hi guys, not only am i new to the forums but i just pre-ordered GW in time for probably the last BWE. im pretty psyhced to play. so heres what im asking

i come from playing d2x(diablo 2) and currently WoW...which isnt bad..actually prob a really good game...but 1 of blizz's downfalls is making games were u can achieve the highest lvl in like 8 days(if not less). this makes the longevity of the game much less then other games. so while iso a replacement for WoW i heard about GW(and that its free per month!). after looking into it and diggin up some info i think it looks really cool...and bc of the way proffessions werk it seems build possibilities r endless.

so after reading up i have decided to make a Ranger/?
? bc i dunt know what secondary i should do (hold on b4 u answer read on)

i will most likely start off and for the most part like to solo or be in small groups. i considered using a pet but from what i have read it seems like it isnt as great as it should be, maybe im wrong. in ne case from what i have read the ranger has like 2 minor healing type skills (1 increases hp regen and other is a party heal). bc originally i liked the idea of a ranger/monk (cant beat healing urself and others) but i think i would basically be picking monk for healing....

then i thought of maybe doin a ranger/necro...using DoT and arrows would seem in theroy a good way to deal a sustained amount of dmg....also a thought was the ability to get undead minions(r they of ne use?)...so i dunno i think i favor this more than a monk...

mesmer as a secondary might be really cool..but i am very unfamilar with what a messmer's streangths r and what would complament a ranger primary...the whole concept of a mesmer seems new to me(dunno only other mmorpg i played is WoW)

and finally i barely consider a elementalist or warrior...reason being if i use elementalist i would assume my energy consuption could become a hasle...and ive never really cared for the warrior class in ne game(usually seem like meat shields to me)

so i guess in short my quetion is monk/necro/mesmer as a secondary to a ranger primary?

and...what ranger skills and secondary skills would u recomend for a mainly solo character?

I think it takes a lot longer than 8 days to get the hgihest level in WoW... unless of course you are a Gimpy XD

Anyway, for your question about the solo thing. Guild Wars is partly, or should I say, mostly a game where you intereact with others. There are many quests that require you to have a party. Because of this, Guild Wars and each class was given their own special abilities but each has it's own certain weakness. Like Elementalists can be weak to warriors if they get too close.

And if you are really thinking about going solo all the way, necromancer or monk is what I reccomend for a secondary professions because of their healing/leeching abilities.

There are a lot of players here that like having a ranger primary there are great builds under the Builds section.

Also please take a look at the The English Language post, it's kind of hard to follow your wording

First off you need to look at the post about not using "chat speak" or really, take the time to make a clear post that people can read who don't speak "chat." The Admin's Notice is here .

Next, GuildWars highest level is 20, if you got level 60 in WOW in 8 days and feel that's low then you probably need to look at these links to see how GuildWars is different...

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=1856

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=1759

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=1414

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=2034

As far as your secondary I'd say search the Camfire Forum for "Ranger" builds and you'll probably get a number of build ideas to help you see the strengths and weakness of whatever choice you make.

Good luck!

As the others have stated, it can be very difficult to understand a post that seemingly ignores spelling, punctuation, and capitalization standards. When you arrive somewhere asking for advice, you'll get the best response if your request is clear and easy to understand.

With that in mind, please check out the stickied posts and the resources located in the front page. The New Player Center and Guides sections are both very useful, as well as Aladdar's FAQ.

Welcome to the boards.

Hi im new as well to GW, wasnt sure where to post so i thought ill post here on this thread.

I was thinking of creating a warrior/monk combo, and was wandering whether this is a good mix?

Also ive just preorded my copy of GW so i can play in this weekends event and i was wandering do the chars get wiped after every event or do you get to keep them, because of the website i ordered from it says your name will be reserved.

Finally have you got any tips for a newbie and any guilds i can join?

well my other topic was closed before i had a chance to ask more questions of those who provided any kind of information.

questions being:

Out of these 3 secondaries (monk/necro/mesmer) which would be best to mostly do solo and small groups (5 people or less) with a ranger primary?

Also what is the economy like? is there a auction house or area for tradeing? do items bind? (basically wil everything become worthless like in WoW after a month?)

