Thinking about purchasing...

I am currently playing WoW right now, and am getting fed up with Blizzard. They are raking in millions a month and can't keep servers up. This is one of the many things that pisses me off about the game, but I guess that doesnt matter.

I cant find a trial of GW, so I thought Id ask some questions.

What's the PvP like?
Is there end game content?
Is the game easy to understand?
Since it doesn't have a monthly fee, are there a bunch of annoying kids running around?
Are there instance-type zones?
Could you compare it to WoW?

Thanks in advance.

I can't answer all of the questions, but I can tell you that the majority of the game is instanced.

Towns, outposts, and missions are the only areas where there are a multitude of other players. You can form groups, trade, chat, etc. there. Then when you leave to enter a mission or go into the country side, you and your party only get your own instance of that area. So you will never have to wait for re-spawns, worry about being player-killed, wait for access, or be in contention with other players for loot ( Guild Wars assigns drops to be people in your party).

Towns and outposts also have their own "districts" which you can seamlessly warp to. This is done to reduce lag on the servers. There are also international districts where people from all different servers can meet.

You can "travel" quickly from towns/missions/outposts that you have already been too with the click of the mouse.

For what it is worth, Guild Wars is very different from any other game I have played. It has been a very unique, challenging, and enjoyable experience so far. The graphics are spectacular.

There is a ton of end game content. You reach the level cap about 1/2 way through the PvE campaign. The game was designed to reward players for skill rather than hours played or how good your characters gear is.

I hope this was helpful. And if you do decide to try it out, which I highly recommend, then welcome to Guild Wars!

P.S. People with the Factions pre-orders get a 14 day trial key for the original Prophecies campaign, maybe you could acquire such a key from some here?

1. Be more specific.

2. Yes, but not too much, as far as Chapter 1 is concerned. PvP is designed to be a sort of endgame, but that's pure personal preference.

3. I thought it was, having zero MMO or MMO-like background, but a friend coming from WoW said that GW's interface was awfully clunky, so I dunno.

4. Yes. You tend to learn to tune them out, however.

5. 90% of the game is instanced. Only towns, where you group with others, are not instances.

6. I wouldn't compare the two directly, no. WoW is a typical MMO. GW is definitely not.

1) Don't play PvP enough to answer
2) yes
3) should be easy for an experienced gamer
4) to some extent
5) yes
6) never played WoW

Is the PvP like set up in an arena (like battlegrounds in WoW), or is it world PvP? Are there PvP rewards like weapons and armor?

Yes. All PVP is done in various arenas. Random Arena (two teams of 4v4, assembled purely at random), Team Arena (same as above, but you pick your team), Heroes' Ascent (8-man team goes through various different arenas to win the favor of the gods, too long to really describe here), and Guild vs Guild (exactly as it sounds, two guilds fight it out).

There aren't exactly PVP rewards as such, no. Winning in Heroes' Ascent grants random members of the team rare items, but they're nothing that can't be found elsewhere.

The PvP is very good play-wise. Higher end PvP is harder to get into, and you'll probably want to find a guild that actively does it. If you are in a guild that only does PvE and you want to do PvP, expect alot of standing around and alot of hard work.

There are plenty of areas after you've beaten the PvE storyline that you can go to and do quests. Something big with people in this game is 'farming' these high end areas for gold. Some people might find doing that boring, and its hard to find a non-guild group that just does quests and such for fun in those places.

The PvE is easy to get used to. Many areas of the game are a learning process (Like how to properly pull monsters, getting Henchmen to behave in the way you want them, etc.)

PvP is also a learning process, and many people who play the higher-end will expect you to know everything that they know when you first get into their group. Builds take planning and thinking ability. Then there is strategy.

Overall, its pretty easy to get a hang of. Though, somehow, many people seem to have no idea what they are doing.

There are quite a few annoying people. I wouldn't say they are 'kids' as much as they are 'jerks,' many of the bad ones don't appear to be that young. You get those everywhere, I guess.

Before it used to be pretty bad, with people continually drawing genetals on the Mini-map, but I haven't seen that (suprisingly) in months. Those people now pretty much do nothing but hang out in Random Arena District 1 and Maharan's Grotto.

Most of the game is instanced. Maybe you should read a bit more about the game

Okay......here we go

Its fast and action packed, and most fights dont last more than thirty minutes (Unless its a very good fight)

There are quest to do afterwards, skills to unlock, and PvP.... And New armors That look very nice

Very easy, however you might want to do some PvE before you step into the PvP ring

Quite a few Doorknobs, however I play WoW also and they have just as much

Guild wars is all instanced, except for towns.

Guild Wars and WoW are the same like a Tank and a Honda...you drive them both (both MMO) but there very diffrent

EDIT: I got a free key somewere, send me a PM and I will give it to you

all those questions are answerd

the only thing I got to say:

I bought collectors edition it cost me 70 euros, I've played 1000 hours over 10 months on guildwars and still not bored.

Take your calculator and count the money you spend for WoW for 10 months

GuildWars : prophecies is atm 30-40 euros? dunno could be lower or a bit higher, but its nothing when you look at the fun you get from it.

I advice you to wait for factions and buy factions, later you can discide if you like it to buy prophecies

I think there's a pre-order package for Factions that gives a 14-day trial of Prophecies, but I'm not entirely sure.

I was under the impression that Blizzard actually implemented Battlegrounds -after- Guild Wars was released. I believe it was their answer to the instanced arena-style PvP that was touted in Guild Wars.

So, yes, there are several different stlyes of arena-style pvp. Theres Random 4vs4 (you dont pick your party), 4vs4,, 8vs8 tournament style, and 8vs8 guild (clan) battles in cp1.

ch2 (factions) offers 12vs12 semi-random (you only pick part of your group), and 8vs8 random.

Most PvP as reward offers "Faction with the gods" when you kill someone. You can spend this faction to unlock more skills, weapon upgrades, and runes (upgrades for armor).

The 8v8 tournament style (called Hero's Ascent) offers that, plus another reward called "Fame". You get Fame for each round of the tournament you beat, and fame adds up to "Rank" (Like you need 20 fame to get rank 1). With rank their are special emotes you can do to prove to other players that you have Pvp'ed for a long time and earned that rank.

I could be wrong but
WoW = multiplayer questing
GW = multiplayer questing + multiplayer fighting

WoW works with several servers right? And afaik they aren't connected in any way. WoW doesn't allow people from all over the globe to fight eachother right?
I spoke with some ex-hardcore WoW players and they told me that a GW-like world championship would be impossible in WoW. WoW, they say, is all about grinding, getting items, getting better items, killing the same boss over and over until you get your item and above all, waiting for your server to get back online.

In GW, you can fight anyone and I've never seen the server being down for no reason.

Correct me if I'm wrong O.o
