Is cursing bad? I've been called a noob so many times in the last hour I started playing. I snapped and said "Why the f**k do half of you all use the term noob so much?!". A bunch of people agreed with me and someone else said they reported me. Am I going to get in trouble for that?!

I usually don't. It's just that being called a noob/n00b/newb/noobie/no0b/nobb for the stupidest reasons gets old. I was selling black dye. The dye trader had it at 8k (I know its not normally like that). I was selling for 7k. Earlier I sold for 7.5k to a few people. I just find that the term noob/n00b/newb/noobie/no0b/nobb is used way to often nowadays and most people have lost sight of the real meaning.

subverting the language filter is a Bad Thing. Just because someone else is acting like a 12 year old, it doesn't give you excuse to break the rules.

I don't see a ban in your future though. Just don't turn into a potty mouth.

As long as you just swearing in general about your surroundings (ex. Why the Fork can't I see my forehead, or I wish these darn Hydras Pizz the Fork off!) and not swearing with the intention of demeaning your peers (ex. Ha, i beat you in Team arenas, now bow down and suck my **** you dumb-arsed forking mother-forker) then you should be safe from Anet's ban stick.

I dont see the problem...GW has an optional filter...whats the point in turning it off if language will offend you?

minor cursing isn't a big deal, if they don't want to hear it, they can easily put the language filter on. If they turn it off, then they are voluntarily allowing bad words to be said and read by them, so I don't think that matters.

I think it's healthy to curse someone if he really deserves it. I rarely hold back and have yet to get in trouble after about 1500 hours total. I just try to limit my profane-laced tirades to whispers.

were you aware that i myself and most others can bypass those filters at will?

and any filter that is truly effective is so restrictive that talk is useless?

I find I usually dont use profanity with people I don't know. It is different with friends who know you than with people you may or may not have that mutual respect for. Friends understand, enemies don't. Saying things in aggression to someone that does not know you invites further conflict. You are then asking for a fight. The only fist in GW is the ''report.''

However, as to the use of the word Newb, I am old enough to almost remember its being created. (I was born in the Mezazoic Era.) Those that apply it are in my oppion, most often attempting to cover their own inability to provide constructive critticism or aid. This means they too do not yet know the game. Or perhaps their attitude is just no worth dealing with.

"Noob" is exactly like its old counterpart 'lamer', in that it doesn't really mean anything, it's just a tired generalised insult used by people with more attitude than imagination.

Newb/newbie still means something, though: it means "beginner". It's not an insult really. Everyone is a newb at first, not everyone is ever a noob (not really).
