There are many effective builds in Guild Wars, as you know...something that I can see working (which I wanna try myself) is a Mo/R or a R/Mo. Being a monk helps keep you *and* your pet alive, while having a few pet skills to use your pet as an effective weapon.
Most people don't see the upside of using a pet because they can't use it like a normal weapon. It's a living creature, thus it is rather whimsical. It will attack when you attack, but it is a solid object and may have to go around things to do so. You *cannot* use a pet to pull. It doesn't behave like an arrow. A pure ranger pulls, you just sit back and make sure Fido doesn't die. However, if Fido's strong enough (i.e. with the right skills)...then he's an effective ally, and a SECOND life bar.
And, I imagine more than a few rangers using BM in PvP, if only to use Tiger's Fury, which is very easily spammable. In fact, I like spamming TF (though I don't PvP). I run a 10 in BM using a Superior BM Rune. 9 secs of fast-firing!
Yeah, they can't farm well, they can't solo well off the bat, they have rather short energy bars which does not coincide with how many skills take ~10 mana, they have pets, etc. Yeah, they're "bad". Or people generally don't know how to play them. One or the other, and most people will vote for the latter.

Actually, Pets are kind of good (If they are pretty high lvled). They act as another problem for PvPing cause they are pretty strong. They can cast spells? I never knew that part.
Besides other then that they look cool...besides if your a Ranger you don't want those...what do I call it....monsters to attack you right? You can use the pet as a meat shield XD. Other then that theres no other reason that I can think of.

on topic, I had a R/Me and I played with a couple of diffrent set ups, and noticed (which is kind of obvious I guess) if you actually put points into Beastmastery and used the skills then the pet is really very usefull, otherwise it is basically a speed bump.

I have my Beastmastery pumped up and my pet is vicious in PvE and PvP.
There have been long discussion threads on the benefits of pets, so I don't want to recover old ground, but in my opinion, they're worth it, but you have to invest in them. Pump your beastmastery up to 10 or more and check out the results!
However, that said, I don't use my pet outside my guild in HoH PvP. If I'm soloing in HoH and trying to get on a pick-up team, I leave the pet at home. Why? Because sooo many people balk at pets in HoH. It's already hard enough to get on a team as a ranger.
In the 4 on 4 PvP, I bring my pet. Folks are a little less "serious" there.
Bottomline: A pet is valuable in PvP, but most people don't seem to realize this.

Tigers Fury uses Beast Mastery...also a lvl20 pet...while not the best for PvP still adds another tank to the team that has them. The opposing team still has to kill 1 more creature than your team does.

I've got a W/R with a pet wolf. There's one major problem with this combo which stops me from actually playing with this guy more: melee we'll get temporarily stuck together. I will have to move my guy away and then retarget the enemy for the pet to start attacking. It's just a little buggy, but oh well.A
