The holier then thou attitude AKA elitests
Apophis Jaan
This is one aspect of online games I dispise, yet every single one has them. These people with their "I'm better then you because your new" attitude. I HATE these people with a passion, just because I don't know a certain aspect of the game doesn't make you superior to me.
These people that look for reasons to make them selves seem superior to other players, usually by time spent playing. If someone doesn't know a certain aspect of the game, they usually start with the mockery and cries of "n00b" (god I hate that *profanity* word!). They expect everyone to know every little intricacy of the game right out of the box.
For *profanity* sake! Give people time to learn! Some of us have lives outside of the friggin game. These people and their attitude make it harder for new people to find groups and thus enjoy the game. These people tarnish our gaming time with bitching, mockery and inflated egoes. These people ruin the community, by spreading their god forsaken attitude to other people. Making some players feel this is how it needs to be, that new people really are the devil (or some tripe like that).
Well to all you people out there (you know who you are). CHILL THE *profanity* OUT! It's just game, some of people are still learning the ropes. Give them time, help them along. No I wont kick them from the party because they dont know what a smite is. No I wont kick them because their build isnt the way you think it should be, no I wont kick them because they dont have any rank.
Also "newbie" is not synomynous with "idiot", a new player isnt necessarily a bad player. Also a so-called "experienced" player isnt necessarily a good player. Just because your an asshole with a self-inflated sense of superiority doesn't make you superior. Don't be a prick in-game just because your a loser in real life. Don't be an ass to new players to make up for your life's inadequacies.
I could go on and on and on. But I'll end with this...Grow up people.

Are you saying that you are holier than the people who you say are saying that they are holier than the "n00bs"?
Aloren
The elitist attitude you have mentioned is truly a microcosm of real life. You get elitists in games, and in everyday life. It does suck, but ya just need to not let it affect you to much.

"n00bs" will eventually become elitests, who make fun of the "n00bs", who become elitests, and so on and so on.

I try as hard as I can to stop this from starting. I'll take all the non-magic items I find late in the game and give them out to those poor blokes asking "Can you spot me some gold?" or "Could someone spare a good weapon?" They always appreciate it and ask me how I can pay them back.
I always tell them "Be nice to noobs later on."

Yeah, there will always be people with those attitudes but it really strikes me as both funny and sad that within a game that people will look down on others. Go to the strategy forums and you'll see quite a few people actually getting worked up and insulting people simply because they are new or just want to have a fun build instead of an "uber" one.
DarrenJasper
Trust me, it will never end. It's the reason a lot of them play these games - in real life, they feel inferior to everyone so they need a reality in which they are superior to most. I remember in EQ1 it was always, "not level 50 yet? oh I don't have to talk to you then. level 50, but you haven't been to the plane of fear yet huh? bye noob. oh, you haven't been to fear 50 times like me? don't waste my time. I'll just click my pegasus cloak and float my full-rubicite ass away". Don't try to fight it, they'll always have something on you, and the only way to beat them is to give up your life like they have, which isn't worth it.
Tactical-Dillusions
I was a noob once but just because i have finished the game with two characters doesn't make me any more superior.
For example, i am not a great team leader and prefer to follow others instructions, even if i know what to do myself. Sometimes i go with the flow and let other people make their own errors.
I like to look at my old screenshots which i randomly took when i was levelling my ranger. It makes me laugh to look at the basic skills i had and even my melandru's stalker which i miss at times (i traded him for a lizard) .
I hate the imperialist attitude too and the OP is right.

ran across such a person- a monk of all people! we were doing d'alessio mission, people wanted the bonus so i thought fine. I start going and killing everything , the monk kept saying wait wait wait because the so called leader hasn't loaded. I do just fine, thye caught up, we got to the village, I said don't kill the random mobs, head straight for banik, they ignored me, banik dies, oh well, I ignore them and keep going to confessor doric, died once on the way when 5 ghouls surrounded me. I got a res with namecalling and flaming, and bragging that he knows EVERYTHING about the game and that he won't heal me anymore. I said Fine I won't do not one thing then I headed to confessor Doric and did nothing at all but just stand there at the shrine until the end of the mission. when we hit divinity I left the group. I hate braggarts and smart alecs lik that.
some people say I may be a jerk for doing that, but the monk purposedly made everybody who hasn't played through the mission before fail the bonus to lack of knowledge for giggles.

