Weird graphic glitch
bizarresk
hey
i have a little graphic problem. i have a radeon x1600pro agp from sapphire. 256mb. catalysts 6.3 installed, tryed 6.2 and omegas 6.2.
problem is when i look at my victos axe from specific angle (from behind or as the picture shows) it turns all kinda greenish with no texture. this happens in SF too with some chains.. one angle - ok, another angle no texture. :/
anyone got ideas? seems to be happenin since the last update

I started seeing the same thing right after one of the updates Thursday morning. I noticed it on the fire imps just outside of LA/D'Alessio first, but have found several other things with the same glitch. Next time a monster drops some gold, look at the coins from different angles, from one side they appear to have the same greenish texture.
I have a 3Ghz P4 with i875 chipset and a Radeon 9800XT (Catalyst 6.2).

so u got exactly the same prob as me.. could be update+ati related :/
Brother Andicus
I have a very similar problem that first appeared today. I am losing textures for entire sections of the backdrop. I'm running a 6600GT, so not an ATI problem I dont think.
mr_stealth
I haven't noticed any backgrounds missing, just random models that are odd looking from one side, but normal from the other. I've played on 3 PCs and only my desktop has shown this problem. Both of the other PCs (my laptop and a relative's desktop) have nVidia cards. I didn't really play enough on the other PCs to have noticed missing backgrounds. All I did was check the fire imp and gold bag/coin models.
Str0b0
I dunno if it is ATi in general or not. I recently installed a new ATi card and I haven't noticed this particular problem. What settings are you running in game and what settings are you running for the card specifically?
mr_stealth
All of my Catalyst Control Center settings are default except vsync and catalyst AI, which are both always turned off. I haven't change any other settings since I installed the drivers a couple weeks ago.
I did swap around the in-game settings some, but the problem never went away.
In game graphics settings I have right now.
res - 1024x768
anti-aliasing - none
terrain quality - medium
reflections - default
texture quality - high
shadow quality - off
vertical sync - disabled
post-process effects - enabled
renderer - DirectX 9
My 9800xt is the only DX9 card I've tested. The nVidia cards were a Geforce 4 420 Go and a GeForce 3 Ti200.

Ok I admit it then I'm stumped unless there is just something about those specific textures that makes your cards wig out. When you say you you swapped he in game settings around I assume you also turned texture quality down as well. This is just so weird I have to ask this as well. When you installed that card did you have an Nvidia installed before? If so did you use a utility like driver cleaner? I know that NVidia and ATi drivers do bizarre things to each other, sometimes I suspect they do it on purpose.
mr_stealth
This PC has never had any nVidia product in it. And, yes texture quality setting was changed several times.
I actually just now went back in and changed all the graphics settings, and nothing effects it. I was looking at a drop of gold coins outside of ascalon. I did notice that the missing texture side shows up as a light tan color instead of the teal color from kryta. The color was similar to the sky and ambient lighting color, so it could be a problem with dynamic lighting effects.

I'm thinking it may have something to do with the dx9 implementation. Could be wrong though.

Not a glitch, its because your Victo's axe is shiny, so when you look at it from certain angles, it reflects the texture of the environment, i.e. in the swampy areas it goes light/murky green.
If you swap it out with a dull weapon, it doesn't happen.

mr_stealth
No, there is definitely a glitch. Just look at the pics in the first post. The lighting/reflection effects on his axe are completely hiding the model's actual texture.

This has nothing to do with the in-game graphics settings. I restarted my game for an update, and suddenly objects appear to have no textures from some angles. No settings were changed to cause this, and no changes I have made since have fixed it.
I've uploaded a couple pics of some fire imps just outside of D'Alessio Seaboard. The imp is facing towards me in both pics. The graphic glitch seems to only appear when I am looking at the side of the imp being lit by the game's lighting effects. Looking at the shadow side of the imp, with the lighting/reflection source behind it, the imp appears normal.

Same problem here. ATI Radeon 9800 non pro. Catalyst 6.3 drivers. Never had this problem until Factions preview weekend.

Our Guild Leader Tarun had this problem as well, here is his post on our Forums if you're interested.
http://www.lunarianknights.spy-gamin...opic/t=54.html
after getting the workaround by the Anet tech support about reinstalling the game and so forth, he downgraded his drivers to the previous one and works perfect now.

It started on March 23rd when their update went to DirectX 9 for graphics.
I am linking to this post to prove to them it is a problem on their side as well.

Hmmm, this has perked my interest. I'm running 6.3 CCC but didn't notice anything amiss. Played factions through the weekend and didn't notice anything wrong. Lucky me perhaps.

Same glitch here, radeon 9800 xt, catalyst 6.3 same glitchs, start afther the update...

Hmm, after seeing the sky textured imps I will apologise and agree there is some kind of texturing glitch.
Not so sure if its Ati Specific tho, as I have an X850 Pro with the latest ATi drivers, and i havn't experienced this.
I have seen the texture reflection on the weapons, however i can still see the axes detail.
Sky blue imps i havn't seen before :P
Maybe reinstall directx 9?

OMG, I've noticed the exact same thing and just thought it was my new computer. I'm using a radeon x1300 with updated drivers.
I get the same blue tree in pre-searing.
I got a run to Droknars last night and the runners victos axe was loosing texture from certain angles also.
I also noticed the azure shadows are almost invisible from certain angles in the bright white snow of the southern shiverpeaks.
I need to confirm these problems on my sons computer now. It runs a radeon 9800 pro and I haven't updated the drivers in quite awhile on it.

