How is GW for PvE?
fezz47
Hey all. Not sure if this is the place to post this but wasn't sure where to put it.
I am very new to MMORPG's. The only one I've played is Asheron's Call 2 for a couple of months and just cancelled my subscription today. I found that game not very newbie friendly and although a lot of fun, just had a hard time finding players at my level, so I'm not bashing that game. Just not enough people at my level playing.
I've been checking out a lot of these type games and this one looks good to me, (especially no monthly fee!), except from all I've heard about it, it's more for PvP, which I'm not really into. Can you play just PvE and still enjoy it, or is the game basically over for PvE once you reach level 20?
Also, can you configure the game so it plays more like an FPS as far as moving around etc, as I'm more used to that type of genre?
Any replys greatly appreciated.

I play PvE only...it's DEFINATELY worth the 50 bucks. By the time you reach lvl 20 you still have a good deal of game left to play.

PVE already worth the $50 bucks IMO. And you can configure the keys as well as the interface. Basically I made it so that minimal mouse clicks are needed for the game, and no mouse clicks at all in battle.

there are 25 missions (non pvp) to start
there are 60-70 explorable areas (non pvp, not small) to start with additional content to be added by streaming in (2 big areas are scheduled to be added this summer)
i play pvp only and am having fun
do not expect logging
mining
making things to sell to other people
no indoor areas yet just outside trading post cities
crafting is as simple as using salvage kits on drops from enemies for raw material and taking it to an NPC crafter and poof the finished product (customized to you so no trading it) is in your inventory ready to go
you wont have the big kill everything weapon or the invincible armor either
on the other hand you get rid of the
griefers
campers
gankers
loot stealers
etc
things keep getting added so who knows what it will be like in 6 months
i like it and i do not pvp at all
when i have done what i want i will put it aside until something else is added or the next chapter comes out and i will be playing it again
with no monthly fee i feel no pressure to play or lose the money from the monthly fee

Fun! Many character build's are possible, many explorable area's, many items. If your a person who like to see how fast that they can beat the game, then dont buy it. If you like a challenge, If you like to use stradegy and explore and have fun, then buy it. It ROCKS!

its better than most of those Final Fantasy RPG, and i like the huge map world. Also the quests are not the same old kill 20 monster and get something or get this person from point A to point B. So the quest constantly keep the game from gettin dull or boring. But i do have a complain about PvE is that high prices to buy anything (like Dye, Material for your weapons or armors)

PvE is certainly damn fun (at least the first time through), but if you're a serious PvEr, you may be disappointed, as it will be rather short for you. The PvE side of Guild Wars bears more resemblance to something like Knights of the Old Republic or another semi traditional RPG than Everquest/Asheron's Call, etc. in terms of progression. It's not so much as an open ended world as it is a storyline with a definite beginning, progression and ending. If you don't mind the fact tha you'll probably shelve it once you're finished with the PvE campaign (unless you want to play through with multiple characters) until the expansion comes out, I say go for it. Its as good as any other PC RPG if not moreso in terms of value for overall playtime.
I can't see myself playing the PvE over and over for a year until the next expansion, but then again, thats what PvP is for. (And Guild Wars PvP is superior to pretty much every MMO on the market, if only for the fact that is tightly controlled and ganking is non-existent)

the pve side of it is good. meeting poepl is great. no monthly fee is the greatest. and the content is only in its preliminary stages. I my opinion the first time I played GW the world seemed, large, in reality it's not. Not yet anyways. They have left a huge and expansive option in this game. Anet has done some good developing, with great planning. It is starting from grass roots and having th option to grow with control. I say it was worth my $50 ... they add weekly updates currently and content will be added I believe on a 6 month expansion pack time frame ... starting with chapter 2 early 2006 I think. This summer there is a free streaming update with 2 large areas being added. They will be holding real tournaments for the pvp'ers to enjoy. There are so many nice attributes about this game ... and imho ... I think the balance is the best one. No win all character build over another.

Thanks for the replys guys.
I just want something I can pick up and play for a couple of hrs a day with some friendly people and have some fun. As I said, AC2 was a fun game for me, however without other people at my level I had to do a lot of stuff solo, and was constantly getting killed which kind of blows no matter what game you're playing.
I think I'm going to pick the game up later tonite. I just hope there are some other fools like myself that don't know much about the game or genre, cause most of the people in the other game were so far above me in level that I hated asking questions in game, for fear of sounding stupid. If GW is as newbie friendly as the reviews say, I should be in for a good time!
Appreciate all the help.
BTW; If it's anything like KOTOR that will make me very happy in itself as that was one of my favorite RPG's.

Unless you are an Elementalist, Warrior, or Monk you may have a hard time finding groups to play with these days. It seems that for the past few weeks the only people that most groups want are nukers, tanks & healers. You will feel like a red-headed stepchild if you are not one of those 3 builds. And if you want to play a smiting monk - you'll really feel like an outcast because people will invite you all the time to thier groups and then chide you and ridicule you when you tell them you are not a healer but a fighter instead. Some can get quite nasty - so learn to farm if you want to play a smiting monk because you'll be alone, alot. Except that most farming locations have now been nerfed by Anet so you may find it rather difficult to do that as well.
Find some good friends to play with and stick with them...most PUG (pick up groups) I have found recently are worthless. No one wants to work together to finish missions and since you can't remove anyone from a mission once you start, some people will join your group and then just go AFK till you finish the mission. They expect you to do all the work for them.
Other than all that - it can be fun.

I have 3 PvE characters: A Necromancer, a Mesmer and a Ranger. I have no idea what the above poster is talking about, I can start a group for any mission and fill it up. I'll admit that the mesemr can be a challenge to play in PvE - especially with henchmen.
Yes, there are people who drop partway through missions, and you get jerks, but it is way better than putting up with PKs and griefers and so on. Instances are good, you can always just meet everyone back in town and exclude the griefer from your party.
I enjoy PvE, and it trains up many of the skills you need for PvP as you go.
