Honestly, one of the reasons I love this game is because it's not TOO addicting

All the MMOs I've played in the past have been addicting as hell, mainly Diablo II. Now, not that Guild Wars is a bad game, but it's getting a bit boring after time. Mostly what I do now is trade and screw around. That's the beauty of it though. I don't feel the attraction to play this game 24/7 like I did with other games. I can play 1 hour of this game and get tired of it, but not get bored of it enough to quit it.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I think people were making reference to the combination of the words Jew and picture of a Factory, which reminds people of either the holocaust, or schindler's list.

I doubt they were being anti-semetic, so let's all take a breath.

It was a joke on my part, but this thread sure hasn't gotten of topic, has it?

So you're saying instead of playing GW night and day until you burn out and never touch it again, it will hold sway over you intermittently for the rest of your life.

lol... not so addictive? I played diablo a couple hours a day till I beat it once and never got into trading or pk duels... In about 13 days I've logged nearly 100 hours I hit the game as soon as I get home, go to sleep 2 hours later than I should, eat at my pc, go home from work at lunch time to play, and while on my breaks come here to talk about it. This game is THE MOST addictive thing I've ever done... and I have a lot of chemical experience...

I don't play it in any way which could be classified by a label. I can go for a couple of days without playing it at all, usually if I have other stuff to do or places to go. Then I can suddenly jump into it and not leave Tyria for days...

Still not bored with it. I'm not a player who's only interested in acquiring items and skill points, though. This game can last as long as your imagination will let it. Unfortunately all-too-many people have no imagination whatsoever; all they think about is items, runes, skill points, and how to get to the end as fast as they can. I find it quite worrying that people can say 'I see no interest in exploring if I don't get any rare items out of it'.

The good thing about GW is that it gives you what you want.
Want great landscapes? Just take a look around, anywhere, you'll get them.
You want an addictive story and a plot that is not obvious? there, you have it.
You want competition? Get into the arena.
You want to play every single class in the game and use all the skills? you can do it, it takes effort, but you can.
You want to fool around? I've seen people weird out for hours just with /dance.

And then there's the fact you don't have a set number of skill points, of attribute recovery, or whatever. And I haven't played much yet, I still have to learn most of the quirks of it.

But I tell you, I bought it last friday evening and didn't get offline till saturday night. Late night. And it's been... dunno, at least 15 years since it happened to me. I think it was The Eternal Champion, more than 24 hours of reading with 2 food breaks.
Gotta love GW.

Cookies for everyone!

BTW, I have avatars turned off (so pages will load more quickly on my Treo), so I just ignored the off-topic stuff.

maybe the Online RPG plotlines are more lacking than most RPG titles I've played...but the plot/story for this game is awful. My 3 yr old daughter writes more interesting stories.

Yeah, but little girl stories have bigger plot holes. I mean, they're fantastically interesting, sure. But if a grizzly bear did come in your room in the middle of the night and ate your teddybear, how did it get in? And how did your little fairy (which is 3 inches tall and made of porcelain)frighten it away? And why are there no footprints? And isn't this your teddybear, under your bed?

I think you'd have to read a story written by a 12 yr old child with down syndrome before you'd experience the number of plot holes the GW PvE story has

I'm flat-out addicted to guild wars. no questions asked. I sit at the computer 13 hours a day-yes I know that's unhealthy-eating/drooling/telling my brothers to shuddup because I'm trying to hear a cinematic through headphones.

I haven't a problem with the story. The narrative needs some work, though. The main problem, however, is the fact that if you haven't played it before you can (and probably will) unwittingly skip ahead of huge chunks of the story without even realising it. The first time I played through the game I went from Nolani to Lion's Arch without doing a single mission. I didn't even know Lion's Arch was there, so I wasn't trying to go anywhere in particular. I had no idea why there were Ascalon refugees outside of the city...

If game X is more addictive than game Y, then your having more fun playing game X. So you would rather have less fun because the game doesnt draw you in as much?

Publishers strive to make the most addictive games possible. Sometimes game so good they result in fatalities. From wowguru.com:

Child dies while parents play WoW
Filed by zeeg on June 21 2005 [ Last comment by Unregistered ]
According to EuroGamer an infant left while its parents were playing World of Warcraft has led to it's death.

A Korean husband and wife are facing criminal charges after their baby daughter died when they left her alone in order to play World of Warcraft.

According to news site Chosun, police say the parents left their four month-old child alone in a bedroom while they went to play the MMORPG at a local Internet cafe.

When they returned five hours later, the baby was lying on her stomach and had died of suffocation.

"We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home like usual, but the game took longer that day," the couple is reported as saying.

Following a police investigation, the husband and wife will be required to defend their actions in court.

"It's unfortunate, because the tragedy could have been averted if the couple had just left their daughter with Yu's mother-in-law, who lived upstairs from them," said police.

"We booked the pair on criminal charges, judging that when you consider the situation, they were responsible for their daughter's death."

I tend to agree with the "not too addicting" comment, but not based on "getting bored".

Simply put: If travel for 3 hours through a jungle and suddenly die and realise that i have to repeat the entire 3 hours again....then i will just quit and leave it for another day (or else i'll be too frustrated to have the required patience).

Compared to MMORPGS which do not have this particular feature [or rather i've not really ran into them in such a fashion that i dread going through hordes of spiders for the zillionth time [Blood and Smoke anyone?] , you have this effect of

"Lets just try and get a few metres further , or lets just try to get that extra 500xp"....GW just don't have that, both are either a "large undertaking" or will not in fact advance you in any way. [Thus there is no incentive to creep a little further and see what happens, you either GO ALL THE WAY or you STOP].

I've found myself OFTEN, completing a mission, checking my watch and see it's 10pm and then i'm actually forced to make a judgement call on whether i will attempt the next mission or not. In the end, i just don't even start and i just quit [even though i might have had another hour of playtime]. Other games you wouldnt stop for this, you would go on and realise at 12pm "oh crap, look at the time" .

What a cool thread... and so many true points of view.

Trouble with guildwars is... well, How exactly do you stop playing?.. its not like you can cancel your subscription.. even if you stopped playing for any length of time.. its still there.. you've bought it already, its just like solitaire... lol, it will always be played at sometime.

though for me Guilwars IS addictive, yes I grow tired of doing something for ages.. but thats the same with all games (ever done an 8 hour task force in CoH only for it to fail?)

But its right.. I do like to chill out on guildwars, chat to guild members.. hang around the fountain, help the newbs.. do a bit of buying and selling...

I still think this 'relaxed' atmosphere is down to the level cap, theres just no scrambling around to get one level higher than your friends..

GW is definatly more of a fine wine to be enjoyed and savoured.. not guzzled down like a 24pack of Stella on a friday night
