My first rare item experience was when i reached yak's bend. Right outside the door i killed something that dropped a hammer of giant slaying. I was in awe. =)

Oh, and I have no clue where I got mine. I'm just disappointed in the gold drops. I expected more but most of the time its easier to find a good blue weapon than the gold of the same type that you just got. For classic RPG players, the items just aren't godly enough. However I know this is the point of the game. To keep it balanced and challenging. But theres always the wish that you had a weapon that could destroy anything in the game.

I got mine right ousaide Yaks Bend also. It was a beastmaster harness and had a major rune of vigor in it, but when i used my expert salvage on it, i got some crafting materials

I got my first gold drop doing the Fort Ranik mission during the last beta weekend. It was some kind of bow, I don't remember exactly. Didn't matter anyway, but I remember thinking "What's this?" when the "You Have Unlocked..." came up.

Drake in Gates Of Kryta, until the patch came out... It was an Earth Staff, 11-21 damage. Can't remember the rest of it though!

Last night (at level 16) teamed for the first time with someone other than a henchmen (who was 20) off some random kill on the way to the temple of ages. Traded it to said 20 (for a major rune of vigor) and it promptly poofed during expert salvage.

first ever purple or gold rare drop was on gate to kryta mission. it was a bow with the most weird specs ever.
it was max dmg, with vamp 5/1, had a dmg bonus. had a hp regen -1, so vamp + that was -2 hp regen, so 4 hp every second :O had someother stuff to, it was good cept for teh -2hp regen, i expert salvaged it, now its a vamp half moon fortitude
