How did you spend your very first BWE?
Roken
Ill be happy to say that the next BWE is 3 days away! Though, I have sadly not played in a BWE yet , but... I will be playing in the BWE this Friday! I just upgraded my integrated graphics card to a nVIDIA GeForce FX 5500, and buaght another 512 stick of RAM (768 total), so Im ready to roll and can't wait for Friday.
I plan on spending my very first BWE experimenting with tons of class builds, then explore and raise a few levels. In saying that, how did you spend your very first BWE?

I entered the first BWE I played sometime mid to late last year. I heard about Guild Wars on another site and thought I would check it out. I was just comming from a 6 year run in UO and another 2 year run in Shadowbane so I was already conditioned as to what to expect from any MMORPG. I figured with no monthly fee and only 20 levels to get to max the game was going to be devoid of any decent playability. I got my preorder for $5 at best buy and when the BWE started I didnt even try it out until day 2. After jumping in the game and haphazardly creating a guy my initial impression was "Hmm, graphics are shockingly good for no monthly fee and the music sounds like something I would expect from a LOTR movie score ... how can this be?" then I ran around and did the short tutorial adventure that the old BWE's made you do before you got to seared Asclon. After I started to explore around in the first explorable area I found myself constantly sight seeing, something I had never done in any other game that I palyed fully or beta tested. The level of quality in the cosmetics of the game were really high for a no monthly fee game, wtf I was confused.
Then it happened, after exploring around and doing a few missions I was around level 5 or so and I stumbled apon the low level PvP arena. I thought the idea was pretty cool but fully expected the PvP experience to be shallow and not much fun, ya know no monthly fee and max level is 20 and all. I never did any more missions or exploring after that point, the PvP was so much fun and immedeately I saw that my actual skill as a gamer made more of a difference than the level of my toon. I was quite amazed at how much fun the PvP was at the low levels. My eyes were opened, the myth was broken.

My first BWE was mostly spent wondering if all the B/S items I had were useful at all A/S and searching for a backpack!
Actually that was just the first day, once I teamed up in a party and did some exploring I had alot of fun and the seed was set...
My advice would be to not leave for the academy until you are at least 7th level, and be sure to party up it makes for much better times...

My first look at GW was in the E3 event. I, like most of the other people back then, spent my weekend looking at the scenery and the game in general, while looking like this: .

I spent the few hours I could thinking "I sure wish I had DSL so it won't take 2 hours to update my client." Then I spent 45 minutes wondering "WTW is the terrain?" I spent a few more minutes in between those 45 minutes wondering "What just killed me?". I also spent a few moments thinking about how much timing buff combat took and 3-5 minutes is a long time to fight the same critter. I spent a few more minutes wondering what to do with the gold I picked up as I couldn't discern any shopping areas. I spent a few more minutes running around looking for the "quest master" to get a quest. The one I got was along the lines of "defent the planet against the invading evil." After pondering about the words of wisdom from the quest giver I went out and fought some more critters for 3-4 minutes each until the wife got mad and told me to shut it off and eat dinner with her. So I did.
Reflecting back I realized that despite the really messed up terrain, mind boggling quests, and indiscernable monsters I had a good time playing. I also realized that necro's aren't the most fun to solo with with that particular BTW (#2 or 3, I think). I got to busy to BTW again, but GW was fun to play. If my paycheck isn't gobbled up before the game comes out, I might actually buy the pre-order I have. Who knows maybe I will be staring down some DSL/cable modem lines by then.
GW was fun because of the game play, for those who didn't surmise from my experience. The graphics were of no use to me, so I played using the mini-map and model/people clues. I had more fun playing than DOAC, I must say.

I spent several hours in pre-searing Ascalon on Friday doing many quests and entered the Academy that night with my necro. I spent most of Saturday in the Arena doing PvP with a new warrior I created after I had so much fun with PvP entering the Academy. Monks are too rare in the Ascalon Arena.
The rest of Saturday, I completed the Defending the Wall cooperative quest. On Sunday, I lucked out and found a team of three friends shouting to my whole precinct of Ascalon City about needing a warrior to make the epic journey to the mythical land of Lion's Arch and we spent that entire day with at least the four of us staying in team all day to traverse the distance on foot. We made it to Lion's Arch with a little over an hour to spare before the weekend ended. That was great luck and a great journey for an introduction to the PvE side of the game.

Like Arcala, my first event was the E34E. I spent the weekend doing missions and had no idea there was PvP in. When I go to tombs, we got smoked in the staging area twice, so I thought it was a "get zerged" at mission, so I played Arena for the rest of the weekend with a Me/N debuffer. I played an Ele most of the weekend.

