You go up first to "aggro" first and hope the bad guys don't teleport or run pass you to get to the yummy mages. I don't believe there is such a concept as hate and there is no "provoke" though I bet some warriors wish they did. I play an elementalist though so I may be wrong. Let's hear from a warrior.

There's no hate, no provoking. Tanking in Guild Wars consists simply of running in first, well ahead of all the paper-armour types, and hoping that through sheer luck and shit AI the monsters don't peel off you. There's rarely any need for a tank in PvE, and no need whatsoever in PvP. Warriors are called on mostly to do damage.

Actually a good warrior can make a world of difference in UW or Fissure, and certain missions

there does seem to be some concept of hate, but it is very toned down compared to 11
Certain skills seem to draw more attention than others, like frenzy seems to make it easier to peel a mob off of the squishy targets.
I wish I had a hate modifier though...lol

It is not so much about the "tank" keeping agro as other players passing it off.
The AI will go for the weaker players first. In a good group the healer/casters will stay back and not engage or get close to the mobs until they are attacking the warrior. Once a mob is on a caster the best way to get them back off is to have a warrior attack them and the caster run, preferably to the other side of the warrior, as body blocking does work.
