Why did you buy Guild Wars?

I played FFXI for about 6 or 7 months last year. I quit because of many reasons (including no money, 8 hours waiting for a party & Japanese refused to party with Americans was no fun, gil-sellers online ruining economy) -- more stress, less fun.

My bf's brother pre-ordered World of Warcraft. We tried to talk him out of it, after what FFXI had done to all of us - but he insisted. Boyfriend and I started missing online gaming (mostly, I missed TaruTaru /panic), so we were happy to be able to get on the WoW Final Beta, since it wasn't open to everyone. Bf thought it was boring lol. My sister and I thought it was alright - the kind of game you'd want to play sometimes, but wouldn't want to feel forced to play, or pay extra for (monthly fee).

Both of us had tried Guild Wars very long time ago during one of their open alpha (or was it beta?) testings. Some of my friends like to test out any and all online games there are, just to see if any of them are worth picking up. A lot of them played FFXI, some play WoW, and we've gone through a whole crapload of other betas that aren't worth mention. I wasn't happy with GW at first because I didn't understand the gameplay style (I tried it when I was still playing FFXI).. but after being away from online games for a long time, we figured we'd give it a shot again.

The main that pulled us in was -- no monthly fees.
But other good things to point out are: player skill over time, casual feeling game (map travel!), and tombs was lots of fun.

So we picked it up for the Feb BWE and loved it, and managed to convince 15 other people to love it, too. ^_-

I'm just curious as to why exactly you picked up Guild Wars.

1. It was advertised as an RPG-type game you can play with others OR solo
2. No monthly fee
3. It promised to not reward only those who can dedicate themselves to 60 hours a week playing a game and relegate people with real lives to being second class citizens
4. The artwork look spectacular
5. I wanted to see if I could stand the nimrod-level in an online game. Jury is still out..lol.

My g/f initially told me about the game.. She had heard about it from some of her friends. Since we live in different towns, we thought it would be something nice to do together when we are apart (at our different homes).

We started playing in the Mar BWE and have played ever since. Team speak is just as handy as the thousands of minutes we'd put into our cellphones besides.

Both of us deplore the idea of P2P. I catagorically refuse to pay to play a game I already bought.

Once we have our own place together.. hello home networking.. lol

NO monthly FEES. Main reason. Decent graphics and the ability to play with good friends in an online enviroment is the other reason. Also not a CLICK FEST like Diablo. When you are an Old Warrior Dood with arthritis that means a whole lot.

I don't believe laying down 50 dollars plus tax on a game that I can't even play unless I dish out even MORE money to play it every single month. GW looked like a good game I could play with my friends/family who like computer games, so I picked it up. I found it more than worthy, and convinced about 15 other people to buy is as well.

A.Net should be paying me for advertising! lol.

To play competitive, skill-based PVP like originally promised.

Unfortunately 90% of the competitive community is either still grinding for unlockables or have simply left.

I haven't seen anyone on my friend's list since WoW Battlegrounds came out.

Skill, not time played my ass.

A friend asked if i was going to get it. I personally had never heard of it because i had my attentions set on another game.
I said i would take a look at it.

I looked at all the trailers and interviews and thought i might actually buy it.

I wasn't really into games with spells and magic etc but it looked so neat and was advertised as being for solo and team play and had no fees.
I had been looking for a "mmorpg" to play for a while.

Very impressed.

I've always been interested in MMOGs, but never felt I could justify the monthly fee. So that's what piqued my interest in Guild Wars...I wouldn't feel like I'd wasted my monthly fee if I couldn't play a specific amount of hours per month.

I didn't get around to trying it during E3 for Everyone until the last 4 hours it was available. I've been hooked ever since. The game was fun and challenging, the graphics looked great, it ran well on my decidedly-not-cutting-edge computer, I grouped with complete strangers and actually enjoyed it, I liked that I could choose to do PvE, PvP, or a combination thereof (or maybe because I could choose to totally stay away from PvPers...no offense, just not my cup of tea), and more reasons I can't think of right now. And all that for a one-time fee with no recurring-monthly fee. I think we have a winner.

I purchased the pre-sell and played during the BWEs (when I remembered or had the time). I then purchased the Collector's Edition when GW went retail. I have no idea how much time I've spent playing since April 28th (well, April 27th for me), but it's been a lot...guess I'll try an /age next time I'm online, but I'm not sure if I really want to know. Let's just say I feel I've already gotten my money's worth and I don't have any ascended characters yet. I've only just now gotten past the Frost Gate.

Of course, the money I saved on the monthly fees seems to be going right back into the game, anyway, so I'm not sure I'm actually saving that much. Paid extra for the Collector's Set, planning on buying the Prima guide, I have no idea how I'm not going to purchase all the extra music from DirectSong, and the expansions, whenever they are released, are already as good as bought. God forbid they release Collector's Editions of the expansions... I'm sure my electricity bill has risen slightly because my computer is on longer and I run a Teamspeak server for our guild, which is online even when I'm not. So I've become a bit obsessive with the game. I've even got a cardboard cutout of the GW necromancer...I saved her from the local EBGames before she ended up in the trash. (On a side note, do they have cardboard cutouts of all the different professions/in-game characters? I really feel the need to collect them all. Sad, I know.)

