I never made a ranger to charm, but I really wanted to charm the rabbit

Ensign
The spiders and lizards were not charmable. Don't worry, I made a stink about that with /bug.

There is only three types of familiars. The cat, pig, and the retarded bird!!
Hello everyone my first post!!
Hello everyone my first post!!

Aladdar
actually that's not true. There are other types of pets you can tame.
Xapti
...Such as the snow wolf, Melandru's Guard (that what they're called?), (maybe bear in hte future?)
cpukilla
Could you charm a bear? I didn't think so but I didn't try. So... what are the other animals you can tame?

Aladdar
I'm not sure which ones were implemented this weekend and which ones are alpha only right now so to protect myself, I'm not going to answer.

i stayed in the pre-seared ascalon this weekend and this is what i found:
i saw tons of striders around, which seem to be low level moa birds. melandru's stalker, the pet you need to charm for the skill quest, was the only other actually charmable pet i saw. i heard mention of a warthog as well, but the prize-winning pigs were not charmeable. moss spiders were not charmable and unfortunately, i did not get to see a dern lizard. there was also a rabbit on top of the hill near ashford that could not be charmed.
wolves and bears had a skill called "break charm" that would interrupt your charm shortly after you started it. i was unsuccessful at having others with knockdown or energy drain to try to disable it. it seems to be an insta-cast, little-to-no energy requiring skill.

There was a warthog next to the actors stage

I ran with several Rangers who'd picked up Melandru's Stalkers; I agree that not being able to charm the 'friendly' spiders and the bunnies was rather sad.
Did anyone try to charm the Giant Tree Spiders—not the Moss Spiders from Green Hills, but the Giant Tree Spiders from the south-east Regent area?
There were two kinds of spiders in Regent: Giant Needle Spiders and Giant Tree Spiders. The latter seemed friendly, and the former would attack them on sight.
Unfortunately, the character I with which I did most of my exploring didn't have charm skills.

i thought that i would get attacked by both the needle spiders and the tree spiders. i do recall trying to charm a spider (either needle or tree) and getting an error saying that it was not considered an animal or something to that effect..
Misnomer
I ran into a large bull before I got my charm skill. Did anyone try to charm him? That would have been an awesome pet. He wasnt green but then again the cats arent when you first meet them either.
Bgnome
currently, from what i understand, normal charmable animals do not show up on your radar, red, green, or otherwise. if you look the that color of the text of their name, either by holding ALT or mouse-over, it is green.
once charmed, your pet becomes a yellow dot on your radar. red dot animals are difficult to charm so far. i believe that if you target a normal charmable animal that is not your or anyone else's pet, it registers as a green dot on your radar.
i did not observe this phenomenon all that closely so i could be mistaken.

It should be noted that the color of the text on a creatures name has nothing at all whatsoever to do with whether it's charmable or not. I've charmed a red text snow wolf, and no matter how many times I try to charm Prince Rurik, it doesn't work, despite the green text. When looking for something to charm, pay no attention to the color of the creature's name, it doesn't mean anything with regard to charmability.

Since the monsters you mentioned had "Break Charm", maybe we should try having a party of 4 rangers venture and try to charm the same monster at the same time.
Bgnome
parties in the pre-searing area are limited to 2 players at a time.
Reaper2k3
a single distracting shot might be able to take them, but good luck at that

Things I tried to charm:
Wolf - successful
Snow Wolf - successful
Stalkers -successful
Lynx - successful (Playfull Lynx is a leveled up version I think level 12)
warthog -successful
Bunny - no
Spider - no
Bear - no (I thought that should have worked)
Bull - No
Prize Pigs - no
Giant Worms - no
Shark - no (lol then again... how?... NVM)
Hellhound - Hell no, but would have been funny to have...
Giant Lightning Lizards - No (always around beaches... to powerfull anyways)
Edit: Moa Bird - Someone said that was successful, but didnt think of it. lol
I noticed mounted enimies in some of the far western areas.. so maybe horses can be charmed. Mount / dismount button. Like when carrying the Staff of Orr ??? Might be interesting... Have a couple of unique attacks you can do while mounted but thats all.. For regular fighting you have to dismount.

I thought wolf broke charms as well, how did you charm it and not a bear?
Bgnome
no mounts.
wolves do use break charm but not as often as bears, hence it would be easier to charm one.

Greentongue
Is that "break charm" a signet or might you drain their energy to prevent it from being used?
Vermilion Okeanos
The skill icon doesnt look like a signet... but it might cost 0 energy regardless... or the bear actually have 99999999999999999 energy... hopfully not but whatever... maybe they will put those bears in the new area after sanctum cay.
Bgnome
it is a creature skill -- there is a specific icon for creature-only skills. it looks kinda like a fiery imp face on a greyish background. energy-wise, he seemed to be able to use it quickly and as often as i used charm animal, so i am certain that there is little to no casting time/recharge time on his skill but energy has got to be less than 10.
the hp/energy pool equation is the same for all creatures so they have the exact same amount of energy as a level 3 player would.

rabbit was not charmable. the SO tried.
OutOfThePicture
bears are charmable, it just takes two people, the right timing and a LOT of work. mine took me about half an hour to charm, they can take longer though
Zebideedee
I seen a 'Swarm of bees' I was like woot, fought my way to where the bee's hang out (after changing to ranger secondary), and got "This creature is not an animal" Doh!
Ps. They stung me anyway

I was heart broken when I couldn't charm the Swarm of Bee's in pre (Poor Tenant's quest). How I wish i could carry that honeycomb forever!

If you scroll to the bottom of the page of any thread you will see a section for similar threads. Most of these other threads are years old since guru doesn't delete anything.
By looking at the bottom of this thread three of them are pretty old.

Seriously :P did no one else actually read this thread before they responded XD they were talking about pre-searing in an APLHA weekend stage! the thread dates back to 2005. Nice to see a little piece of history - are these members still playing i wonder :P?
Snograt
Yeah, I agree with Tommarrow; it's that "similar threads" thing at the bottom. Gets random browsers interested and they don't think to check the date.
Useful for other purposes, but does lead to an increase in thread necromancy
