Massive damage would be a elementalist, in their face can be either interruptting as in mesmer, or in their face as in a warrior chasing them down constantly. The topic was need a build, but you seem to be asking for a profession, so i'll just give you some professions.

Me/W (Does good damage with illusionary weaponry, can combine with hexes)
E/Me (Nice damage with air skills, combining the air's knockdown and blinding effects with mesmer hexes can mean major sabotage to warriors and casters)

As far as I know, it is impossible to both do huge amounts of damage and be in their face, The elementalist is the damager, the warrior the in-the-face guy.

Lol. Well, you couldn't find a good secondary calss for a ranger...because a ranger is good enough by it's self if you know how to use it. I chose a /Mo and I only use rebirth. I might later get some protection skills for when I am running...but for the most part my skill bar is always full of R/ skills. If you are to build an effective all around ranger, you wont have too many skill points left. I dump my remining three points into healing or protection...just cause I have nothing else to do with them.

To your question on a fun build...a n/me is a really sweet char. I love mine. Use skills like conjour (sp) phantasm, life xfer, empathy, backfire, life syphon and well of blood/power are good skills to use. Helth degen of like 15 while you get a regen of 10 isnt bad. =p plus, empathy or cry of frustration and backfire are good combos to use too to help mobs kill theirself. =p

As far as I know, it is impossible to both do huge amounts of damage and be in their face, The elementalist is the damager, the warrior the in-the-face guy. You can make a War/Mo and use standard Adrenal skills using your weapon of choice (If you just want to do massive DPS, this is probably Axe) plus Frenzy coupled with Smiting Prayers like Strength of Honor, Judge's Insight, Balthazar's Aura (You're gonna need Gladiator armor to even be able to afford that one though, 25 energy is pricy). You could even throw in a Holy Strike for a quick 5 energy burst of 40 holy damage, but its not the greatest of skills.

War/Ele with Conjure and Frenzy is another possibility, and somewhat less energy intensive, but not as damaging as the above. Can possibly go the Hammer and earth knockdown route here, but the way skills are distributed makes this kinda gimpy in PvE until you pick up everything.

War/Necro would also let you do some fairly significant damage (mostly through supplementing warrior offense with hexes and maybe some of the drains like Insidious Parasite).

Those are the 3 to choose from, IMO.
