Only two things matter on weapons, it must be max damage, and it should have a good, usable modifier for your class/style. I find that +20% damage while hexed doesnt work as well for me as....well anything else.
If you have those two things, which is extremely easy to get, then you can just customize your weapon with upgrades that can be gotten for very little gold. The exception to this is mods that add +30 health, just get a +28 health for about 1/100th the price.

Your brain is the best weapon in the game...if you know how to use it ;P

I believe it has been figured that the best possible weapon is max damage +35% - no mods ever total more than that. Of course, that is just damage.

The best weapon in the game is a well disiplined, well organized player that understands the pros and cons of his/her character and can exploit the pros and diminish the cons in order to maximize his or her capabilities to fulfill their job and help the team.
THAT is the best weapon in the game.

Holy crap enough with the bad metaphors guys, one was more than enough :P
These are all running off memory so take them as approximates for the max damage
Hammer:18-35
Sword:12-27(no idea if thats right really might be 15 or something)
Staff/wand:11-22
Bow:**-27
Axe:No idea, I think max is 29-33

Max Bow dmg is 15-28
And a best wep that people see as is one that has a 15% dmg mod while health above 50% and with max wep dmg. Most prefer graphically-special weapons like fellblade, storm bow, chaos axe and etc..

I don't know about other professions...but as a Ranger I find great use for my 4 bows. I have an Ebon Longbow of Fortitude +20HP DMG +20%, Icy Longbow of Fortitude +26HP, Posioners Short Bow of Fortitude +26HP, and a Half Moon of Fortitude +26 HP....each of the bows have their own use. Ebon ofcourse inflicts earth damage...which generally does the most damage to most mobs. The Icy bow is awesome for any fire dealing elements...the poison bow I pull out when someone has inflicted poison on a foe...or I am using Apply Poison. Also a nice bow to pull out when I get poisoned as it both lengthens poison on a foe and decreases poison duration on me. And when I use any skill that increases bow speed I pull out the Half Moon because it fires faster than the other three.
I think having a couple of weapons with different modifiers benefits me as a ranger...though I can't comment on other professions.
btw...I really really LOVE the Fortitude grips