If you have gramatical advice for me, spelling corrections, or tell me to do a search thats all wonderful advice too. However i did do search which is how i narrowed my selection to those 3, my question is much more specific which is the reason i have posted this question.

I have yet to play the game and will be able to this weekend, so aside from what i read i have no idea what the game is like. I would like to have an enjoyable time playing and comming here for advice and to share my own experience in the future.

(for those of you who complained about my spelling i have tried to acomodate you, however i have become very acustomed to "chat" talk. Sometimes it comes too natural..like on tests/school work. Also make sure your grammer/spelling is correct before correcting others, I could point out many gramatical/spelling errors in the other thread but i am not here to flame only to share ideas)

No auction house as far as I recall, items can be traded so long as they are not customized to you. You can customize weapons, for example, to increase their effectiveness but then you can no longer trade them to other players.

Someone who has played more recently can probably give you some details in that department.

As far as the best build goes... You will hear that there is no best build and you will hear a multitude of opinions about what the best build is. Play what you enjoy most is the best advice I can give. You will have a chance to experiment in the game as well and I think taking advantage of that would be a good plan.

As for your secondary options you listed? Try monk or mesmer. both give you options on healing yourself through Monk healing and protection spells...and mesmer inspiration spells/hexes.

As for the economy question? Economies are evolving things. by the time you get a handle on where it is going, it has most likely arleady gone by that point and become attuned to a different rate. Just figure this..if it seems like somebody is asking for too much..they probably are. Besides..game is still beta, economy is still revolving around the changes they do to the programming of options at this point. That won't settle until after game release anyway.

As Doctor says, there is no wholesaling/auction house. Trade is up to the individual player and his/her needs

I havent played but i have read more then enough about the game to know that like Doc said there is no one better secondary class for ranger, i think it all depends on what u want to do with ure char... if u are looking for heals proctection or w/e then ya go monk... or if u want a army of minions following u be a necro. I think all would be effective in there own way and against certain things, as far as i can tell there is nothing that is REALLY dominate over the other. So there is will be somthing to take down the armys of minions from necros but then there is be somthing to take care of people who are killing the army killers... and im gonna stop befor i confuse everyone and myself. but i hope u get the picture.

First off we brought up the grammatical and links becuase the admins of this site brought it up as an issue to us , as you can see. So we were merely trying to help you not get your post closed. As they will close them for being hard to comprehend for most people coming to this site. I don't think anyone was trying to criticize you personally for what I recall of it.

Secondly there are a number of guides as well as this forum that could help you...

-New Player Center
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/new-pla...nter-id227.php

-Road to level 10-Leveling tips
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...-10-id1195.php

-Some Pre-Searing Ascalon tips
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...lon-id1264.php

-Regarding Level 20
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=2561

-Regarding Builds-You'll find alot about the 3 professions you asked about
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/f...splay.php?f=17

Please understand the links are to help you get used to GuildWars' thinking and help you design the best character for you, for what you want to do and how you play. There is no best character, or best build, not even a best weapon or best armour. It's really a focus on skill sets.

It has been said Ranger/monk is one of the better soloists going out with a monk henchman.

Lastly the "trading house" idea has been discussed and we hear something is in the works but haven't seen an auction house or anything like that.

I hope this was helpful.

it takes approximately 48 hours to get to the level cap of 20 in Guild Wars. fortunatly, hardly anything is related to level. most of the stuff to do is endgame, or so they call it.

Ranger/Mesmer is fun, it's worth a try. (my favorite, but it's a bias oppinion)

If leveling to max in a short time is a problem, you might have problems with Guild Wars. As the quote above shows it doesnt take very long at all to get to max level. So if you think the leveling gives a game "longevity"(which is your opinion, not gonna argue it) and that is what you are looking for, you wont find any "longevity" in GW.

seems like the general opinion is a couple say monk..1 messmer and 1 necro for the secondary. I have been leaning more and more towards monk or necro. It's my understanding from reading the necro skills that i can leech (syphon?) hp from monsters(enemies) with some necro skills. Also a big plus to a necro would be having the minions..so:

how useful are these minions? (like can they keep up with you, how much control do u have over what they attack, can they actually tank)

how common are undead? (do u need to kill undead to raise a corpse or can u raise ne humaniod u kill?)

