Hello, was looking for some advise from more experienced GW players on builds. Me and my gf will always play together and i want to be warrior and she wanst to be monk, thats how far we got with our char plans, what i really need help with is the secondary proffessons and maybe builds that would work well for us. One thing to note she isnt very experienced in mmorpgs so her monk must be fairly simple to play, my war can get as complicated as it needs =)
Thank You.
Help this GW Noob...

personally, i would think that the monk would be harder to play than the warrior..

Maybe, but she only plays healers so that probably wont change, we'll have to get simplest to play monk build possible i geuss =)

Your GF plays the healing class, which in every MMORPG, is one of the most complex, despite the fact she doesent like complex characters. You guys need to switch roles, or maybe she'll like a Ranger primary, and monk secondary.

Nah Cleric in Eq was just Complete heal spam and buffs, and in Wow she plays holy priest also just heal/buff, she doesnt like to meele or cc much, tank has to keep agro, lead groups a lot of the time, pull, get mobs of casters stuff like that so not sure about wow but tank is more complecated in most other mmorpgs.

i did search but i did not find any discussion or advise on Duo builds, most are just single char builds or full group builds. So if you can find something else please link em here =)
Thnx =)

I have to agree with Talizar, in a lot of MMORPG's the healer is fairly simplistic. Buff...heal, heal, heal, heal.....watch team go running off into next fight while you are out of mana. It is definitely more complex in GW, which makes me a very happy monk. I, like your gf, do not enjoy playing melee characters for the most part.
There are a lot of monk builds posted in these forums. I think for a new healer coming into the game, she may want to try an Elem/Mo (again, many builds posted for this). There is some good damage, as well as the capability of being a very good monk build. As she gets comfortable with some of the game play and skills, she could add in more monk skills than elem. skills. This is a fun build for PvE. I have one that I use to solo missions.
Good luck to you, and I hope you both have a great time this weekend. Feel free to message me in game.

If i am a War/monk and she is a monk/something will my secondary monk be waisted cause she will have all those abilities already in her primary?

Okay, so are you looking for which combo would be better for PvE strictly as a duo to compliment each other, or which two would be best when added to a group for PvE, PvP, GvG? What will you two being doing the most of?

i never played so i am not sure how game works but from what i understand we will probably duo most of the Pve stuff and join bigger groups for pvp stuff, not sure if there are 2 on 2 battles but if there is we'd be doing that too =)
What we are lookign for is for her to be a healer who is able to defend herself well and good survivability, while me being heavy dmg dealer in pvp and tank in pve.

I think you have seen quite a few builds by now. I have not played a warrior, so I would defer to others on that build. I do play with a warrior very frequently, and we often team together for PvP and PvE. With that said, I have 4 different monk builds at my disposal. For PvE, if we are duo-ing lower to mid levels I use my ele/mo. Lots of energy, lots of damage, good healing, and I think the Monk primary of divine favor is a bit wasted in this type of PvE. Just my opinion though. For a big group where my job is healing. I use my monk primary with zero damage skills.
As I said before, I am always a healer, so I understand your gf's attachment to being a monk primary. She should know the basic difference between the two is that a Mo/El would have the ability to put attributes into Divine Favor which grants a healing bonus to spells. The Elem/Mo has access to the attribute of energy storage, which increases the amount of energy you start with. All skills will be accessible to both builds (except Divine favor and energy storage skills).
I would suggest creating several builds over the course of the weekend. The pre-made PvP option is great for this. 4v4 would be a good place to experiment, but as of last BWE you wouldn't be able to choose to be in the same group.
If she decides to go with a Primary monk, the three attribute healer that was linked above is a good start, and will familiarize her with three basic focus areas for monks...healing, protection, and divine favor. There is also smiting for damage. Have fun experimenting with the builds and finding what works well and is fun for you. I don't know anyone who has the same build they started with the first BWE.

I've never played in any BWEs, but I know some information about the game and I was thinking about being a Warrior/Monk so that I can heal myself in battle and provide our future guilds main Monk w/ some back up. Would this be a good combo to use?

You will see that most warriors walking around in W/Mo fashion. If you want to play Warrior and you are just starting the game I personally think that is one of the best warrior builds to start with. Especially when u are not familiar with the game. I do think that later on when u start playing PvP and GvG in a trusted group you can trust the monks in the team and build another warrior like W/Me or W/El, it is useless when the W/Mo and the monk heal at the same time.
But i have to say i disagree with the notion that warrior is easier to play then monk. In PvP and GvG this is maybe true, but i guess that he and his girlfriend are going to play PvE first, and in that setting, monk is more easier to play with. As it was mentioned before. Stand behind the group, keep an eye on the health bars and let the healing and buffing spam begin.
Now you question as to the second char for the monk. A combo i have personally played with is Mo/Me. My monk was a full healer/remover, the Mesmer skills involved stealing energy from the enemy and using Echo to be able to double spam fast recharging and fast casting healing spells. As you mentioned before she doesnt really want to get into the damaging/fighting part of the game, so i think with the mesmer skills as backup for energy stealing and such it would be a nice combo for your GF. and remember you dont have to use your secondary chars abilities at all. My fire elem/me only has elementalist skills atm (although i am using Echo now and then to spam meteor shower ) good luck and enjoy this beta.

well, for a start later on in the game you won't be walking through the missions as just the two of you - you will die (unless you take henchmen - AI controlled characters). And as for the complexities of each class - Guild Wars classes have A LOT of skills. its fairly easy to build a reasonable warrior build for PvE, but Monks are a little more awkward. The best thing for a PvE monk to do is put lots of divine favour points in, lots of Healing, and go for all the nice healing spells you can get your hands on.
For the warrior, take a couple of protection prayers or smiting prayers and you have a totally different style of monk and so you won't overlap skills-wise.
Have fun, and enjoy guildwars. You'll quickly pick up the gaming style (it's different from most MMORPGS) and you'll quickly learn how to refine your characters (one BWE and you'll be a pro)
