Why, because I have no idea what the majority of L33t speak is.
I find NooB,nOOb and if noob to be the most annoying phrases ever.

A ] noob = new player unsure of game, or
b ] noob = player who thinks they know what they are talking about when actually they haven't got a clue. (like a sales man selling a clapped out car to a guy, only the guy is actually a motor mechanic and knows exactly what's up with the car so aint gonna fall for the sales speel.)

In fact I firmly beleive 90% of the people who use the word haven't got a clue what it means.
If it is A] then, its abit like the pot calling the kettle black, as we all start somewhere and if we don't help the new players out how can we expect peope to help us later.
and if it is B ] then atleast 75% of the people who use the word are actually noobs themselves.

Now being in the 30+ bracket, noob to me sounds strickingly close to nob.
Now nob I can understand, infact most people calling others noobs are actually being nobs. In fact if people call me a nob then they either took offence at what I did so thats their issue or they are actually anti social gamers or I myself am being unreasonable and anti social.

Noob or nob you decided.

LOL! I'm in the same age-bracket as you and I find it all rather mystifying and rather... odd myself. It isn't that I don't understand it. It's just that I find it so...meaningless.

But it's true: Everyone, even the fastest learner the game has produced, had to be a new player at -some- point. I find it fascinating that people conveniently forget that small fact.

And, really, can't people come up with anything better than n00b? LOL! It's just kind of laughable.

Oh...and my vote is for nob.

"Nob?" Never heard that one before. Where's it from?

I remember the days when a newbie was just someone who was...new. What ever happened to those days?

Whenever I use "noob", it's in quote-mark, since I'm being sarcastic when quoting others using it. I just find this term overused and meaningless, a typical internet insult without meaning, kinda like "get a life". When you have nothing better to say to someone - call him a noob.
Only time I use it "normally" is when I make fun of friends - but this is a joke, not an insult(especially when spelled backwards )

Edit: Another thing that annoys me is "owned", and especially "pwned" variant. Still, it's better than "raped" that some use

n00b can be used to describe a wide varity of people now I guess. I normaly use it to someone who is new the game and a pain in the butt ("Whats this do?" "Why can't we jump." "How do you go inside a house?"), but I also have used it to someone who is a hacker, since they're so bad at the game that they have to cheat to win.

I use l33t sp34k when I'm being sarcastic, or at a time when it's actually funny, but those times are pretty rare. People who use l33t sp34k out of habit or to mock others really rattle my cage.

I'm in the high-end of that age bracket...and I've completely given up trying to keep track of changing slang terms - although I have friends who often clue me in.

The last time I kept up with such things was when 'grody' and 'tubular' were floating around some circles - and those were embarrassing enough.

This is how I understand the terms "Newbie" and "Noob"

source: www.urbandictionary.com:

Noob (adj.) is the term coined by gamers reffering to abusive, arrogant players that show no real skill and refuse to co-operate.
Noob speak - "1 PWN3D UR @55!!!!!1111!!11"

The word 'Newbie' is often confused with noob/noobie/n00b which refers to someone new to the game.

I modified the definition slightly, but this is how I always understood the 2 terms...

when one reads the word "noob" one must rememebr two things:

at times it can be used to describe someone without much game knowledge (ie: a newbie)

most often then not a "noob" (or "n00b") is meant as a derogatory remark. someone that has exprience with said game but is still overly clueless.

and i'm with PD, i too use of 1337 speak when being ironic . I often couple that with other terms i have picked up from other games. so the end result is something along the lines of "oi m7 lo, hws u?"

dont ask for a translation, its an almaganation of abbreviations i've witnessed from the other MMORPG i've palyed.

Newbie = someone new to the game.

Noob = someone (new to the game), who acts like (s)he knows everything about it, while (s)he doesn't

Naab = "new" and "Dutch" version of Noob.. seems to grow populair however remains stupid.

using the word noob is not 1337 language.
that'd be N00B
or.. |\| 00 |3

anyways.. it's all lame.. and only takes like 10 times longer to type

Which did you like better: 1st or 2nd Darrin?

Who is more effective: Kirk or Piccard?

Would you go on a 3 hour tour?

I introduced many terms into the games I played in the past (More than one person has come up with them, I know, but, for that game/server at least, I started it ), so, I will share some of the ones I used and the basics.

Basic terms that will always be there:

Newb: Without a doubt, this person is obviously a brand new player to the game/area/event/etc

Noob: Someone completely unaware of what is going on, yet is one that claims to have played for a long time. They are essentially idiots that have not learned how to play the game/area/event/etc properly (Example: Someone Aggro'ing the same mob when told not to after repeating the mission multiple times) These people are best avoided altogether. Synonyms include: Asshat, 'Tard, Moron, and Idiot. Emotes to express encoutners with them are /doh and /sigh.

