Not having used this before I equipped it last night and had a play around with it. I know a lot of people like this skill, but what is the best way to use it? Obviously having it on all the time is a real Energy drain andi t doesn't recharge very fast at all.

Personally I love using it as a protection monk as I essentially get a 2-energy Orison with every cast. I don't like using it with Healing prayers as I don't like overhealing or waiting until someone gets really hurt to heal them. Coupled with some energy management abilities I find the capability to heal and protect others at the same time is worth the energy drain (which really isn't that bad - you only lose one energy every 3 seconds with it).

I used to like this skill but as time went on and I got better healing and protection spells I decided it was too much of a drain for the effect it had, concerning I was the one it had the best benifit on healing.

It's fine if you are spamming low cost heals or protections (i.e. 5 energy) and you have the DF points to make use of it. I generally drop it when I get to about half energy and bring it back up when I'm full. This can be a real help in countering one of your party being focus fired upon at the beginning of a fight.

But using Boon to drop big heals doesn't make much sense other than in trying to impress your party. They always end up less impressed when you are out of energy and they are dead =)

But, that being said, namely that there is a good use for Boon, I hardly ever bring it since there are skills that are more valuable without the regen hit. Maybe if you have some scheme worked out around Blessed Signet it could be more useful.