My first BWE was THE first BWE! There was no pre-searing, you talked to some guy who gave you a weapon killed a few things along the way then went to Lyon's Arch. One hench helps you as you get near Lyon's Arch he'd appear.
Then I missioned from Lyon's Arch to riverside from there. We all started at level 15 and the mob spaws were 1 or 2 here or there, you could solo without henchies then. The seaboard used to connect through lyons arch, you didn't even have to go out the north kyrta province gate.
Oh yea, joined a guild when couldn't get a team to go from riverside (the wilds) I think it was then, never been good with names. Guild wanted to PVP so I did 2 of those won 1-lost 1. Have no idea who we were playing, either, was on 56k then too!
Of course the last 4 hours before it's over ( ) learned, by looking at the menus, I could adjust my attributes. Roflmao hadn't adjusted a single one, didn't need to it was so easy then.
Also had the best armour, best everything, level 20, etc. Drops were really generous, all items you bought were 1 gold although you usually were lucky to get 1 gold from a monster kill. hahahaa
Ended the beta exploring out of riverside with someone else as we were both about to die to a couple of ettns. I don't remember if we left or it just disconnected.
What's funny is I was ready to buy it then! To me this game has been ready for a while, but not for the power gamers, just for the rest of us as it was. Each BWE it is more challenging though so I am glad they took the time. The graphics and how the control interface works had me sold the moment I used it. To me the whole left and right hand being basically on separate tasks is a perfect synergy. Now the chat interface and needing to press return even after you click the chat tab with the mouse....that needs fixin.... to me it is out of flow.

During My First BWE I was ....
- looking around at the beautiful scenery while shouting to my friends on TeamSpeak-Server to join me asap
- getting stuck at the stairs and reading at the same time you can fill in a bugreport They actually thank you for filing those... (my last 3 games were so buggy, I'm not used to companies fixing them)
- doing the FedEx-quests in Pre-sear was fun and a nice way to get acquainted with the UI / Maps / etc.
- fighting in the arena and was surprised to see I could actually lvl there by winning
- trying to walk from Ascalon to Lion's Gate and got stuck at some pyramides. My team tried to kill all the charr on it (- 65% DP!!) and found out we just needed to walk AROUND them.
- still wondering about the Trading-system and never got to know the actual market prices for my items
BWE: 10 packs of sigarettes, 10 liters of Mineral Water, 2 bottles of vodka, one normal dinner and some bread, 10 hours of sleep (two nights ) and lots of fun

My first BWE (I suppose its a BWE) was the E3 thing back in 2004. Couldnt mix classes yet, had 1 area and 1 map for PVP. Everyone was locked at lvl 15. That was my only BWE, im tryin this one to see how much the games changed, and to determine whether or not ill buy it.

My first beta weekend was the world preview event, I remeber having a great deal of fun yet not knowing what the heck anything did and i didnt use many of the skills. I remeber thinking how beautifull the game was. Of course, the highlight of the weekend was doing missions with my Girlfriend. I remeber the game wasnt as complete as it was now and there was a great deal of "under construciton" item and skills.

My first time on GW was in the E3 event I spent all time in the first exploreable area and doing missions, with my Ele ^^
I was really entusiastic about the game: graphic, gameplay, characters etc ...awesome!

THe MArch BWE being my first MMO game, I was running around kinda akwardly trying to get my bearings and understand the controls.
I found it worth mytime to pick out one main profession and try out ALL the secondary professions to see what fit my playing style.
I enjoyed running around and exploring the world. I even took time to just sit and admire the beauty of the land.
I didnt hang out much in towns. I am still learning alot about how this game works and what to do. My goal for this upcoming BWE is to make it to Lions Arch and see if I can check out the Guild Halls first hand.

I first played in the E34E event with my hammer warrior and my old guild. It was a blast as I abused what Saus Rex calls "Knockdown Lockdown" to keep everyone on their rumps.

First beta I played in was the WPE, I was using a Ranger/ Warrior and I played mostly PvE missions and in the gladiator's arena and learned the basics of the game. It was during the month between the November beta and the December beta that I started to learn the more complicated aspects of strategy and stuff.

Honestly, I dont agree with the whole system they set up. Whynot just set up a Open Beta and keep the servers up 24/7? Although the BWE really draws people in, you just cant wait till the next one. They tease you, :P

During the Feb BWE I had a tendency to NOT do the things I should've done. For instance; getting my character to level 7 before realizing he was not doing so hot in combat because I hadn't taken the time to assign his attributes. (After that foible,..I spent about 30 mins just looking through the User Interfacing to "acquaint" myself with the various functions and prevent me from doing any further "character suicides". Then I just explored to heart's content, never really accomplishing anything.
(edit for below) ok ok... maybe I did have a "bit of fun".

I played a Ranger and did the first lot of missions. Was just off Lions Arch when I switched chars to a Necro, and spent the rest of the weekend completely wasting time trying to play with a pure Necro, either solo-ing or going with Henchman.

