Hi All....
Am I doing something wrong, or is it normal for the quest to find Rurik disappear as soon as I walk out of Sumria?
I have gone through it a few times....I get the quest, follow to Sumiria, am told to go get him, yet as soon as I walk out the whole thing acts as if it was never there. No pointer, no quest log....nothing.

Umm, there should be a mission at Surmia, try doing that.

Yeah...

You might need to talk to some at surima to get the mission as you have to do that in most places
Enigmatics
No, actually you have to press "enter mission" if you're the party leader, and have the leader press it if you aren't. The people you talk to give some history and background; the first few missions have people that tell you how the mission works. You dont have to talk to him/her.

OH....so finding Rurick IS the MISSION....not a 'quest' prior to the mission....that makes sense then.
thanks

Sorry about that, everyone. Thank you for this information. It is really appreciated.
I'm not mad at you kind folk on the Forums but the dumb-##@, mother-#$#-ing quest designer at ArenaNet who neglected to put in ONE MISERABLE line of text telling people they needed to PUSH THE DAMN 'Enter Mission' button to find Rurik!!!
You read the quest text and it plainly TELLS YOU to 'search for him north of the Wall'. Well, that's what I freaking did! The text DOESN'T tell you to 'Push the Enter Mission' button to start the quest!!
I've been wasting a days trying to find a way into that zone you see North of Surmia on the maps and trying to find that @#&*-head Rurik!! I went all the way to Diessa Lowlands searching! I *was* enjoying the game until this point and then these unclear, misleading instructions turned it into a piece of tedious @#&#
God, ArenaNet is so lucky this game doesn't charge monthly fees. I have to stop playing now for a week or two, this has left such a bad taste in my mouth.
Again, many thanks to the people who posted on this thread and who, unlike the quest text writers at ArenaNet, are actually CLEAR and UNAMBIGUOUS.

I just checked and Fort Ranik is the same as the Ruins, Zap. You need to hit the 'Enter Mission' button while in that town and you'll go into a whole zone dedicated to another quest to hold back the Charr army.
Gee, thanks ArenaNet for making this major game mechanic SO $#(-ing obvious!
You'd think people who made a game with a Tutorial that covers the first 1-8 levels of your character MIGHT bother to include something important like this during it.

I was really starting to enjoy this game too, I was thinking Gee, someone finally did an online game RIGHT and then this. Sigh.

Hey now, don't blame the game because you failed to try out a new button

For something like that button which introduces a major game element, it should be flashing, bright red and candy-like, maybe a little glowing effect for good measure. Heck they waste enough CPU power on the darn bloom FX, how about a little for something that's actually IMPORTANT?
I guess I'm just annoyed because so much of GW's game mechanics take care of stupid stuff you find in quests from other MMORPGs *cough* Warcraft *cough* GW has a quest menu that tell you *where* the quest-giver NPC is located, all the steps of the quest are listed at the beginning, nice obvious icons on the minimap showing you *where* to go (though I've run into a bugged quest before so I thought the Rurik one had the same problem)
But I guess they still haven't covered the problem of decent instructions. When all you have to go on is a couple of lines of text, the designers should make darn SURE that text is concise and clear.
