I've been trying the Beastmaster approach to, using Ranger for Beastmastery and Expertise and Monk for Smiting. Why Smiting? Strength of Honor and Judge's Insight for Blankie of course.
I'm not nearly as far along as most of the people here (clawing my way to Beacon's Perch currently), but so far I'm happy with it, other than pet interface issues that I'm sure have been beaten to death several times already...
..with the exception of one unique to this build. I've found it's very difficult to cast Judge's Insight on Blankie in the heat of combat. I wish there was a way to cast non pet-specific buffs on your pet without having to target them directly. It's annoying enough where, for now, I don't use it. (10 Energy is expensive anyway.. I need to hurry up and get Druid armor. )

Beastmastery anonomous

I wonder if the most effective Beast Master isn't a ranger primary, but a class that uses other skills mostly, and has Ranger only for BM. The R/Mo, Mo/R idea for example. Or N to debuff the targets of your pet. Etc.
Any ideas?

Ranger Secondary - Pros - more spells, a different primary attribute.
Cons - No expertise
Ranger Primary - Pros - Expertise
Cons - Bad weapon for beastmasters (none), less mana.

Good god, man! Get yourself some Expertise! it is the veritable lifeblood of a Ranger. Troll Unguent alone is not worth you dumping 10 points into Wilderness Survival for. Switch that with your Expertise, and get a major rune on it. Unless you're using a few other things under Wilderness Survival, don't cling to Troll unguent, and just rely on the healer henchman (or a monk. I know, I said rely on Alesia, but Troll Unguent, ugh....Only time I've ever really used it is for running between towns or crossing poison). I know pet skills are cheap, but reducing them that much makes them pretty much infinitely spammable. If you're concerned about your own health, Expertise lets you grab Whirling Defense. If you really wanted to back your pet up in combat, R/W I think is the way to go. Oh, and the ironic thing about Beastmastery is its 'wow' skill doesn't affect your pet at all: It's Tiger's Fury. |
you are doing yourself short. get expertise 9, 13 or 14.
really. try it and see if you like it. i think you will.

I don't see why people aren't doing some more effective combining here. think outside the box. In a few days your all going to be in for a very big surpise.

This is especially true if you're going to look down your nose at us before you've even proven your idea. :P But who knows, maybe I'm going to eat crow over my doubts. (Can I cook it first?) I'd be happy to be wrong, I love pet classes in every game. But talk is cheap, as they say. Let's see your results, once you have them.

The build is taking a while to prepare and we don't want to give it away . Once we've had our fun with it we'll be happy to share.

I'm thinking of pure ranger Beast Master Build with one or two at most arrow skills.
1st off, it's been patched that pets are infused
Will expertise benefit the beast skills or just pump Beast Mastery & Marksmanship?
Thinking the build down the road will be:
1. Charm Animal (Required to have a pet)
2. Comfort Animal – Healing Pet / Resurrect Pet
3. Predator’s Pounce – Attack + Healing
4. Disrupting Lunge – Attack + Cancel Skill and disable it for 20 sec
5. Maiming Strike – Damage + Cripple
6. Scavenger Strike – Damage + AOE if they have condition
7. Poison Arrow – Target Poisoned
8. Troll Unguent
Since starting out have to take what ever beast master & marksmen skill I can get my hands on till I get further out in the game. I really like what NastyNYC has set up.
