What is the point of having Gold?

Ok, I keep hearing people say "Hey, that 15k looks cool!", then some wise guy will say "Yeah, but that's a waste of money!" then add some comment about how players who buy it are "n00bs" or stupid.
So I was wondering, what else is there to dump my gold on? I already have a collector weapon that is just fine for me, and I doubt the 15k ney sayers think that I should instead use the gold to buy a 300k uber weapon... because weapons / equipment don't make much of a differance in this game anyways.
So if I'm not going to use my gold on some uber weapon, why is it so wastefull and "stupid" to buy 15k? I have about 85k saved up. Should I just dump it all on Dwarven Ale and take screens? Or by 42 Fiery Dragon Swords and start spamming them on the ground in some n00b missions? That seems more 'wasteful'...

I say, if you have the gold and you want a set of 15K armor, then go for it. It's your gold, spend it as you wish.
I'm hoping Anet will add some kind of a "barber" where you can use your gold to change your hair style. I want to be able to change it once in a while.
Oh ya, you can use your gold to buy dyes and play with your armor's colors as well (if your into that kinda thing).

Let the 15k nay-sayers keep their gold, they'll soon realise that gold is worth nothing, absolutely diddly-squat, until it is spent. The person who hordes the most gold is actually the poorest in the game.

That defies current conventional wisdom Discordia!
However, I suspect you are as broke as I am...lol..

Edit: Oh, and even though I think outside the box (the sane box that is), I'm still not a Discordian.

I've managed to ***** 60k gold, along with a ton of crafting materials. All this for the 1.5k armour for my ranger

Gold is used for everything. For materials, dyes, armor. Thats all easy to obtain though, and later, its nothing but a stylistic device to change your characters appearance.

Gold is to save for my ridiculously expensive but very cool looking fissure armor
Although it sucks having to compete with rising prices

I use lots of gold cause I don't have many runes unlocked and whenever I make a new pvp char, I drop some runes on it, then i delete it cause i need more character space.
