No, there is no time of day in Guild Wars.

Hmm, that's kind of a pity, that's something I would like to see, maybe even in the form of night maps as opposed to a realtime daylight change.

Really? Dang. That was probably one of the coolest features of WoW. The first time I realized night and day were based on real time I felt pretty dumb. I had been playing in the Shimmering Flats (it's a desert place) for 3 hours and the moon was slowly moving across the sky. I asked about it in general chat and got the friendly "j00r n00blet!" response.

Places looked really different in the night and in the day. I hope with all the dynamic lighting that's going on in this game they'll put in day and night.

The time of day in Guild Wars depends on where you are. Since Guild Wars isn't an MMORPG, it doesn't make much sense for there to be global day/night cycles. For some people, it's the morning of the day the Searing came, for others, it's the night they snuck through Riverside Province to steal the Scepter of Orr. Since when you are depends on where you are in the story, and certain things have to occur at certain times (you would hardly sneak through Riverside during the day), a day/night cycle tied to real world clocks just wouldn't make any sense either.

So there is Day and Night then? Not a global cycle, but different times of day for different missions?

Ah, cool. This is what I was hoping for. Good to hear.

Yes, it's all about where you are. On some maps, it even gets dark and becomes night gradually as you travel, but it has entirely to do with where you are on the map. Guild Wars has a very strong storyline that you can play through, complete with cut scenes, etc. so day and night need to correspond correctly to where you are in the story. If a certain mission required you to do something at night and you had to wait for night, that would defeat part of Guild Wars' purpose, which is to eliminate a lot of the tedium of typical mmorpg's.

I do think it would be cool if guilds could choose to set their Guild Hall maps to day or night. But that's just one of those "I wish" things.

Does it then get light again if you retrace your footsteps? That would be odd...

The one time I experienced this was in an explorable area (I think it was in Kryta) at the edge of some forest, and it actually did go back and forth. If I approached the forest, it would begin to get dark, but would lighten again if I moved away from it. Yes, it was a little odd. I wasn't in a mission, though, so maybe it's different for those? It'd be nice if, in missions, it stayed night once the change was complete, even if you went back.

Really? I think it does. A day/night cycle wouldn't work in this game, but if there were no day or night at all I'd consider that a huge oversight unless there were some explanation in the story as to why it's always Daytime or Nighttime in Tyria.

That would be a very nice addition.

As for your dark/light experiance while walking towards the woods, I would guess that the lighting was more to set the mood for the forest as opposed to representing night and day time. Then again I could be horribly wrong.

I think the lighting and the time of day would greatly effect a game like GW and when elements like lighting are not properly addressed it reflects very poorly on a game in my opinion.

Could be, but I highly doubt it. It was a few betas ago, but I'm pretty sure I remember stars coming out, and night-time sound effects before I actually entered the forest. Maybe someone who knows of the place I'm talking about and has been there more recently can say.

Stars and night time sounds seem like a pretty good indication. While the ability to make the sun go up and down is humorus I prefer it over having no daylight changes at all.

This is an MMORPG...they just don't want us to know that.
