Crafting Weapons. How??

Guys. I heard people say that gathering hilts, grips, strings enable you to craft/upgrade your own weapon. I also heard that storm bow can be created from grip + string. My main character at the moment is an Ele/Mo. What do I need to create a powerful staff/wand of some sort? Or upgrade my current weapon? What's needed? I'm pretty sure I can't use hilts, grips to make wands.

Also, I've identified a few sword of fortitude....something fortitude...the list goes on. Each of these items have the 'hilt UNLOCKED' window pop up after I've identified it. Would someone be so kind to explain to me these fortitude items, weapon parts, upgrading?

I mean crafting by yourself, not by those armor, weapon npcs found in town.

Any help/suggestions/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

later in the game (not sure where your at right now) you will get expert extraction kits) this will allow you to use them on weapons that you have to remove the bonus items on the weapons and then you can use them on other weapons. This is self crafting.

and don't get frustrated when using expert salvage kits - there is no gaurantee that you will get a rune from an item when you salvage it. it's random.

Actually thats not true anymore. The update two wed ago fixed it so you will always salvage a rune the first time from drops. Upgrades can still fail and trying to get a rune out of your own armor will still fail though.

Whoever told you that is a liar and should be shot. You don't make weapons, you upgrade them.

actually if you think about it you are crafting them.. you as a toon are placing a new string on your bow so that woudl be crafting them.. now if you had to take it to a weaponsmith to have it made then you would be taken it to be upgraded

so its not really a lie to a roleplayer

Semantics. Craft all you want, you're never going to pull out a Storm Bow out of a string and grip alone.

I got my Expert Salvage kit in Old Ascalon from a merchant. You are at Dunes? Check out your merchants!

Hmm...extraction=salvage right? I know they mean the same thing, but I thought it's another item which differs from salvage in a way?

I thought expert salvage kit has a higher chance of salvaging runes from items. Other than that, it has nothing to do with upgrading items.

Correct me if I'm wrong, if I see 'hilt unlocked' or 'grip unlocked', does that mean I can salvage that 'grip' or 'hilt' from the item? Then I can use that grip to upgrade another weapon?

Nay, expert salvage kit is sardelac as earliest. Also no way that person could mean Dunes of Despair & not notice what merchants have.

To OP avoid buying weapons from [weapon]-npc:s because they are overpriced & not very good (with some exceptions).

While there isn't a merchant in Old Ascalon that sells ESKs there is one in The Great Northern Wall, which is sooner than Sardelac.

Okay, yes when you see "hilt unlocked" or some other upgrade piece, then you can take an Expert Salvage kit and salvage the upgrade from the weapon (the weapon is destroyed, but you get the upgrade item).

To use the upgrade item, you double click the upgrade and then click the weapon you want to use it on. Of course, upgrade items only apply to the correct type of weapon (if the upgrade came from an axe, then it can only be used on another axe).

This is also true of staffs (but not wands). Staffs have "wraps" that can be salvaged from one staff and applied as an upgrade to another. Wands do not have this feature I'm pretty sure.

You should have been able to buy an Expert Salvage kit for 400g at the very first vendor you met post-sear.

Use the Expert Salvage kit on *at least* all blue/purple items. If used on blue/purple armor dropped from dead baddies, the Expert Salvage kit will yield Runes that can be applied to your own Armor.

Runes have their own set of rules (i.e. runes of same type do not stack -- minor, major, superior rune of X, if you use three, you only get benefit of one of them). There are pages about all this stuff here on Guru, as well as using the Search button in a forum will yield tons of info.

G'luck,

If you mean the first merchant you come across, which is in Ascalon City, then please verify because this is not the case for my characters.

My bad, you are right. Expert Salvage Kit is available at Sardelac Sanitarium, which is probably the closest post-sear merchant.

Thanks,

Actually, please read my post just above yours for more info on ESKs.
