hmm well before I would argue axe is best 100%, but with the new updates, I'm gonna have to go with sword. yea, eviscerate still pwns, but gash got a dmg boost and its not an elite. that and final thrust pwns makes swords better IMO. plus, swords are better for farming
. I still carry my sephis axe and sup axe gauntlets though

I tried all 3, and I'll never go back to sword/axe from hammer. While you do lose the use of a shield, the protection that knockdowns with stonefist gauntlets (and belly smash
) give you makes up for it. The damage of hammers is high to compensate for their slower attack speed, and the knockdowns are just great for preventing your enemy from doing jack.

Ok, they all work for different builds. Breakdown:
Axe: 6-28
Sword: 15-22
Hammer: 19-35
They end up doing similar damage w/o skills w/ attack rates incorporated.
Axe is famed for w/ IWAY. W/o Eviscerate though, Factions will have to redeem it. Axe has a few cool looking skins, including the cliched Chaos Axe. Axes have become more popular over-time and are quite popular.
Swords are usually used w/ farming builds and ordinary PvE molds. They have cool-looking skins and my favorites (i.e. Crystallines, Fellblades, etc.). They also have the famous combo: Sever, Gash, Thrust. Gash became better w/ update and making Thrust any better they would have to make it an elite possibly. Swords have Final Thrust, which is like an elite, and gives you free space for an elite from Tactics. It's one Elite is weaksauce though. Boo Hundred Blades!
Hammers are looked down upon in PvE. They have cool skins though (Mursaat, Twin, etc.). They are commonly used in KD/Gale/Aftershock builds for *ORGANIZED* PvP. They don't do much in PvE though. They received a heavy Gale nerf though and aren't as popular as they were a few weeks ago.
My advice? Try swords and axes for PvE and see what you like best. Hammers can go into consideration if you do PvP also.

Axe has eviscerate and executioners...which is best for pvp. (hammer is probably tied...)
Sword is good for farming or pve...but of course you could use a wand in pve...or no weapon at all and kill everything with gladiators defence. Pve takes no effort...therefore there is no best weapon in pve.

I'd say sword based simply on the fact that its damage, while not as high as axe and hammer on the upper end, is more predictable because of the relatively narrow range between the minimum and maximum values. It's just a good middle of the road choice that will give more consistent damage. You won't get as many spectacular criticals as say a hammer or an axe hitting for max damage on a critical hit but you will generally come out ahead if the weapon hits on the lower end of the damage scale, particularly versus axes. I also think that you would benefit more from sword over hammer because of the addition of any mods on your shield. Sure the hammer does more damage but at the expense of additional shield mods and attack speed. I would be willing to bet that over an extended period the damage output for a sword is greater than a hammer just because of the attack speed difference.
