Do people just make up names?
d4nowar
Seriously.
Over the months of Guild Wars I've noticed that people can't seem to get the names of missions and outposts right. At first, I thought, "Oh well its still the beginning of the game, they will learn." But they still do it. They might say it one time on accident, but I'm talking about the people that know part of it and never bother to even TRY to remember what the next part of it is.
Is it that hard to remember the names of the missions or outposts? It seems that they just make up things that sound right.
The most common one I see is "Elona's Reach (Elona Reach)" and I understand that to some point. I think maybe people think it is "Epona's Reach" and they are remembering the days of Zelda, but that's just pointless.
I also see the crazy ones that have half of it right, but then the other half is bogus.
Ventari's Dell (Ventari's Refuge)
Dragon Eye (Dragon's Lair)
Lion's Gate (Lion's Arch)
I've seen more but those are the ones I remember off of the top of my head.
How hard is it to remember a few simple names of towns and outposts? What goes through peoples' heads when they try to remember these?
"Lets see... I know it had the word dragon in it... hmm... dragons have eyes! Dragon Eye!"
"Ventari... uhhh... err...*looks around room for object*.. Ventari's Dell!"
I may be alone here but whenever people say those I cringe a little.
I can already predict some of the responses I am going to get, "Jeez no one's perfect its not like you don't mess up ever." and "Sometimes I can't remember every word of it, but I really do know it!" If you want to post either of those, do it in your head. I already know.

No I totally agree; my Ragner was over in the Sardelan Sanctimonium after coming from pre-searing Ascathon and these guys were talking about how they were going to go to the Delivery Seabord! It's not Delivery, it's DELISSIO!

Just trying to avoid some of the larger cliches in the game...
I mean Dragons Lair - devs put a lot of thought into that name. Would have been funnier if we had a character in the background called Dirk..

Actually, Ventari's Refuge was originally Ventari's Dell before Release. In fact, when you talk to Ventari himself during a Quest Councillor Vaylor gives you, he says something along the lines of "Welcome to the Dell." at the beginning of his speech.
I freely admit, I used to make the mistake of thinking "Lion's Gate" all the time myself at first. This is a weird sort of conditioning though, as Lion's Gate is a large film company, so essentially, people are used to hearing the two words together.
Dragon's Eye is another common combination/phrase/place or object name in RPGs/etc., so I can easily see people slipping and saying that as well.
I think it's totally unconscious. It's more bothersome to watch the complete inability of about 50% of Lion's Arch in spelling 'Galrath'.

Divinitys Creature
Here is some insight: During most of the betas, Ventari's Refuge was called Ventari's Dell, and there never used to be a centaur like creature called Ventari hanging out there like there is now IIRC. I always thought "if it's Ventari's Dell then where the hell is he" and put it down to a historical name.
I'm not too sure about the next one. Lion's Gate. I think during the WPE (World Preview Event) it was called that. There was no Ascalon. You did a 30 second tutorial where you talked to two npcs and you graduated from training by walking into Lion's Gate. The first or second Beta Weekend Event, BWE, was when they renamed it to Lion's Arch. I'm, not too sure but I remember talking to people about Lion's Gate in game and they were saying "you mean Lion's Arch" and I looked at the map and thought I just had it wrong from the beginning! Since I'm not sure, maybe I was!
Dragon Eye - WTF! The desert was not open during the BWEs apart from Tombs, which you got to after beating Sanctum Cay IIRC. I don't think the ship cutscene was there either? You could get there with your PVP char of course. The desert missions were available in the Korean Beta, maybe it was called Dragon Eye then or someone did a bad translation. Did you meet people calling it Dragon Eye in the international districts?
Epona's reach - LOL it is Elona's Reach as you know. Maybe that was just a typo because p and l are close to each other on the keyboard, and when one person spells something wrong and people read it and don't know better they make the same mistake?
EDIT - i started typing this and thought it would be the first reply but you all beat me to it!

i think it's pretty hilarious when some people misspelled the town names. but you still get the picture of what they are talking about. so it's no biggy for me.

I stand corrected on Ventari's Dell/Refuge.
Zexion
Maybe it's the translation to different languages.
Maybe Lion's Arch is (Das) Tor des Leues in German, which translates directly to Lion's Gate.
Might just be.

Those don't bother me much... but when someone say they need a sigil but instead they mean the signet, that bothers me.
In pre-searing: "can someone party with me to get the sigil?" LOL
EDIT: I know sometimes noobs mix them up when they start to see people talking about sigils.

But yeah it can get coonfusing when you're sitting in bacon's perch and people are asked to be run to dragon's forge and you'd rather go to guts of kruta.....or when you are in druid's ascend trying to get to bloddstone falls by way of ventari's quarrel, and get lost in Ettin's top, because you takea wrong turn in dry back...
Spooky
Lion's Gate? Maybe that's where I need to go to find Steal Ingots and Dies.
Actually, like Ventari's, Lion's Arch is another one that has had a history of many, many name changes. You can usually tell how long someone has been involved with/known about Guild Wars by what they refer to the city as. There are still some people who adamantly cling to the name Hakewood, and maybe even a few that might remember it as Siren's Cove.

I was with my nicropanther once - just spoke to Sir Tiedust , and the next thing i knew, i was in Salami Academy, looking for a group to go to Bak's Yend. I kinda got stuck though trying to continue to Deacon's Lurch.

I mess up a lot of the names too. Now that I've been through the game, it's mostly just spellings. Elona's Reach came out because it just sounds right, Elona sounds like a name so it sounds like it should be possessive. Bacon Perch comes out cuz I'm hungry
edit: and as a further testiment to how easy it is to screw up the names... I just now noticed that Epinephrine was taking the piss and screwed up loads of names on purpose. The quote and comment left in for fun and to prove the point
edit 2: and it frustrates me greatly when I see people spamming to buy or sell steel and iron ignots...
Divinitys Creature
I remember someone talking about Hakewood and not knowing where it was
Siren's Cove? This must all be pre-WPE stuff.

Little Thom versus Little Thorn is still a huge one, I think it's little ThoM but I'm really not entirely sure.
Mystical
The reason I get messed up between "Elona" and "Elona's" is because there are already so many apostrophe "s"es in the game! So Elona Reach sounds just so cut-off to me I end up thinking it's wrong and add the extra 's.

1- "that little thoM has been a pain in my backside..." (a thoRN in our side)
2- r n looks very similar to m
a very simple mistake made through our familiarity with the idiom and letter similarities.

On this very site even. Where do you find Arcane Conundrum? Why, this man has it:

Dude, I was sitting in Droknar's Forge actually in a group getting ready to make a run to Roknar's Forge (only respite I have in my idiocy was I thought it was Camp Rankor) when someone told us we were there. I had to go to the forums to make sure. Not a great moment.

But who cares about spelling anyway?
If somebody sais Lion's Gate instead of Lion's Arch or whatever it's important to understand what the other person means.
If you can do that, spelling is no longer that important.

Irregardless, who really cares? I mean, its onlee englysh? Write?