I know there will always be people like that, but why are they the majority? Or at least it seems that way, I have a hard time getting into a group without 5 or 6 of em.

i kno, i hate those kind of ppl too, esp in the beginnin when the game was first released, yea i kno there was a beta, but f***, do you have to go around calling everyone a noob just b/c they didn't play it? i remember i get a lot of bad talk from this one guy cus i didn't kno what a sigil was, wtf, ive played for 2 days and ur giving me a hard time??? i always like to go to towns and if i see ppl askin for help, i like to help 'em out, cus there were a few good ppl willing to help me out
yea, i do the same, ppl askin for gold or for items, i just give it to them, i rmember a guy in ascalon wanted to buy 3 iron, and i went to him and i gave him the 3iron +117 more iron and about 15 steel. just wish ppl would stop givin players such a hard time, i mean, s**t, you weren't always as great as you think you are now

Skill sometimes comes with experience. Especially in a game where making a perfect build is the key to victory. If you go and play any game that you are new to, do you expect to win every time using perfect strategies? How bout get headshots every time? Of course not. If you're new, you are bound to suck for a bit. It's nothing you can't get over.

I tend to have an elitist attitude, but I usually keep it to myself. I hate those who have such an elitist attitude and have to prove how elite they are by opening their mouths and being general assholes about it.
If you know you're better then the person, then it's your responsibility to teach them what they don't know. If you don't want to team with newbies, by all means don't. Go team with other elitists and you can brag to each other as much as you want. Leave the poor newbies alone, for they will in time become just as elite and will probably be in your party anyway later on.

I don't think that I'll ever be able to have an elitist attitude within this game; I've been playing since the beta and I still feel like a n00b.

On a side note, not all people that have been around since the first betas are like that, I actually got served the same thing myself last night just because I was in L.A. with a level 11 and I’m one that’s been around for a while.
Was picked up in a group and then told I was too low level and needed to play the game a bit more to *learn and level* (their words). I laughed it off when I was kicked, before they even thought of asking or noticing I had the appropriate armor and all possible skills opened for my level and location.
I don’t think it’s related to level and how long have you played the game but how and why you play the game, oh and maybe just a bit of narrow mindedness mixed in there.
I do have to admit I’m slightly asking for it since I also had to make this character a Ne/Me…. Oh are we ever misunderstood, but things are slowly turning around. Still never had so much problems getting in a group in my GW gaming time… lol

1.) Click the little triangle in your chat bubble
2.) Take the check mark out of "local" chat and "emotes."
3.) Close and play the game as desired.

but the monk purposedly made everybody who hasn't played through the mission before fail the bonus |
We get into the mission and the monk says, "Oh, this one. great. follow me." I ask if he'd done it before, and mentioned I had as well. He tell us that he's ascended two characters already, and starts barking orders to everyone. Just as I'm about to lead the group toward the bonus, the monk says, "screw the bonus. not doing it." I say, "I know the bonus. We can do it." And he says, "no, you all are too weak to do the bonus and i won't be able to keep you alive."
Now in the last mission I was in, all of my teammates died at one point and each one dropped (to my disappointment and surprise) before letting me res them (I carry Ressurect), leaving me all alone in the mission. So here I am, a lvl 9 death magic necro, alone with the bonus and mission ahead of me... the bonus with the four flame keepers and then having to escort Rurik across the bridge with the Charr onslaught at the end. Well I went ahead by myself and successfully completed both the bonus and the mission.
So I say to this monk, "lol, I just completed the last mission solo. I really think we can handle the ghosts. That's what the others signed up for." The others all said they would like to do the bonus as well. And the monk says, "you go ahead and do it then, and then die. i'm not doing it."
Needless to say we rushed through the mission like a bat out of hell, without doing the bonus, all the while listening to this uber lvl 10 monk barking orders and talking down to us like we were little kids. Not fun.

You know why people make fun of people and call everyone n00bs? It's because, since online video games is their life, they have to make sure that they are good at it to feel like they have accomplished something in the world. And when people aren't as experienced as they are (because they have lives), then they start to get annoyed with them and call them n00bs. These are the same kind of people that live at home with their parents til their 30's and wake up at 5 p.m. just to eat and play Guild Wars, so you know what, you should feel sorry for them.
Luggage
"Sorry, we are doing bonus. Meet up in Dist 1." *drop*

Just as these 'elitists' are overgeneralizing inexperienced players as hopeless 'n00bs', the lot of you are overgeneralizing experienced players as elitists with no life that still live in their parent's basement. That's an elitist attitude just the same, so you're no better than them.

Sir Hammonsweet
No, I didn't say that all experienced players are like that. I am just saying the people that torment other people for not being as experienced as they are and constantly put down people for being worse than them probably are. It seems to me like the people that brag about being awesome at this game really don't have much else to brag about or live for.
Silmor
Well, we don't know that. Some might feel a need to put down others online to compensate for their real-life weaknesses, others may have more complex reasons for their behaviour. I just don't see the reason why anyone would need to conclude people like that probably have no life, being just more of the same 'holier than thou' attitude, unless they too need it to feel better about themselves.
Sir Hammonsweet
I dunno why certain people act like that. Everyone acts differently I guess. That's the beauty of people, is that we are all different.

