I've had this happen several times: the screen would completely freeze but I would still hear fighting and noises because the game was still running. I could close the program but thats it. Any idea on what is causing this?

Something similar to what you're saying happened to me a while ago - I could Alt-Tab out or hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Windows Security screen to reboot/kill GW through Task Manager. Screen would lock up, sounds would continue to play.

Check your video card to see if it's overheating. NvTempLogger is a nice free application to check and log the card's temperature if you use a NVIDIA card. I fixed my 6600GT by replacing the el cheapo heatsinko, cleaning off the thermal paste and applying a fresh coat of Arctic Silver 5.

Might work for you, might not.

The problem I think mainly has to do with direct x try downloading the most recent version of direct x and see if that solved the problem...it did for me.
