Obviously monk is the best, because you can self heal and smite. Necromancer is not bad neither, as you can sell heal and putrid explosions. Though there aren't any public farming spots, farming is done best with a lot of mobs and AoE spells. However, AoE spells for the mesmer is limited. I can only think of a few skills, but Chaos Storm and Energy Surge in general.

There are lots of mobs that spam hexes on you, and an echoed shatter hex build can allow you to farm those pretty effectively, it basically becomes a high damage spammable ubernuke.

Besides that, illusion and domination really have no farming abilities. I guess you could take inspiration for channeling, a popular ability for farming builds. Unfortunately, farming elementalist style with e secondary won't work as you won't have the self healing energy storage spells, won't work well with monk without divine favor.

Poster above had a good suggestion about necro spells, and there's alot to be gained from using fast casting with most necro abilities. I do recommend you avoid death magic though, and try and do some sorta blood or curse thing, using the self heals in those lines.

As one fo the previous posters noted, anything with a monk secondary can farm, and it really has been these creatures that have caused all the farming issues (in my humble opinion)

I found a way to farm with a certain degree of sucess with my IW mesmer/warrior.* The key was finding tough mobs (to make the drops worthwhile) that wander around in small groups (you will never effectively take on hordes of nasties) that act in a predicatable, counterable way. This counters the two main problems that non monk secondary mesmers have in farming: lack of healing and lack of area effects.**

I was able to find such an area, and one that allowed to me to utilize skills that otherwise I would never have used.***

* I prefer the term soloing to farming, since I have come not from a MMORPG or whatever background but a MUD one.

** Of course, other secondaries can have relatively nice AoE, like Elementalist, but then they lack the strong healing.

*** Without revealing the area, which was most horribly nerfed recently and made me a sad mesmer, I will reveal that I made great use of mantra of earth, surprisingly enough.

P.S. All post need a minimus of 4 adverbs I think.

You should be able to do some decent farming with skills like

arcane echo
armour of mist
eruption with spirit of failure

and some PBAOEs

all vs melee foes of course...

Of course, I failed at the last hurdle....the dreaded adverb quota !!!!!

I thought about it more. And brought up some things that is needed:

Strong damage is not needed for farming, you need survaviabilty, heals are the best, but Protection skills are okay too. Most of the most general farming mobs are melee, because you can kill them all together instead of one at a time. So you might want a +AL to melee as an armor stat. So, I've thought about it more, and pretty much every race is farmable.

Not in specific order

1. Monk - Heal will make you survive long, Protection will make you last long, but most protection spells require a lot of recharge, so think about that too. Smiting could be to output damage, as I said earlier, Mesmer's not the type of profession to stick 20 Flesh Golems with Conjure Phantasms.

2. Warrior - With defensive stances, you can keep a 75% block during the whole process. The problem is, long recharge time and you cannot use any skills or it will terminate the stance. If you get 5 stances, all at 5 seconds. You can keep toggling 1 by 1. (Each normally has about 45 second recharge). Healing Signet is okay too but make sure to use a stance when using it so you don't lose more health than already gained. The shield is useful, but it will not make much of a difference.

3. Necromancer -One of my favorite, it can heal and output damage. As monk except somewhat un-usual. When you farm, you might want to sometime drag weaker monsters you can kill them for their corpse. Such as dragging Mergoyle for Ettins (patched so don't think about it). You can gather up minions and/or putrid explosion and use poison nova.

4. Ranger - It's pretty good, but with mesmer's fast casting, it really shines. With 16 in fast casting, skill preperation is cut in half. Therefore, some skills that you might want to output fast, such as Troll Urgent, Antidote Signet will cast faster. You can also mass cast traps and run away.

5. elementalist - A strange one, but I've seen it done, more with primaries though. It is especially good for AoE spells and some self heals. Ether Renewal and Aura of Restoration all heal, but it is best with Elementalist's Energy Storage.

Yea so far ive been very pleased with my Necro secondary [but i am using Death magic as opposed to suggested cursing]. Simply put:

Rotting Flesh [disease]
Necrotic Traversal [poison]
Well of Suffering [-x degeneration]
Putrid Explosion [another area damage]
Deathly Swarm [straight damage dont need a corpse, just one to finish off a few ]

If i get that far i generally start healing via Soul Feast [if there are corpses] or Ether Feast [inspiration]. Altertenately i would summon minions and leech healing off them.

Soul Feast is an an instant recharge healing spell, you cant ask for something better which heals 200+ hp one shot [potentially if you have 40 energy and 4 corpses....]

Only need those corpses, so yes as someone suggested, you will be probably be forced to drag along a few "easy-kill" mobs with you to generate corpses if need be. Alternately you have to depend on Minions [again with fast casting you should be able to summon minions and leech health from them pretty fast too].

and of course dont forget Energy Tap and such [all in inspiration] to keep the energy up.

Epidemic works well with many Necro spells to make them all AOE, like rotting fleah for example.

R/Mo

I've read numerous times on this forum that the AoE E/Mo is the most efficient dual profession for soloing and hunting. (The term "farming" doesn't make any sense whatsoever.) Several videos have been shown which demonstrate the solo hunting capabilities of the AoE E/Mo. The Monk primary looks interesting, but before level 20 I'd rather not be depended upon as a support character.

You could use this build:

Channeling
Zealot's Fire
Orison of Healing
Healing Touch
Healing Hands (elite)/Shield of Judgement (elite)
Balthazar's Spirit
Symbol of Wrath
Healing Breeze

12 Smiting Prayers
10 Healing Prayers
8+2 Inspiration Magic

All you have to do is find melee mobs that don't have any enchantment removal or interrupts and you're set.

Once again, this is not so much a mesmer soloing build, but a monk build with one mesmer skill.

TONE MONKS! Hehehehe

Just kidding, had to say it.

P.S. Inconcievely, hardly, barely, boldy, and well

Me/Mo can also farm melee with

Channeling
Zealot's Fire
Divine Boon
Balthazar's Spirit
Balthazar's Aura
Stance (Physical Resistance, appropriate Mantra, whatever)
Mark of Protection (elite)
Arcane Echo (on Mark)

Of course, Mo/Me is better at it, but oh well.