And yeah, I've experienced other "elite" players going through missions... some of them were nice and helpful to the team, and others were rude and condescending. It's not a side effect of being a good or experienced player, rather than a personal attitude one has toward other people in general.

Just thank the heavens that in real life, nobody in their right mind says "noob" in the spoken English language.

Everyone in the world is a noob at something, and everyone in the world also has something that they can do better than others. What I mean is, they may think that they're better at the game just because they played more than you, but you probably know how to carve something beautiful out of a piece of jade, and they don't. You are probably a great artist or musician but they aren't.

Well I wasnt trying to generalizing, the elitist attitude transends levels, time played and any other in game goals. Some people feel the need to put down those who cant do something as well as them and this bothers me. There is no excuse to why these people get frustrated to the point of insulting the other player because he/she is inexperienced. Just today I was doing a UW run, one monk kept complaining that we werent orginized enough, that we werent doing the run the proper way. Well instead of helping us get more orginized, she just continued to bitch and moan that we were making stupid mistakes. So we get to the smites and when the tank runs foward to get the attention of the buggers, one of the other warriors runs foward also. Well that through off the aggro and ppl got killed, the monks and the nuker survived since us warriors were able to wall em off at least. Anyways, instead of salvaging the group and rebirthing the warriors she just proclaims "Well that went well. Your all idiots you know that!" and leaves, along with two others though they didnt make any assinine comments.
Instead of being constructive and offering strategy she just got frustrated and annoyed, barking insults at the group for the percieved imperfections. It's people like that we need to be rid of. People like that who ruin others enjoyment of the game. There needs to be more helpful experienced people with patience.
I'd like to think I'm one of those, granted not in Guild Wars (not that Im not a nice person in GW, just that Im not experienced enough in GW yet). But for example I'm relatively skilled in Battlefield 2 (usually end up in the top 3). But when Im in a squad that doesnt really have a game plan I dont get frustrated and insult my mates, I offer assistance and strategy so that we can get it together and start kicking some ass. If someone asks how to do something I tell them, I dont yell "read the f'ing manual".
Sometimes I think online games should require an attitude test, so that we can filter out the assholes prehand.

i never will understand why people feel superior to others in a game.
when i played daoc and was high ranked pvp player i was getting anyone in my team who was standing around and looking for a pvp group.
even if the people were not high lvl, had low pvp rank or were totally new to pvp.
i was quite shocked when about 90% of that people thanked me for taking them with me and said that other high ranked players just call them noobs and don`t bother to even speak to them ...
it`s just a game. people should really relax and do a reality check.
i still can`t believe how many people in GW are crying "rank2/rank3 player looking for experienced team !".
i would never invite such a person into a team
just for the reason that i think these people have to be dumb to think that fame does mean anything.
and i prefer smart players over dumb ones - even if that means that i have to team with 100000 players to find the right ones

We should be grateful they don't call us "olds" or some equally ridiculous monniker.
Here's a quick story since we're sharing:
I was in LA trying to buy and unlock superior runes. I got a few nibbles, then finally one guy asks "how much money do you have?" My natural instinct was suspicion, because the question was aggressive bespoke a lack of patience. Still, as an interested buyer I knew I wanted what he was selling, if indeed he was selling anything.
I asked how many runes he had to sell. 19. I replied that I wish I'd met him a week ago when I had some real money.
"How much do you have?" he asked again.
I took a quick look at my bankroll.
"Around 70k," I replied.
"I wipe my ass with 70k."
"Congrats."
I tried whispering him again to see how many runes I could buy- but he'd signed off, leaving me to wonder if he had any interest in selling to begin with.
Silly me, here I thought he was interested in selling, when it turned out all he wanted to do was stroke his ego. One can only imagine why he left- fear of me not liking him despite his huge bank account?
The punchline: It must take a lot of money to wipe an ass that big.

Ok, but do you think they ignored what you said, because you went off and started killing things without waiting for everyone to load into the mission.
Not all players have a top of the line Broadband connection or have even done the mission before, and have to wait for the loading.
Maybe it was pay back for you being a bit selfish, whether you can handle yourself or not, in not waiting for everyone to load into the mission.
You just showed the others, that why should we listen to this guy if he isn't going to listen to us. Others follow your actions and not what you say.
In my eyes, that is sort of eliteism.
