I am planning on buying the game for a friend from another country. Anyone know if he will be able to use the downloadable client with the new cd-key and be able to play? I am hoping so, so then I don't have to send the copy by mail and wait for it to arrive there.
Thanks
Verkivious.
Sorry if already asked but...

if you send him the retail key from the box you purchase the game will play
all it knows is that it received a valid key
enjoy

it simply says that at 11:59 pm on the 28th you will need to insert the retail key to continue playing

That's what I was wondering...will we be able to just use the new key, or have to uninstall the client and install the new CD version...or load the new CD on top of the existing client?
Loviatar
there was no mention of any uninstall or reinstall of the game just the retail key
i am guessing no for the simple reason that whenever they stamped the cd it would not have all the latest data you have already gotten if you are playing
however i expect it to contain every basic thing already downloaded so first time players on dial up dont have to download it
also all the main maps and items we havent seen yet should be there to spare us downloading them

I guess we'll find out when we go to start up the full game. As was said in a movie between characters played by Jackie Gleason & Steve McQueen..."...Until that time, Eustas;....until that time."

I can confirm that this works. I sent an email to Gaile Gray before I pre ordered and she said that I just had to email the keys.
The Beta Event, came, I sent the keys by email to my friends and we played. We are actually still playing with these keys. None of them had the Disks, they just downloaded the Client.
So, since Gaile confirmed this in a personal email to me and I have tried it - Yes I can guarantee it works.
The only thing that changes with retail, is the new key. So I believe it will work.
Check out FAQ or send an email to Gaile Gray at www.guildwars.com if you still are unsure.

the clients are identical. the client itself is tiny, (90kb or so?). all the other stuff on the cd are resources that you automatically download if you don't have them. so you will never need the cd, having it only helps if you haven't downloaded most of the resources, ie. you are a new player on dialup.
NCsoft will most likely offer the retail package here: https://store.plaync.com/home.php once the game goes retail. All it will be is an email with a retail key, a link to the client, and perhaps a pdf scan of the manual, judging by how they do the other games. you will not need more than that to play.
