A buddy and I just completed hero's challenge last night. Maybe it was because we used henchmen, but it was impossible to pull groups of less than eight, not including the azure shadows that randomly pop up.
I think we got a bit lucky because we pulled a group of eight off, died when four to five shadows popped up, rezzed in between the first group and another group of eight, and squeaked by between them and killed the boss to complete the quest.
Anyone else think hero's challenge was difficult?

Nope. I managed to do it with just my self and henchmen. Was easyer that the 1st 15 point attribute quest. If you ask me.

Ninna
maps can respawn differently every time you enter them
the creatures on the map are not always in the same locations
(with the exception of "nameds")
maybe your path was creature congested when you did it

I think I accidentally hostiled the entire stone summit group (15+) and still killed them all with henchies XD. Well of Power FTW!

I did it with henchies, and then came back again to help a guildmate. For the guildmate, we came down from the north rather than wander through the frozen forest, much quicker and easier that way.
