Another graphics card problem sorry, I’ve tried searching for help over the net but can only find symptoms similar to my problem.

I recently bought a Radeon 9550 128mb card for my pc to get it capable of playing guild wars a bit, but after installing the card and drivers my computer wouldn’t boot past the windows xp accounts logon screen whenever I clicked on my account It'd crash, the screen would go black but the harddrive would continue working and I’d have to turn it off at the plug.

But after a few attempted logins it randomly worked and logged me in and worked just fine. I restarted again to check the problem and it logged me in a gain but it crashed after a few minutes and the original problem continued.

I've removed the card and i'm currently using the onboard graphics system and my computer works fine.

If anyone could help me work out the problem i'd very much appreciate it as i'm looking forward to playing Guild Wars.

I'm not very good with computers though so it may be a simple problem.

My system specs (it's a crappy big store type) are:
windows xp home edition - service pack 1
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
512 MB RAM
Motherboard: AM39L (First International Computers inc)

The card i tried to install was an: ATI Radeon 9550 128MB DDR AGP.

Any help would be really appreciated as I only picked up broadband recently and would like to try an online game.

Sorry to add yet another graphics card issue and thanks in advance.

There are some *almost* imprescindible steps when you change from integrated graphics to AGP card:

1. DISABLE integrated graphics in the BIOS
2. Try to clean the IG drivers
3. If you haven't, you must install motherboard chipset drivers PRIOR to install the new graphic card drivers
4. reboot and install the drivers of your new RADEON.

Good Luck!

Boot into safe mode and then, as momo says, delete all references to IG drivers. Check your event log. You might also want to check you have the latest BIOS for your mobo.

I've tried removing the old drivers thoroughly and reinstalling the card and and now i'm even more confused .

It worked a lot better and got me past the logon screen and onto my desktop but after a few minutes crashed and the screen went black. I tried to log back on but it crashed at the logon screen.

But another try and its worked properly and hasn't crashed! It's succesfully restarted and worked for a an hour or so now, but im now constantly in fear of it crashing .

Anyway it seems to sortof work now and since the postman finally delivered Guild Wars to me i can actually play ....... apart from im in work in 30 minutes.

Thanks to you both for your help! I'm hoping god will finaly give my pc a break.

And once again thankyou.