Newblet: A step below Newb. These people are new to the game, but they make playing with them a drain on your time and efforts.

Nooblet: Step below Noob. This is a person that not only fits the description of a Noob, but some how gets in your way at every critical thing or event that you need to take care of while playing. If you know of 8-bit Theatre, then this is the Fighter to your Black Mage.

Nub and Nublet: This evolved from the use of the term "Noob Tube", to "Nube Tube", and down to just "Nub" for those who weilded a "Noob Tube" in RTCW and ET. These Nubs and Nublets are people who are so thick-headed or so ignorant, that they repeatedly do something very annoying without even being aware of the fact that they are doing it. Examples include people that type in all capatilizations, draw on the map without knowing others can see it, go idle at critical moments without realizing that communication with the team is vital, and most importantly: etc.

Well, I might add to this if I can remember any of the "vulgar" sayings that I used to describe people while on TS and Ventrilo back in my clan days in RTCW, ET, and CoD.

Every once in a while I say "far out" and "groovie" and people look at me funny.
Well they look at me funny anyways, but more than usual.

Yea, I prefer Newb over Noob....we are all newbs once.

lol the only 'leet' speak i use is newb/noob or 'teh' when im being too lazy to correct spelling mistakes.

I think you'll find in general that most people (not all of course) use 'Newb' to mean someone who is new to the game, and 'Noob/N00b' as an insult, basically meaning morons that have no clue what they're doing but insist on pretending they do and being generally offensive to others.

newbs are normally ok, I like newbs. they're fun to help out and once they've learnt the basics, usually make great partying companions. Noobs on the other hand need burning at the stake. Preferably in a controlled fire so they suffer pain, but gagged so we finally no longer have to listen to their whining

EDIT:

I think the ALLTIME largest annoyance for me, is "teh" rather than "the". like why? it's not even pronouncable. The same goes for "Nub" instead of "noob" or "newb". Quality engrish kids seem to be learning today...

One time a Guildie and I were forming a Tombs group. We had all 8 players ready to go when he types "h3y d3wds" as a joke and I swear they were all gone in 1.5 seconds. The only leet speak I ever use is teh and that is always because my brain lost control of my fingers and I accidentally typed e-h instead of h-e.

Well, I've gotten used to the word "noob" now. When someone calls out some one for being a "noob" I immediately know that there's no way I want to join a party with this individual. People who use "noob" normally quit mid mission if things start getting hard or when they've captured their elite skill or something.

The term that I'm starting to see that's driving me batty is "toon" to describe your character. Huh? I guess it became too difficult to say "character" or "char" or even the individual class like "monk". But "toon". "Toon" will always mean cartoon to me - as in an animated character created from asian sweatshops voiced by over paid voice actors.

I had thought more than once about starting a thread like this. If I never hear the word "noob" or nOOb or any other variation on that theme again it would be fine with me. Exceptions are when it is used in a self-deprecating manner. Using it as an insult or chest thumping trash talk just makes you a non-person to me. I wont group with you. This means of course that I rarely group with anyone, and it takes almost no time at all for me to switch off my local chat once I deign to turn it on.

Why people think this makes them likeable or desirable to have in your group confuses me somewhat too. Obviously these people find groups so others excuse this stupidity.

This will probably end my time in Guild Wars before I would be otherwise ready because the game really wants you to group with people and do pvp, but the trash talking junior high school playground that is pvp leaves me cold. I'm an adult, educated and a fan of the strategy and tactics of Guild Wars. But I'll probably not be here long, as the end game demands you wade through the leet speakers and random PUGS only to end up at pvp where people talk about your mom in horrible English. I wouldn't mind playing pvp or endgame content but my standards are apparently too high for the community.

Too bad I can't find a guild of adults but how do you wade through the crap to find one? Ranking in the ladder or wins in HoH? Don't make me laugh. Some of them are the worst at leet talking about sleeping with your mom. I don't want to know those people. I can't imagine anyone who does want to know them. So a few of those same people I disdain will now tell me to go or something obscene and laugh at their own wit. All I can say is you're part of what's wrong with the world; fevered egos devoid of intellect and proud of that fact. Truth and honor are out of fashion and scams and insults are in. Count me out.

actually...noob is a term that has been "leeted up" from "newbie" which was generally used to refer to a gamer(in the commodore age) that couldn't install/run a video game(as it wasn't plug and play back then)....the term is overused by a population of children that don't know it's origins...it has nothing to do with a gamer that hasn't completed/lacks knowledge of the game itself.
