Oh no, now rare items are actually rare! What will we ever do?!

Let's hope the update on Wednesday will introduce some way to prevent having to look for a decent place to farm in order to unlock skills/upgrades, as promised. Wind, rare items force a player to spend more hours into a game doing repetitive work in order to obtain them. That's fine in games like WoW or EQ, GW advertised to be different, so it's not unreasonable to expect them to actually deliver that promise. The 'ofcourse you have to grind for rare items' mindset belongs to people who want to 'win' the game by spending more hours in it than someone else instead of actuall being more skilled.

I have had MORE blue/gold salvages drop now after the patch than it used to before. I think the 'reduced' drops are just physcological paranoia of some people who are striving to find something to complain about. I do wish it were easier to unlock all the runes in the game - like maybe something like the rune trader except that it charges double perhaps? It's a pain in the butt to kill stuff endlessly just to get that one little rune you need to complete your PvP build. :O

The rare items are not that much better than blue items.

From what I've seen, farming in one place over and over again (and solo at that) will make items drop less and less to the point where they won't drop at all. But lo and behold, I was playing with a guildmate today and we didn't have farming in mind. We wanted to go see Greywind for some skills to purchase, but BAM! I got a rare ettin's pauldron and so did he one right after the other. I got a superior rune (yes, I'm the reason the Rune Trader isn't selling that damn thing for 100k now), and he got superior air. Irony is that I'm the aeromancer and he's the warrior. And so, we decided to grab another guildmate and go farming for runes. Result? Nothing.
Conclusion: The programmers at Anet managed to program our computers to be psychic. They read our minds and apply reverse psychology to them. Our computers will then process the items we don't want when we're hunting for them and then give us the items we do want when we're not hunting for them. Anet's too advanced for us. D:

Considering a blue item can have the same damage range and bonuses a purple and gold one can what's the purpose of there being "rare" class items anyway?
They should make "gold" items UNIQUE not just "the same old weapons with a gold colored name". Give them NAMES not just the generic pre/post-fixs all the other items use. And make them stronger and have unique effects and bonuses and make them UNsalvagable.
Keep the blue and purple items as the "build your own" weapons. Make "gold" items actually mean something.

Heard gold/purple items have lower requirements sometimes.
Such as max damage gold bows can have req 8-10 instead of 12-13.

Sereng Amaranth
yes, the gold status lowers requirements

Same goes for upgrades - blues always have the lowest or the next to lowest modifiers, while golds always have the highest percentages on all parts.
As far as base properties, though, being rare has no effect at all on what can and cannot spawn. You can get a max rare bow with an 8 req, and the same max bow with a 13 req.

And a lot of the (practically free) collector's items are much better than the items people find.
Edit:
& yes - gold & purple items have lower requirements. Good for when you want your lower-level characters to have a cool item, or when you don't feel like investing all your points and a rune so you can have the 13 attribute requirement.
plus gold and purple are for cosmetic, too. i'd actually be happy if i found a really good white or blue staff and added upgrades to it, as long as it did what i wanted. but if i had a purple or gold one that was exactly the same, it's considered "rarer" and more "special", and i'd want to show it off.

Like others have said, I've had more drops now of all kinds than before. But I never go farming, I just don't see the point. I find it takes all the fun out of things to do things like that.

I suppose the exception to this is collector items, before someone says they've seen a perfect blue item.
Sir Skullcrasher
quick question. Does this mean that the drop rate for rare weapons and items (both purple and gold) are now hard to find?

Hah, I was soloing giants today and got a gold salvage, Super vigor.
Yea, thats right.
Yea, thats right.
