did anet recently update the graphic on altheas ashes...

its now the graphic for glittering dust? or is it supposed to be the urn graphic.
(or the ashes show as glittering dust graphic w/o the urn.)

just want this confirmed.

I helped my wife's second character do this on Sunday and the graphic was the same as Glittering Dust (which is a change from when I did it some time ago).

Interestingly enough, even though I did not have the quest in my log I still was able to click the altar and get my own set of ashes. Also, the game gave us both two sets of ashes, too.

Here's a bit of craziness!

it is the "glittering dust" graphic... and you CAN, that's right you CAN buy it from another person in Piken. Last night I was running through the quest with a third character and (I had already found the ghost) and many people were trying to sell the ashes for 200g each. I convinced a guy to let me try it first and I'd pay him afterwards if it worked. I was so totally shocked when it worked that I gave him double price. I think they should fix this so it doesn't work, but for anyone who has already done the mission and can't be arsed to do it with an alt, buying the ashes works.

HOWEVER:

One of my guild mates bought ashes at the same time, and it didn't work for him. English isn't his first language so I couldn't get to the root of the problem, but I suspect that he bought the barradin family urn, which is not at all the same as the ashes...

Yup it now works. I think Anet really messed up big time on this one. Before a recent patch, it was not possible to buy the ashes as the only item in inventory was the Barradin family urn. Selling the Barradin family urn does not help someone else complete the quest.

This is a huge source of controversy because someone who played a character before a recent patch would think that those trying to sell ashes were scamming when they're not, at least not anymore.

I also consider it extremely lame to allow someone to complete the quest by getting the ashes from someone else.

third character pffft. I completed this quest the usual way on all my 6 character professions

It's not really that difficult and can be done with henchies.

it's not the difficulty involved (and henchies tend to be easier on missions like this one cuz they don't run ahead) it's the time spent. first you have to get to Grendich, then slowly and painstakingly clear out the area around the fire temples, just outside the gullet... long time. I did it during my lunchbreak when I only had 1 hour, cuz I bought the ashes .

Is buying the ashes to avoid the time to beat the quest considered an exploit?

It could be I suppose... I don't think it's a serious exploit though, since it's taking advantage of an oversight as opposed to a bug. I mean, if I had a box of blank cd's at my house and you needed them but the store was 30 minutes away, I'd sell them to you for the same price I got them for. This isn't much different. I do think that it should be fixed so that you need to click the altar yourself to finish the quest.

On a related note, the last time I did the quest (second character) 3 of us only got 2 ashes... we had to rezone through Dragon's Gullet and clear the area (smaller this time cuz we were closer) again to get the ashes a third time. If simply clicking the altar updated the quest it would take care of both these problems.

This is compounded by the fact that they don't take any ashes from you for doing the quest, just checking to see if you have them.

Anyone else actually like the challenge of the quest? I would never consider buying or accepting a gift of the ashes. I like to see how each of my character in turn handles it. Yes, it seems like a cakewalk later on, but remember when you were lvl 10?

My ING is Grim Skybasher, i give out free ashes. Most of time, i help people with the ashes quest and i would get the quest item too. I would get 12 to 8 ashes per quest (i guess it depends on the number of people you took on that quest) since you can't sell the ashes for gold, i give them out for free. Usually for my guild mate or someone out there that need the ashes

Anyone that buys them instead of earning them needs a good kick in the ash. A cheat's a cheat, even if it's allowed by oversight.

I can confirm this. Getting ashes from the altar gave me 4 urns of ashes, and giving them to another party finished the quest for them.

What is a cheat?

Trash to one man is gold to another.

Cheating to you is not cheating to everyone.

Well there is a skill-trainer there, i would go there for that alone.

As for the Ashes, i could actually transfer it between characters via storage. It wasn't actually planned , i was moving glittering dust into storage and swopped it around, on another char it happened again and i got a nice "Quest: Altheas' Ashes Updated" ...

Taking credit for something you didn't do... you don't consider that cheating? Dishonest?

Perhaps aNet will fix this soon.

I bought a good sword the other day. Does that mean I cheated to get it?

Irrelevant, it's the act of buying the ashes that is dishonest, regardless of the source of the money. You can use honest, hard-earned money to pay a hitman to have your mother killed, that doesn't make you a great guy for earning the money honestly.

True, but I was just ruffling your feathers

If its an exploit, they will close it. Personally, its not clear to me either way (as are quite a few other things in this game that mechanics allow for but tend to be "grey")

Its a bug that needs to be fixed. That's all.

It is, however, a bug that allows you to contradict the storyline, so make up your own story.

How abouts...

This Duke gives me a quest to find his daughter's ashes. Well in my journey I came across a kindly stranger who had noted a group of charr tormenting, torturing and killing a young woman. He made a great effort to intervene and save her, but was unsuccessfull and ended up with some of her scattered ashes as evidence of his trial. He has also told the Duke of this harrowing tale, but as the Duke has also asked you, he must need further confirmation. The kindly stranger offers you a sample of his ashes to further convince the Duke of his daughter's fate. You then follow through and return to the Duke with this evidence for which he thanks you.

Perhaps this story is a valid quest solution as well
