Guildwars costs about $50 in a store (give or take), once you buy it though, you do not have to pay annoying monthly fees to play... its much like Diablo where its free to play online. You just have to buy the game.
The idea here is that ArenaNet will make their money on expansions and such, which to me is a much better and accountable way of running an MMORPG. (when paying $15 a month for some of these games, you have to wait long periods of time sometimes for expansions and such... if the company only makes money when they release an expansion, then they are much more likely to do so at more regular intervals.