My first BWE was the February Event, and I spent most of it simply wandering around and trying to catch my bearings as to what I was supposed to do. I never ended up getting to far in the game (I was only just getting to Nolani Academy before the game ended and was Level 8), but the two things that I will always remember will be:
1) I spent a good three hours trying to find out where to get my Monk secondary from, only to find it in 10 minutes once I started playing the March BWE, and
2) I wondered for most of the event why my damage was so low, even with the decent bow I had. The solution: USE MY ATTRIBUTE POINTS AND RAISE MY LEVELS!! Didn't figure that one out until a few days after the event ended.
Yeah, I was a newb back then, but things have improved significantly for me since then. It took me only a few hours to get to Nolani Academy in the March Event, while it took me the entire three days to get there in the February event. I'm looking to hit Level 20 this next event, since right now I'm at The Wilds with a Level 14 Ranger/Monk; might need to spend at most 2 days to reach 20 you think?

My First BWE was the Feb one. I spent most of the first and half of the second day in pre-searing Ascalon. I went to all the little quest and tryed all the secondary professions till I found one I liked, at the time I was a Ranger/ele. Then I want to the acadame. The mission was hard but I stuck close to my fighters and got throught on the first try(later on I would need to repeat the mission with other chars.) Then the Searing!!!! I was In shock I was like what happened to all the pretty flowers and all the great looking country side. It was all so sad Then I wandered a round killing things till I found a party. I palyed the warn the Wall quest and was hooked. I loved the cut-seen staring my character . The last day I payed a little more then I spent the last few hours partying in town with all the other naked fools At 3:10am EST Monday morning I went to bed

I spent the E34E event as an Elementalist, hunting down stone elementals, collecting stuff, marveling at how a tower in the distance that was just a drawing suddenly became a model as I got closer, trying to explore further and getting killed by scorpion things, respawning in a place I'd never been before and getting killed again by a poisonous swamp monster thing, dying my clothes pink, taking off my clothes and marveling at my boxer shorts.
I tried playing a mission too but got killed quite a lot. It was fun though. I think I tried PvP too but my team lost almost straight away.
I'm looking forward to seeing all the changed that have occured since back then.

Demon, run up to your local Gamestop or EB. Ask for the "Pre-Order Package". They'll give you what you need right then and there for 1-5$, and they'll reserve the game for you. Basically pre-ordering, although I dont see it that way. :P
Dont do it online, or the pre-order box may arrive late, which carries your CD Key for the BWE.

My first BWE was in the autumn of 2004, I *think* in October (it was the WPE event).
It's quite funny, because a friend (Chiao The Devout) got me into Guild Wars but I didn't instantly find it appealing. In fact, I didn't like the look of it at first as I had never played Diablo or anything like that. Back in 2004, I was obsessed with WoW and got caught up in the hysteria with the run up to that game.
Anyway, to get back on topic. My first BWE was spent TRYING to understand how to play the game. With no instructions, no guides or anything like that - it was a steep learning curve, but it was fun, and I got into it. Back then they had 'skill crafters' and rings and all that type of thing so it was *fairly* easy to acquire most of the skills you wanted on a temporary basis from the skill crafters.
I loved the graphics of the game which I think are superior to almost all of the other similar types of game on the market at the moment.
One of the things I like most about the game is that its aim isn't to reward time spent playing, but instead to reward skill and team work.
If this is your first ever BWE I think you're in for a treat! Enjoy it.

I started at the WPE, not a BWE
I was first marveling at the beautiful graphics in the short tutorial they had back then (instead of Green Ascalon). The tutorial was easy to play and learn the controls.
Then I was put into Ascalon City from a place that looked like the Gates of Kryta(!). I was totally lost in the Big City. Which is why I still take the time to answer question from newbies in the city, I remember the feeling. But since then a guide has been added, and the two most complicated things, charms and rings, have been removed.
I then did missions and a bit of exploration, with other just as confused

I started playing at the first BWE in November. (I missed the WPE in October ) This was before they implemented the Pre-searing Ascalon as a training area, I spent my time exploring, doing a couple of quests and figuring out the controls. I found getting used to the camera movement a bit weird, I kept wanting to move it Dungeon Seige style where you just move to the edge of the screen and it shifts. It kept bugging me that I forgot to hold down the mouse key. I got over it!

My first taste of GuildWars was last year, during the E34E event. A friend had mentioned it so I decided to check it out. Way back then there weren't any guides and walkthroughs, you just had to dive in!
It was totally awesome even way back then...though the system was geared around skillgems it was an excellent opportunity to dive in for 3 days of complete immersion. I was particularly impressed with all the visuals, spell effects and environments along with the sounds.
The main thing that struck me though was the fact that it was very much team orientated and had real depth in cooperative play. I've been hooked ever since...