My system has the highest settings for Guild Wars.
I'm currently running:
Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz with Hyper Threading Technology
160GB SATA HD
2 GB DDR PC3200 RAM
ATI Radeon Pro X600XT graphics card 128MB at PCI-E 16x
Windows XP SP2 with all updates, running DirectX9.0c
I was running the latest ATI drivers (6.3 for RADEON) now reverted to 5.12.
What all they asked of me, even though I provided a plentiful amount of information in the initial bug report.
They asked me for a list of the following over the weekend: DxDiag log, EVEREST report, clean install of drivers, repair of Guild Wars, settings to lowest, Guild Wars running with -noshaders, temperature of my system, AquaMark 3d test, netinfotool_allos_gw.exe, HijackThis log.
When it got to them wanting a HijackThis log I was irritated, I had already told them I had checked my system for malware (including viruses and such). I do tech support for a hobby and am going into the field for it soon. When I did not provide the log, they stopped replying. What can I say? I was tired of being yanked around.
They only again became interested when I posted a solution and then began to answer other questions I had from my initial report. Nonetheless I am not pleased with their support and they will know so.
Here is their reply to seeing this thread:

I don't have a screenshot for it--but when me and a team were doing the Ring of Fire mission, whenever we came up on a ward, we'd notice.. a.. colour distortion of some sort (I can't remember now) would fall over the ward circle.
The little thing that shoots at you.
I asked if anyone else saw it, and they all said yeah.
I'm using an ATI 9800 Pro, myself.
I don't use the latest drivers, though. Friends told me the CCC was a resource RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO and told me to use some older drivers that would still give me the same results but without the same resource consumption.
I haven't, at least, experienced any of these other problems y'all have.
Just, uh, the ward colouring issue thing. ;P

Okay, I compared last night on 2 different computers.
I think this is Direct X9 related in conjunction with the last game update.
My new computer has Radeon x1300 with updated drivers - I get the glitch
My old computer has Radeon 9800 pro with old drivers - I don't get the glitch

yeah this is an ATI driver bug. 65.87 (not sure the catalyst number but it's from 11/22/2005) doesn't have this issue. they update their drivers frequently so we can look forward to a fix soon.

setting DX8 as renderer worked for me "D:\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -dx8 -heapsize 512000

Pretty sure it's Catalyst and/or update related.

Same type of problems for me with the latest Catalyst 6.2/6.3 drivers. I went back to my old 4.11 drivers and problem fixed! I have an X800 Pro.

(Edit: rolled back to 5.12, not 4.12 like I originally posted. Was at 6.3)

Nice, thanks for calling out the driver conflict info.
I also have been talking with ANet support on this issue and went through the drill of updated drivers (6.3 WHQL), new DAT file (1.8 GB download), and the -dx8 flag.
I'll try rolling back the drivers to the earlier version called out and see how it looks!
---------
I rolled back to ATI Catalyst 5.11 (x32 & x64) and found that the reflection problems went away.
I'm still seeing issues with transparent objects (Lyssa's Muse and Ether Seals) under Dx9, though. Anyone else seeing these problems?

Same problem here with me and I found a good site that has many of ATI drivers all in one place to save you time for searching all over the place for the drivers.

Those 2 are the exact same distortion/graphic errors I get!
I only noticed these 2 errors today, thought it was just me, going to -dx8 force GW to use DX8 again untill this is fixed. But before I do that, I'm gonna try rolling back to Catalyst 5.12 Drivers.

Thanks for the site Viper.

I did roll back to 5.11 Cat Drivers and the reflection is still there with the Seals and Pedastals. However the skin of the Victo's axe & Fire Imps are cleared up so still something needs to be looked at by A-Net + Driver Co's.

I'm so glad I found this thread, you guys saved me a lot of steps troubleshooting my problem!
Two weeks ago I was trying to play with my video settings to get rid of some lag and slow texture fill-in issues I had been having since the FPE. I wondered if my card was being detected as a 256MB card, and when I ran DxDiag and noticed I only had DirectX 9.0b so I thought hey, maybe I better upgrade to 9.0c. I did, and then I started having the same problems as you guys, with the blue trees and blue fire imps and blue lava in GW. Grr!!
Since you can't uninstall DirectX, I was pissed that it had caused a problem. I tried messing with my settings in Catalyst Control center to fix it, uninstall/reinstall the ATI software, uninstall/reinstall GW, etc, to no avail. Then today I found this thread and realized it wasn't just me. I noticed there is a new DirectX 9.0c package, installed it, rebooted, no change. I noticed there is a new Catalyst driver (6.4) so I installed that, and the problem went away! There's nothing in the Release Notes from ATI to indicate the new drivers intentionally fixed the problem, so we're just really lucky it helps, I guess
I ran around and checked lots of trees, fire imps, and pools of lava and haven't had any problems, where before they would screw up every time. So I'm certain the new drivers (possibly paired with the new DirectX) fix this. If you have NVidia, sorry, I have no NVidia cards to test the problem on

An alternative solution was to put this code for launching GW.
The 6.4 drivers do not have the issue either, though it makes me wonder if any of the patches released from ANet secretly fixed the issue that the 6.3 drivers may have been having.
Code:
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" -dx8
Fanatic
Sorry to dig up this thread but I thought it might be useful for those (with ATI) cards that have been playing with the -dx8 extension to by pass this bug to learn that the new updates from ANET (factions release) did not fix the issue. Update your drivers to cats 6.4 if you have a dx9 card.
I have been playing with the -dx8 work around until this update on my
x800xt pe and was tired of the dx8 performance. If you have a dx9 card, don't accept dx8 performance because for me there is a big fps/stuttering difference.

I get this same kind of problem with my 6800gt. My problem seems to be more severe then these and will eventually cause GW to crash. I didn't have any problems ever with GW until the update on 4/25 and I've been playing since release. Any ideas on what can be done?
