What i think would be really cool would be bringing in different races to play as instead of just humans, and maybe the races could specialise in certain things and stuff like that.
For example:
  • Human- Average in all aspects
  • Wood Elf-Great at archery
  • (river, sun, ground, cloud) Elf- better elementalists
  • Dwarf-good at combat but more resistant to attacks
  • Ork/Orc-Good at combat but with higher strength
  • Vampire-Better Necros
I havn't got any other ideas at the moment for a mesmer or a monk, but post if you think this would work or not, any suggestions welcomed

I really don't want to see the typical D&D-race system. But since ingame lore is already vastly unique (talking about Charr, Mursaat, Forgotten Ones, etc.) I hope we don't have to fear another D&D-system.

What I also don't want to see, is inherent bonusses to certain races that result in a more or less restrictive class choice. Eg. all Elves (let's hope we don't get squishy Elves ^^) get a bonus to marksmanship, so in the end every ranger has to become an Elf. Same is true for all other classes. The game is about freedom of choice and equal opportunities (except for clothing *g*), so races for me are mainly a way to increase the number of possible variations regarding looks.

If anyone comes up with an idea that doesn't restrict the combat balance (in both, PvE and PvP) but adds to the flavor of races, I'd happily accept it, of course.

edit: do a search before you bump a thread with a topic that has already been discussed. And don't bump it within minutes, that doesn't encourage anyone to reply (at least I wouldn't, if I hadn't written the reply before).

i've always thought that making everyone human was a novel idea. if you want to play different races you can play neverwinter nights or world of warcraft.

having everyone play a human makes everyone equal. guild wars tries very hard to make the classes equal also.

The skill bonuses was a last minute idea, and i can see what you mean.

Did you just bump this twice within the span of 10 minutes?

Can't you even wait a day?

They already said that races are considered (and likely) to be added in future expansions. So I don't think it is a design decision not to put them in at release - it's not that they don't want to have them in, but there are other things to focus on, besides, it's something easy to advertise if you want to sell Chapter 2.

The thought of wood-elves with archery bonus makes me cringe. If GW gets Elves and Orcs I will be very disappointed: I love that Anet put some original thought into it and has not fallen into the D&D rut.

I think there should only be races from the story, charr, druids, forgotten, mursaat. Each with its own story line. Hobbits would be awesome, but they don't fit in.

There are many different ways they can handle this:

Could only be cosmetic (appearance but that's it)
Job Specific to a race - what we have now would be the human jobs for example
Give race specific advantages / disadvanages in jobs / attributes

I wouldn't mind playing from another race point of view then coming across the "humans".

Demote the "Job Specifice" and "Race advantages" a little.

Make different races, with differing professions...but the same skills. If you can be a Charr, and want to be a Ranger-type profession...he'd simply be a Hunter. But, the skillset would be the same. It's what GW promotes when you fight mobs anyway. They have the *same* ablilities...just different names.

It'd be cool to be a White Mantle Scout. Same as my Ranger...but...White Mantle! Then I could say, "I'm with Cuthbert the Chaste. *rawr*"

Dwarf should be a choice. They are already in the game.
Something besides the normal elf/orc like:

Cenetaur?
Saraphim?
A Giant? /Ogre?
Minataour? (spelling)

The only problem with Centaur/Giant/Ogre/Minotaur is that those are all only evil races, do you see any good centaurs or minotaurs? No.

I could see Dwarves and Forgotten as choices in the next expansion as those both have good NPCs.

Where are saraphim in the game?

They are not in the game. Just posting an idea.

The Centaur idea I base of the fact that some of the shinig Blade were working with some (on the side of good if you will).