I can see syphoning hp from mobs very useful, as long as i can limit melee (toe to toe combat). Also is it possible to have a pet and summon undead minions?

last but not least i never asked for the build, best build, ideal build...simply what secondary (and its set of skills) would be most useful for my situation (solo/small group). I firmly believe that people should experiment and try things on there own, i am not suggesting that advice is a bad thing, just that asking some one to do something for you is. In other words asking for general or even semi general questions like i am doin i feel is whats great about forums. However i hate when some one says im building a(as an example): ranger/necro..what skills, atributes, items should i have...thats just lazy.

well thats about all i can think of, oo thank you to whomever moved my second post to this and re-opened it.

First there is a big difference between the PvE (missions) and PvP (head to head combat) aspects of the game. A character that excells in PvE may have no place in PvP.

However, you have to play the PvE side to develop a character capable of competing in PvP play. There are level 10 and under arenas, and there are still plenty of things to do as you level your character up, but I'm of the opinion that PvP is where the serious competition begins.

With that in mind, there are a few characters that I think excell at the PvE side of play:
Elementalists: Area of Effect attacks are very effective against AI enemies that generally attack you in small groups and will stay in a tight AOE.
Warriors: A huge porton of monster attacks are physical, and warrior armor is the best at absorbing those attacks. You have the best tanking ability and can do a lot of damage to single targets, quickly.
Monks: A good healer can make every mission in the game go from very hard to very doable. Monks have trouble doing any significant damage of their own, however...
Death Necros: Minions can be summoned from any corpse. Corpses are left behind by most enemies and allies when they die. Undead (skeletal rangers, skeleton mesmers, etc...) don't leave corpses. The trick is getting your first minion up, after that you get a snowball effect.

Mesmer primaries shine when shutting down 1 or 2 spellcaster enemies. Generally speaking they struggle against the melee-heavy groups of enemies that you find in PvE, so they don't have much of a chance to shine til you bring them to a PvP arena.

Rangers are a bit mixed- they have good armor, and can do good damage, can use interrupts, and can do some AOE damage...but they're not as amazing at PvE as that might lead you to believe. Early on they can't make any use of their primary attribute, expertise, and that is what turns the ranger into a powerhouse later on. So they have to suffer with bow attacks that cost too much energy, because they are balanced for a level 20 ranger with 9, 13, or 14 expertise, instead of the 4 or 5 you might be able to afford when you're at level 7. Don't get me wrong, rangers can function very well in PvE, but they don't have as easy a time as Warriors, Elementalists, or Monks do, IMO.

---------
As for what to combine a ranger with, for PVE play:
You can hardly ever go wrong with a monk secondary in PvE. Having another character capable of casting Restore Life will very often be the difference between your group surviving to finish a mission or having to restart it over again.
Forget summoning minions if you're not a necro primary character. Death Necros (minionators) are a niche build that is the only way to really take advantage of the necro primary attribute, Soul Reaping. It requires a few skills to work really well, and a lot of energy, and as a secondary necro you'll find it hard, if not impossible to manage.

Curses like Shadow of Fear will see a lot of use in PVE because they shut down the melee groups you'll be facing.

My last bit of advice is to try as many of the primary characters as you can this weekend. The starter skills can be misleading of how the profession plays later on, but there just aren't any other options available at the moment.

great info u pretty much answered most of my questions...its good to know that a necro secondary for minions is not as great as it sounds. i will most likely try with a monk or mesmer.

since i will not really benifit in the way i had hoped with a necro secondary would getting a pet and goin in that direction be good for PvE?

i have heard the pet is pretty much lame at this stage, but then again maybe im wrong. in either case having some kind of tank along would make a rangers life so much easier i assume.

well i dunno how quickly i can lvl in 3 days, but ill try to get as high as possible so i know if i like the character.

and my idea was to use this guy to PvE and farm items until i feel like "converting" him to PvP. from what i read u can re-do your character skills and atributes (and even secondary profession?), so then this idea would be feasable?

well ty for info ttyl guys
