does indeed effect how good/bad a pet is. Unlike what is atated in this guide here.
It says that basically any pet which gets to the "Elder" evolution would be just as good as the Spider you get from the UW, as the spider does so much more because it's pre-evolved at the "Elder" level, which according to them is the best evolution possible.
Are they just imagining things? Or is there any possible truth to what they are saying? Anyone got any thoughts?
I'd link to it... but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to make links to other GW fansites forums in here... it's in the Rangers section of the GWOnline forums...

Quick question:
What armor level were these pets dealing damage against for the tests? Perhaps Prima used a different armor level for determining the damage of the pets?

So basically the spider is the strongest pet right?
Ninna
depends who you ask and what you mean by "strong"
I've seen people make arguments that the Warthog is better based soley on damage type (blunt)

theres another pet guide to in gwonline that tells about pets also the things that pets evolve into do actually effect the pet. like some get more life some more damage and less life, some less damage more life

(everyone's gonna flame me for this I bet)
doesn the warthog have a charge ability?
I've played constantly with my warthog and it dashes twice as fast as a Lynx towards a creature you engage.
Is this a quirk? Am I insane? Or is it actually possible that the Warthog really has this ability (like the spider has immunity v. bleeding)

It seems no one update or post anything after... so...
According to people of GWonline's research:
There are no difference amount the type of pets. The only thing that effect a pet is its evolution. There are playful, hearty, aggressive, dire, and elder.
Their stat changes are:
Playful: +30 hp -1 damage
Hearty: +60 hp -2 damage
Aggressive: -30 hp +1 damage
Dire: -60 HP +2 damage
Elder: +3 damage (no hp change)
The elder is no doubt, what most people prefered. The Underworld spider is not the best, it is just that the tested Black Widow happened to be an elder.
To train a pet into an elder, it is required that you change your playing style completely after the first evolution. If your first evolution is playful, then you must make your pet do the damage and killing the rest of its leveling until elder. If your first evolution is aggressive, then you must not allow the pet to do further damage and killing the rest of its leveling until elder. The actual format of how pet evolve is still quite up in the air currently, but that is around how it happen. You will not knowtice pet's evolution in the middle of battle, you will need to enter a town/outpost to refresh the evolution name.
To find out your pet's evolution, just type /namepet
Pet have 80 AL at lv20 and they run 20% faster that human characters.
Edit: change the armor screw up

the spider i captured is a hearty one, is it possible to change?

Hearty pets are used as tanks... if u don't want a tank get an Elder
i thought pets only got +80AL... ?

Pets get 80al at 20, not 100.

I dont know where the hell i get the idea 100... i guess that is what i get for staying up all night long =(
and no, once your pet reach level 20, you are done there.

It's true that a pet will have an innate armor level of 80 at level 20; however, with Otyugh's Cry that can be pumped up to 100 unconditional (not elemental or physical specifically) armor. Add to that the 11-15 absorbtion that a decently supported Call of Protection will give and a pet is a monstrous tank.
I know it is documented everywhere that the attack bonus for the Dire pet is +2 and the attack bonus for the Elder pet is +3. However, I've done my own testing of the relative damage between an Elder and Dire since the update making their damage visible. I took a level 15 Dire and a level 15 Elder out into Old Ascalon and let them beat up on 5 different varieties of enemies while only having 1 point in Beastmastery (I had a rune and didn't feel like making new armor just for the test). I carefully documented the damage range reached on each foe killed until each of the pets had killed 24 of each type of enemy I was dealing with. By that point, definite damage ranges had emerged, and the Dire undoubtedly has higher attack than the Elder by approximately 1.142%. If indeed the damage range on a "typical" level 20 pet is 15-28 as has also been documented everywhere, then that 1.142% comes out to approximately +3 attack over the Elder.
I didn't come up with exact damage values for the Dire or the Elder because my purpose was only to test the preconcieved notion that the Elder is better on all counts than the Dire pet. Nothing else ArenaNet has done has created one uber anything, and as such I didn't believe pets would be subject to such imbalance. My test fulfilled its purpose and illustrated that while the Dire pet's health may be significantly reduced in comparison to the Elder, it has an attack boost to counteract that.