I've been telling my friends about GW for over a year now and they're getting quite sick of it. Well, not sick of me talking about GW, sick of not being able to play. I could double the size of my guild overnight if Anet decides to release a Mac client (hint hint, Anet ).

Sorry about getting off-topic there. I really like the game a lot.

Ah, that's another reason. It wasn't a grindfest for me, unless I wanted to grind. Then again, I'm mainly a PvE'er...

Ive never played another MMORPG or anything like it. I was attracted to GW because i like games that have a history or lore in them. I decided to buy it because having read the descriptions on the website it sounded great and when i found out no monthly fee and that i could get it for £20 including postage and packaging i thought why not?

Everything I've read has talked about a reduction of grind, not elimination of grind. In that respect, GW has been truthful.

My friend introduced me to this title. The first ever MMORPG/CORPG with no monthly fee. That was a good enough reason for me to get it. I have never played any other MMORPG before. I browsed through forums to learn that it was Diablo 2 minus all the bad things. Superiority not based on levels or items. That was a big plus.

Then move on, and stop posting about how much you dislike the game on the forums.

I understand that you are allowed to have an opinion, and express it on this website..but there is a difference between posting your opinions and whining..

The constant topics and posts about the 'grind' are just becoming boring, and only cause arguments..

And to stay on topic..

I decided to buy the game the day before it's release.

I was persuaded by the lack of monthly fees, and the fact that all of my friends were leaving other games to buy Guild Wars. (To be honest, I can see why. )

I do not regret the decision in the slightest, and whilst I do admit this game has a few problems the developers are doing a great job of fixing them.

I used to play counter strike 1.6 alot, i was working in a toys shop that sold this game too. I had nothing to do at that moment and watched the back of this game. I thought it would be cool to play a game like this for free after buying the game.

(and i was a bit bored with cs)

Well when i had finally conquered Diablo 2 Lod and couldnt get any better unless i got all 45 life skillers instead of 42+ and so december before the game came out i started participating in Beta and finding out that gold acctually mattered and having to unlock skills and being able to remake with attributes was HUGE! and no monthly fee..Woot Woot.....i think my favorite thing about picking up the game was seeing in the Beta that skale fins dropped like mad in presearing and then sold to people for most in post cause they were alot harder to come by so first 3 days of game i went skale hunting and ended up when i went to post searing there was a new materials trader i had 900 scales i sold all of them to materials for 1800 gold for each set of 10 i ended up with 170000 gold first 3 days of of release 2 weeks later they nerfed that but that was my favorite thing so far about picking up the game

Well i had been playing another mmoprg called star wars galaxies and was leaveing it as the CU had killed it and had heard about GW so I thought I would check it out. I read somethings about it and thought it was worth trying and I'm very glad I did. I just hope it does'nt get ruined by pvpers like SWG did.

Played Diablo 2 (PvP mostly) and Everquest since they both got released. Just thought it was time to move on so picked GW over WoW just because of the no monthly fee. It was a big plus since I am still paying for 3 EverQuest accounts which the wife still plays daily. She 3 boxes those and I havent played any of them since I got GW.

My friend showed me the very first Alpha, so I played that, then at the start of this year I bought a computer specifically for it.

I'm not normally one for PC games, I'm a console girl all the way. But this has stolen me.

The low system requirements were also important for me, which I forgot to mention. The only thing that makes it possible to play games on my computer is the 3d card The rest just tries to hang on as best it can...

i first tried it in WPE, loved the PvP loved the xp for a day and PvP my heart out, preordered it and played several of the beta events, but lately this game has turned into a farm, get nerfed, farm get nerfed, omg i can't unlock any skills cause i have to get 20k xp 20xp at a time for 1 SP, i can' unlock any runes cause by the time i find a new spot Anet already nerfed it.

i liked the idea of skill based PvP, but Arena net is dumbing this game down soo much, no one really fights on the ladder (top guilds that is) because its stagnet. and most peopel just skip the pve part of the game because its easier to rush a char to accension to unlock skills than to xp for the SP. and if i *was* paying for this i would of canceled after the SoC update

A friend got me to play it during E3 and I was impressed at the streaming technology and how well it played across the board on dial-up, poor computers, etc -- and it wasn't even into beta testing stages yet! (*cough* I ended up taking a couple of days off work to play more that week.) I thought the lore behind it was interesting and I got hooked. (I'm more PvE than PvP) I kept checking back on guildwars.com to see the game progress. So many things make it the perfect game for me. I'm one of those 'casual gamers', and I like the fact that I can play by myself for an hour after I get off work without having to get a group -- or I can group if I have more time. Like others I'm opposed to the monthly fee for a game I've already 'purchased', so I wanted to support ArenaNet when it came out. I haven't been disappointed yet.

I can handle reading opinions which do not match my own, as I am not a six year old.

But when around 4 topics on the same subject are posted daily, and constant posts about it are made everywhere else..it does get a little annoying.

Remember that the game has not even been fully released for two months yet, and I am sure the developers are working on something to make both sides happy that does not involve UAS..so be patient.

I will not post again on this subject in this topic, as it is nothing to do with the OP, and is not exactly fair to anyone.

And to stay on topic (Again)

The low system requirements also caught my attention..no longer do you need NASA quality PCs to play online games.

With 512 of RAM, and a decent video card this game runes fine..(It's just a shame I won't have those until later this week. )
