What Video Card?

Ok my budget is $300...I'm basically looking for the best vid card I can get for that price. I saw a 6600 GT for sale at a local computer store for $279. Is this a good purchase? If not, let me know of some good video cards, I'am dedicated to buying from the local shop so I will let you know the prices of the ones you list! I live in Canada so newegg is not an option. Thanks in advance.

That's a great card, but that price is out of line. You can pick the same card up at Newegg.com for less than $200, probably including shipping. Your local retailer is trying to rip you off.

Read his post again.

To the OP: I have noticed that you Canadians get absolutely ripped off in the electronics department. My friend had the same problem. If you've looked around and the 6600GT is the best you can get for under 300 then go for it. The word on the streets is that the 6600GT is by far the best bang for your buck right now...

Is'nt that due to the GTs being taken out of the box, overclocked slightly and then thrown back into the box?

Aroo?

Can you explain some more?

I know everyone overclocks their GTs because they are a very good card to overclock, but what do you mean overclocked then thrown back in the box? It is my understanding that several companies sell "pre-overclocked" versions of graphics cards, but I do not believe there are any major retailers purposefully misleading people by selling them shadily overclocked 6600 GTs.

Okay nevermind, I was thinking of the GT OC that I see so much more often. But when you think about it, there is not so much big of a difference between the GT and the Ultra that they need to have there be a $100 or more difference between the two.

Yeah us canadians kinda get ripped off in the electronics department, we have one website www.ncix.com which probably has the best prices around. I kinda lost trust in internet computer sales companies ever since my brother got ripped off for $2000. He sent in the money and the computer never got sent, the company went bankrupt. I found this on ncix.com : CLICK HERE TO SEE. What do you think? If you wouldnt mind browsing the site for the best deal for me, I would appreciate it and probably end up buying the best suggestion. Thanks again, appreciate the help so far. Oh and once again, the price on the website isnt much different from the store after taxes and shipping costs are included. I will also give you a link to the stores card to compare the two. CLICK HERE TO SEE STORES PRODUCT

What kind of computer do you have speed wise, how much memory? What is your current video card? From your own suggestion of the video card, I presume you need AGP? I don't mind scanning a few places and giving you my thoughts. The one you suggested from them appears to be out of stock. Thats a bummer.

P.S That isn't a bad price for that card.

I have never bought a computer online.I am planning on putting one together this summer and I will be ordering for the first time. What is the best thing to do is buy from an online company that you know to have a good rep.Know someone who has bought from that company.Look at reviews on that company by 3rd parties(gaming mags, computer mags,ect...)Keep on top of new tech being released. You just may get a great deal on something that you can wait to get in a few months rather than getting it right now.Check on warranties.Know what you want before hand but be flexible enough to alter your decision if need be.I have friends that order online on a regular basis and they have tried many differant companies over the years. The company that gets their vote,is NewEgg.But they will use another good company if they can get a better deal.Good luck

i gather parts that will last until i need to redo the whole thing which means a sort of rolling upgrade

new motherboard and cpu with swap of everything left than upgrade those parts (vc for example) as last years best comes way down in price or a budget version of todays best comes along (6600GT instead of 6800 ultra) for example

Ok first off, I cannot buy from newegg.com. I live in Canada, my brother has bought parts from ncix.com and they have been good. My current system specs are as follows:

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (1.46 GHz)
1.00 GB Generic RAM
ATI 9200 SE (Reason why I'm upgrading )
Asus A7V8X-X Motherboard
Integrated Soundblaster Live
Western Digital HD 40GB (Dont know specs, lost packaging, I know there is something extra on it I paid for...)

Please let me know of a good product off either www.cbit.ca or www.ncix.com .. THANKS!

Why don't you try www.zipzoomfly.com? They seem to ship to canada, and their prices are better than what I'm seeing. Loviatar, the only complaint I have about newegg is that they censor people's complaints about a product. But if you know what your getting already and trust the manufacturer, then they are number one on my list also.

Ok If its a choice between those two stores and a video card i'd have to go with this card you originally suggested, but they are out of stock:

Code:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=13575&vpn=128-A8-N350-TX&manufacture=eVGA
I hopped onto eBay just to see whats available. All of these items are coming from Canada. And they have a nice rating. I am not endorsing anyone here but a few of these cards have a pretty nice price for what they offer.

Good luck in getting your new card!!

The 6600GT is easily the best bang for your buck. I recently got one myself, and everything runs so much better. I like having all the options cranked right up, and this card allows me to do this. You will enjoy this card.

Sorry, didn't see you were from Canadia (it's a |D1E| joke, our web designer is Canadian). Anyway, I'm glad you went with the 6600GT, you won't be disappointed. I plan on picking one up as soon as I have the money. They really do offer the best performance to cost ratio by far. Let us know how it turns out. BTW, isn't Candian money worth more than U.S. $? You guys do get ripped off.

The 6600GT is an excellent buy for your money, and anywhere in the range of $269.99-$310 is a good price depending on the make of the video card. I'm from Canada myself, so the price is a fair one for what you're getting. Enjoy the video card, it wont disappoint.

You don't have to worry about scoring low most of the time. They aren't even very good indicators of system performance, since they're purely synthetic benchmarks.

synthetic yes but it will give you a consistant benchmark to work with to see if you improved or lost it

it also allows for pc to pc comparisons on a level field

also every gaming magazine and site uses them as well in testing

They use them. So? A lot of the P4 EE processors perform better than AMD64s (High end models) on synthetic benchmarks. They use them, but they aren't the key determining factor in overall system performance. P4s beating AMD64s in gaming and then losing massively in real-time application (While playing the game) doesn't inspire that much confidence. The world could use it for all I care, but that doesn't make it the best, it's simply "pretty good".

a recent issue of MAXIMUM PC put the top intel extreme edition against the top AMD cpu

it included a series of real life apps as well as gaming and synthetic benchmarks

AMD was the hands down winner

it may be slower in clocks but AMD is more efficient than intel per clock

they were very happy to finally be able to declare a clear winner instead of this is better for this but that is faster for this

It depends on the benchmarks and how they used them. I know even the slightest differences between the processors, I don't need to read those magazines.

I also scored a 730, and I think they are pretty accurate because my graphics card does blow, and some of my other components are not "top of the line". I'am also waiting for my 6600GT so I will do a comparison along with you Smiggles.

I've been reading a lot of SSE4's posts, he does appear to have pretty good knowledge of Intel chips and the differences from AMD chips.

That being said, I see him post a lot about how much he feels the Intel chips out perform the AMDs in one way or another, or that you just prefer the Intels over the AMDs.

In very simple terms, nothing beats and Intel for raw number crunching power, but for gaming and 'all around great performance for the buck' nothing beats an AMD.

I'd agree that advising Intel in a forum of people using graphic intensive programs or CAD or Rendering/ what have you is great. But touting Intel for gaming, and 'all around' performance for the end user is ludicrous.

Anyone see Tyan's new dualie 940 pin board with SLI. Wow. how yummy. Just let me know which one of you want to donate it to me. LOL

Ouch, the denial of knowledge from a reputable source, puts you in sore eyes my friend. It does matter how the benchmarks are done, but if you say you know the slightest differences how is that if you don't read? Get it off of the biased sights of Intel/AMD?
