I have seen the build in the Ranger Basics thread, and have even run into some in a few Arenas. How do they compare to Warrior primaries?
I can see how Expertise provides an advantage in the great skills it has, but is there any other strong point?
R/W Melee?!

Disavantages:
1) Will get targeted.
2) Cannot sustain damage that a W/R can. Trust me, your health goes down dramatically.
3) Not really that useful, if you're going Melee use a Warrior instead since they have Strength. Expertise is good... but you're not exactly going to be using much 10 eng Ranger skills. 5 eng a Warrior can support. =)

2] This is probably the only point I agree with you on. However, what's the point of using a W/R?
3] Expertise applies to all attack skills, including those of a Warrior.

With all those elementalists out there you can't argue against a base 100 AL against elemental damage.
Edit: The above works nicely against the occasional (elementalist-fueled) unexpected gank that an organized team may pull off that would work better on a warrior than on a ranger, especially if superior runes are being used.
Expertise reduces the costs of certain warrior skills to the point where you could spam them, something you wouldn't be able to do on a warrior primary. The energy advantage is further solidified with the additional pip of regen you get. The general idea when using a melee R/W is get as many special attacks in a row as possible, using this energy advantage.
Edit: To clarify above you wouldn't be able to spam individual skills, just spam skills in general.
You also get Tiger's Fury, a very good DPS buff, and if you like inflicting conditions you can use Apply Poison (though condition removal is very good and this is more of a novelty than a real bonus).

So what? In organized PvP you aren't a high-priority target, although you're higher on the list than a warrior primary and teams may try to pick you off under the "he's a ranger, but getting really close when he shouldn't be, therefore he's ripe for killing" assumption. If you're being focused fired, as a ranger, the monks and casters on your team are probably dead anyway.Edit: The above works nicely against the occasional (elementalist-fueled) unexpected gank that an organized team may pull off that would work better on a warrior than on a ranger, especially if superior runes are being used.

Edit: I swear I've seen a thread that covered the power of a melee R/W recently. I'll edit again once I find it.

Thank you. I also remember seeing it recently, but it didn't turn up in a search.
