Whats the benefit of ascending? What do you get?

You automaticaly go to lvl 20, and you've proven that you are decent at the game. That is pretty much it.

I'm pretty sure they changed this from auto-level 20 to 50,000xp in the last patch.

Really, well than no instant lvl 20 (I didn't notice either way as I was already lvl 20).

you still get level 20 those already at twenty get the 50000 now

You also get a snazzy T-shirt to give to your less experienced characters that says "My other toon ascended, and all I got was this lousy T-shirt"

There are other advantages that come along when you ascend -

You get the option to change your secondary profession, for example;
You get quests for the last 30 attribute points that you are missing when you level to 20
You get to progress in the game into the areas with the highest armour values, as well as special armours that cost an arm and a leg and look pretty.

you get to see the damned coolest instance I've yet to see in the game (the grain of sand) and some of the coolest cinematics I've seen so far... and the satisfaction of a job well done...

Although I'm deeply disappointed that the only way I can look inside the mesa at augery rock is to fight... the place looks so cool I want to go in and look around, maybe take some pics.

sorry but you do not go to level 20 anymore. you get 50k exp.

also it does not mean you are "good" at the game, it proves you can get through the first part of it. hopefully by this point you have retained some skills, but sadly enough a lot do not (:

what ascension really does is allow you to now capture elite skills in the rest of the game, and find out more about the storyline

You gain access to the much talked about tombs and HoH.
