I'd like your input on an idea i have...
Keegan
Hey guys. I have an idea to simplify the whole trading thing quite a bit. I'm a cs major, and php/mysql frontends are by far the things i enjoy coding the most. I've written lots of interfaces for various things, including message boards, frontends for varoius unix programs (like quota/user management and a frontend for bind, a current project).
Recently, i wanted to sell some items in the forums below, and not a lot has happened. I'm also on the watch for items i'dlike to purchase. However, i find the forum environment too slow and cluttered for the needs of trading and purchasing items.
What i'd like to do is to create a frontend for traders to work with. It would be php/mysql driven. It would offer a place for sellers to submit weapons, upgrades, runes, items, etc that they would like to sell. They could post minimum bids, and buyout values. Buyers could visit the site and browse by date, search for all items that do a certain thing, search for specific weapons, find the cheapest runes, etc.
I've written a few things similar to this, so it wouldnt be too much work. However, i'd like to know if anyone would use it. The interface would be clean, and easy to use, it could support bidding and notifications of sorts. Do you think you would find this useful, and would utilize it?
Thanks for your input.
Cliffsnotes for the lazy people: Want to build nifty website where people can post stuff they want to buy & sell, sort it, find what they need quickly, etc.

Shadowdaemon
that would be cool, there should also be like, a way to tell when you are going to be on too, that way it would be alot easier to actually GET what you bid on
foszor
ya thats a great idea, and many ways to expand on the idea too

I think that's what rpgtraders.net is -- they have a Guild Wars trading section on their website, with auctions running online.

I've been looking at that site, and unless i'm missing something, its not neasrly as easy to use as mine would be. For example, a user could enter certain keywords like 'staff' and 'gold' and 'max damage' and 'fire' to return all max damage gold fire staffs. Or, they could look for all bows that give health of 20 or more, etc.

It sounds like a great idea. Hurry up, I'm getting tired of salvaging Gold and Purple items just because I don't have the patience to spam the trade channel.

I see no problem in a little competition. Keeps people on there toes and things will get improved in the end.
Sounds like a good idea.

If you can make this front end better than RPG traders that would be a great thing. But it needs to be fast and have good search options. Also you need to pay attention to marketing and getting it popular. The interface has to be simple and functional. Just a few ideas

How many entries do you plan to support? How do you feel about Oracle? I understand that MySQL is open source - but. Who's going to host the bandwidth needed? There's an ISP worker somewhere within these forums. You are a. . . frontend coder? Who's going to write your engine code? At any rate, I've been hired to write a database (partial front end in ASL, entire back end in MySQL). If you want help, I'd be willing to contribute, just give me a heads up and what drivers, database and frontend you plan to use.
