i decided, out of boredom, to take a pve char (just one), and make it pvp worthy. that way, when on one fine evening someone asks me to play this specific build i can be like YESIR and wow him with my pve-ness.

day 1: more boring than not doing anything

Congratulations, you've cut through the bullshit =) ( a task that many PvE players can't grasp )

Why people would want to farm for an item ( be it a sword, staff or whatever ) that is inferior to a collector equivilent is beyond my understanding.

Maybe if we played a true MMORPG, where you're shaped by equipment -- I could see the point...

In the case of armor -- it's pure cosmestics ( and yes -- I do have 15k Glad Armor :P )

The fact that the numbers on items don't have any significant bearing in PvE or PvP is really one of the great benefits of Guild Wars

I'm gonna assume that you play PvP..?? If not it's probably more up your alley

The fact is..........People are vain.

You don't see any really ugly characters available to you in this game. Do you really want to make a fat balding bucktooth warrior with hair on his back? Or, maybe a female version with a bad boob job.

At least I know in PvE (can't speak for PvP), most people want to look good and show off to their friends. If this means in the next update I will be able to purchase a Yak at Yaks Bend to ride on missions, then I'm going to want to look good doing it! I would probably drop a 100k on a bad ass leather saddle and a gold chrome grill to cover my Yaks teeth because I want to ride in style.

Buying useless stuff gives people something to do in PvE once you've completed the game several times. Plus this doesn't unbalance the game play in PvP by just making the items look better.

I for one do not want this game to turn in to Diablo 2.

It's really very very simple: the collector weapons AREN'T the best you can get. Shields? The collector shields all require tactics, one has the bonuses while hexed, the other while in stance. If I want one that requires 8 tactics and has +45 health and -2 received while enchanted, you'll never get that from a collector and they're one of the rarest items in the game. Likewise with the staffs: they all have 20/20. What if I want one with a different inherent bonus? The same is true for every last weapon you can get from collectors. Yes they are max damage, yes the bonus stats they have are perfect, but there's other bonus stats more desirable. Quick recovery from dazed is very nice, try finding me a collector staff with THAT on it.

As for the more expensive armor, all online RPGs need gold sinks.
