I believe it's intended to be a higher currency than 100K.
Take the stone of jordan (soj) from D2. It was a completely useless ring for most characters, but it was just the standard form of currency, etc.

Rubies, along with other gems like sapphires will be *most likely* used for the Ele's third eye in the fissure armor set.
Rubies, for Pyromancer....Sapphires for Hydromancer...and they'll like introduce couple of other gems as well.
