I really like the Earth Magic powers, as they provide some decent dmg and neat side effects (blind, knockdown, ...), but I can't get used to this damn exhaustion coming with some of its skills.
My team got beat up pretty bad during a mission and me (with the earth ele), a monk and a necro were the last ones standing and had to hold the ground due to being cut off from any escape route. We managed to survive that assault, but in the end I had 0 energy left and the whole bar filled with exhaustion, resulting in minutes of waiting until that damn bar was recharged again.
Now I'm toying with the idea of switching to fire, since I don't really feel that I'm able to support my team properly, as I run out of energy way too fast, even with a high energy storage, and need ages to recharge again.
Am I missing s.th. or is there really no way to lighten the load of exhaustion?

Use less exhaustion skills? More than two exhaustion skills is probably a waste in PvP. More than one is a waste in PvE.

Yeah,
but the ones that come with exhaustion are the ones that actually do s.th.
At least from my point of view it's like letting a fire ele decide between flares, fire storm or meteor.

Maybe you should try using them less, like using Earthquake and Eruption, then use Stoning for awhile to keep doing damage, but not getting Exhaustion.

Get Glyph of Energy if you're going to use exhausting skills to help manage the exhaustion, although I doubt it's going to make a huge difference.
You generally don't want more than ~2-3 exhaustion causing skills, and not more than 2 if you spam them too often.
Obsidian Flame is far too easy to let yourself cast over and over again.
Swap skills around, and pick things you may not have that can still support the team, even if not in the same way.
You can also split your attribute points for even more skill options.

Think you'll find fire easier to cope with in pve, since it does more damage to stationary groups.
