please help, my dsl is screwy!!

ok ive had this problem for about 2 weeks now and nothing has fixed it, even did a full restore of my comp (I wiped everything and reinstalled from scratch, nbot just a factory restore) and i still load webpages at like 20+ sec's plus when i go onto something like starvcraft i have 6 red bars, ive contacted my dsl co. about this and we went through all the steps, like pinging my ip address, pinging other websites ect ect, and everything works fine...so wtf is going on!!!!???? ive scanned my comp for viruses, scanned my comp for spyware, and even tried restoring again, and nothing works.... and now my dsl provider says it's a fault with my comp and if they send a tech out it will cost 45.95 to fix it.... the only thing i can think of is this, my cable modem is hooded up to my computer via a usb port, which you would think would work just fine, right? any suggestions on how to fix this prob will be most appreciated as the BWE is fast approaching and i want o be running at fdull perforamce

Specs? Modem type? Is your modem hot? Got latest drivers, etc? Wireless router? Do you use a router or modem? What's your modem? What's you network card? How is it set up? Extension cables? Microfilters?

ok dell dimension 4600 2.8 ghz p4, no the modems not hot, i run 512 mb of DDR ram, 2 40 gig HD's no routers, just a modem, its a motortola surfboard cable modem, no extenstion cables, its pluged directly into the cable outlet in my room, its running direct from the wall into the modem, from the modem to my comp via usb cable, and i got a firewall up but it dosent matter wether its down or not, still got the same problem, i tried ti with and without all the windows updates/ service packs as well...

Select cable set up, usually it has 2 or 3 options for configs, just go with one of them, reboot the computer and see if this solves it. Maybe a bad router or router set routing from your host. This program can change the settings so your host will route around slow or dead routers. Just in case it isn't something on your end or your service provider, but one of theirs .

You might check the cable connections, make sure they are clean. If the cable connection itsellf is that coaxial type, they many times wear out from stress in one direction. 10 dollars max at radio shack for a new connector and the crimping tool.

ok, i dl'd that prog sin and it didnt help, do you think i may have damaged the modem by haveing to near ym comp's subwoofer for my speakers?

Anything is possible. If you haven't moved it already please do, but if it were me, i'd check the cable connector. I live they use rg 58 or rg shielded cable for cable connections, and the connectors "crimp" on around the shielding. The Actual lead is the copper wire, some 1/32 to 1/20th of an inch thick i believe, very easy to break or snap if you move stuff around. It can also be the cable is pushed to tightly against the wall, bending the wires around in the connector.

i moved it already. my main problem is i think it has something to do wit the cable hook up, but the cable co i deal with says if it isnt they will charge me like 50 bux for comming out, and even if it is there problem i doubt theyll take the responsibility for it, and then charge me the 50 bux anyways...

just go to radio shack and tell them you need 2 male cable connectors (ones a back up if you make a mistake) and a crimper to put them on. Less than 10 dollars and it's fixed. Just cut off the old connector and put the new one on. The knit mesh, usually a gray or silver in color, is under the black so just cut about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of that black off but don't cut through the shielding, you'll see it right away. Now peel the shielding back. Then there is a plastic core, in the center is the copper lead, cut the plastic without cutting the copper lead to maybe 1/16th of an inch above the peeled back ground wires. now put the connector on and crimp it.

just a small note:
i am somewhat confused when you mention dsl and cable connections. are you on satellite broadband? if you are, i hear that stuff is horrid for gaming as your pings tend to be incredibly slow. but if you truly fixed your problem, you have nothing to worry about..

satellite broadband can have up to 1.5 SECONDS lag from the extra bounces

someone i know uses 28.8 dial up because sat lag is a deal breaker
