After countless hours in the HoH you'll realize you won't get anywhere without it.
Being able to talk makes things infinitely more organized then typing and drawing on the minimap.

And AFAIK, teamspeak servers are outside of GW servers, so banning rules would be under the discretion of whom ever admins the teamspeak server.

ok cool, thanks for the quick and helpful responses, i will definately try it out sometime

if you have an extremely skilled team, then TS/Vent is not necessary
if you have an mediocre - average team, then TS/Vent can give you a much-needed boost
that said, TS/Vent is always ideal to use. it's a smart thing to do.
but a great team that's not using it can still beat most teams out there that do use it IMO

I've used teamspeak since the day the game came out, and it is a godsend in my eyes. When you need to call for help, it is so much easier to say it and still fight rather than freeing even a second to type HELP! or something of the sort on a keyboard. It is easier for me and my friends and guildmates at least, to organize ourselves and shout out who to attack and such.
We're mostly PvE and I haven't had any problems running TS and my GW, you just have to set it up to fit your connection speed, and the connection of the server, if you have it on a friends computer that is.

Teamspeak and Ventrillo make me feel like I'm playing CS, not Guild Wars. :/

Voice chat isn't a necessity, unless you're looking at organized / high level competition. If you play with a group that knows how to use voice chat to its fullest potential, the difference that it makes is rather striking.
Consider the role of a Monk, for example. During the course of PvP, the Monk needs to keep an eye on the health and conditions of not only themselves, but that of their entire team, while keeping track of everything else that's going on screen. If you focus solely on the little red bars, you may fail to notice "Oh, hey, i'm standing in a Meteor Shower. Go me." With all of this information coming in left and right, how do you prioritize things like a condition removal? You need everyone to click-call their hexes, decide which is the most severe based on who has it, and then act. It's more daunting in practice than it is in text. Whereas with Voice Chat, someone can say "Backfire on Mrs. Butterworth The Monk!" and you won't need to think about "Hey, that's probably more important than getting Parasitic Bond off the Warrior..."
If nothing else, with a good group, Voice Chat makes pretty much whatever you're doing infinitely more entertaining. There are some exceptions though, such as with Agony. There's an awful lot of singing going on in their channel... for reasons I don't think i'm quite ready to fully understand just yet.

Me and my guild always use TS when it come to PvP, without it it's harder to coordinate and play as a team.

You know what? It's really not. A well-planned outing goes much smoother without voice comms.
First of all, you have an added keypress. secondly there's the lag because ultimately someone doesn't have a faster codec and it's defaulting to one of the clearer, but 200ms, codecs. These are the same individuals that run a DX voice changer plugin adding even more latency to their speech. And then the clown who leaves his mic on the whole time while using speakers instead of a headset so you hear the game played back to you, delayed. Then the OTHER clown who has his rec loop with the mixer turned up, so all system sounds are being routed to the voice comm input. It's funny the first 1000000 times, but it's really old.
Besides, when it's just a random PUG... you know what you hear the most? Whining, complaining, cursing. "left. LEFT! No hitshed your other left!"
Also take this into account - you just gave your IP to a 14 year old punk gamer kid who's playing a competitive game. If you do or say something that pisses him off, I'd pay attention to your IDS alerts. That's him portscanning you right now. :-)

I just had my first few unrated gvgs with my guild. Besides the fact that we ran decent builds and they didn't (fire eles and death necros, right), we did abysmal due to a lack of clear communication. When you are trying to give commands amidst target calling spam there's a good chance they'll miss it. We let them have the tower control for 10 minutes despite the fact that whenever they moved out they got mauled, because all my calls for the flag runner to get the flag were hidden in the rapidly scrolling chat.
Trying to setup people to scout and see if they are trying to sneak through the side paths or whatnot, is really difficult, as with catapult usage and orders to fall back and regroup or whatnot. If you have the chance, use voice com. If it's well regulated (i,e none of the 'oh no im dying heal me' rubbish) your coordination will be worlds better.

Tactics aside I love it just to hear people talking. I still use the chat a lot and the map.
It humanizes the game to hear what people sound like and you just can't beat having someone say, "I'm blind" and know right who to fix. If they tried to type it they'd be fixed before you read it.

I see the benefit of TS/Vent, as a PUG I was in made all it the way to HoH (albiet lost to Korea) whith one of the members giving out orders by Vent. Was much easier to know what to do.
My question is, do all of you have TS/Vent set to voice-activation? If not, which key do you use? Right now I have them both set to V, feels a bit ackward though.

HA!
Used to use T/S alot in BF Vietnam and NWinternight which made things much easier but haven't done so with guildwars yet.
I think I will have to use it though, I joined up with a team in Crystal desert the other night and turned on auto run as I typed a message, not looking where I was going ran right into a group of Hydras...we were doing so well up to that point.

I truely enjoy using TeamSpeak. The strategy is important as also the tactical. However, more so I like to have fun while playing, and being able to actually speak with people makes that a reality. I love to crack jokes, make fun of the monsters, and so forth. It is also a plus to have when in a PUG and only me and my close friends in that group have TS. Usually we get the idiot charging away out there and in TS we can all agree on "screw him...let him die..."
