Ok I've searched the forums but I am still a bit confused as to Runes. Please confirm if my understanding is correct.

1. A rune or upgrade component can come from a blue, purple or gold drop
2. To use (unlock) the Rune/component by a PvE character for PvP it should be identified first. But it can still be used by a PvE character whether or not you id' it tourself.
3. You must use an expert salvage kit to extract the rune/component

Is this process the right one because last night I did that on 2 purple items and only got crafting materials. What are the % chances now of getting runes out of drops?

I really would like to understand the process because I am really loving this game so far.

You are correct on all counts.

The chances of extracting the rune with an expert kit is high, but not automatic. Crafting materials can still be the end result. It's just bad luck on your part i'm afraid to say.

Also, runes dont stack. If you have a Minor and Major they wont stack on top of each other, the major will take the place of the Minor. But runes will stack on top of modded clothing, i.e. Major Air rune on top of a Storms Eye for example.

Runes come from armor blue, purple or gold. Not from weapons, shields, idols,etc.. only "armor" type things. It is said in the description if it is an armor or not.

Could you clarify this a bit? I'm also confused. Do you mean that if I apply a Minor Rune of Blood Magic to my boots and then later find a Major Rune of Blood Magic and apply it to my gloves I only benefit from the Major Rune, not Minor + Major Rune?

Taking this further - if I apply a Minor Rune of Blood Magic to my boots and another Minor Rune of Blood Magic to my gloves, I'm only getting the boost from the first Rune, correct?

yes You only benefit from 1 type of rune(beign your choice to be minor, mayor, superior)

So the maximun attribute points you can obtain is 3 from a superior rune. (-75HP)

I think you actually unlock the runes when you identify the item. I have uncovered three runes thus far, each from unidentifed purple drops. As soon as I IDed the item, I was told I unlocked the rune, then just salvaged the item to produce it. I believe the Devs updated the salvagability of items to guarantee you get a rune if the item is holding one.

So that's where I went wrong! I applied it to weapons (hammer and axe).

Thanks for the great answers, now I understand better.
