Then obviously you are adjusting to this style, which doesn't mean it is automatically horrible. It's really not that bad. The only thing annoying is standing with you back next to a wall, but you can quickly adjust the camera whenever you want.

You do not need a guild to do well in the game. I haven't had a guild since release and all four of my characters beat the game.
Yes you do need to party, but that doesn't make the game lame. If you could solo through the whole thing then it would just be one giant exploit game with no real purpose and balance. But you can use henchmen, and contrary to what many say they are not as hard to use as you would think.
But you said you haven't even been past the academy. There is no need for you to group before that (besides two quests, one which you should do for Resurrection Signet, the other is just for fun/exp).
The problem here is not because the game has flaws (it does have them like any game, but you will hardly realize them if any during Pre-Academy time) but it's because you are still in the "newbie" zone. Before the Academy IS the solo, get-use-to-the-game-and-have-fun part where you learn how to play.
And you do quests to get skills (and later you can buy them from Skill Trainers if you don't want to quest). So just killing things blindly isn't going to do any good but get you exp and loot. Talking to NPCs will get you a long way in the game, like it does in lots of RP type games.
